  • More than 1 billion mobile apps (smartphone applications) have been released worldwide. Competition among developers of apps that are available in app stores has intensified because of increasing demand. App icons with an appealing design can instantly increase attention. Miryoku Engineering methods were used and combined with the Kansei interface model to examine the relationship between attractive icons and users. The evaluation grid method (EGM) is a qualitative method that was used to evaluate the icons, and Quantification Theory Type I is a quantitative method that was used to analyze the influence of design elements in icons. Eight attractive factors of app icons were determined using EGM, and six specific factors were identified using questionnaires. The quantitative results indicated that user cognition and emotion were influenced by the various design elements. The impact on the attractive factors of a single design element differed among users with diverse backgrounds. App icons were assessed on the basis of aesthetics to identify attractive factors and thereby assist designers in understanding and implementing design elements and improving the overall visual appeal of their apps. The result of this investigation is crucial to the presentation of app icons in online app stores.

  • New product development requires information on customers' emotions such as vision, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, or tactile perceptions. In this study, tactile sense which has not been well studied compared to other senses, was measured and statistically analysed for different surface roughnesses of plastic samples. The emotional responses of 37 pairs of positive and negative adjectives describing tactile senses were collected and analysed through the questionnaire to find the correlation between adjectives and surface roughness. Frequency of the first preference for each adjective on four different roughness is obtained, and used for the statistical studies such as factor analysis, multidimensional scaling, or clustering.

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of design parameters of vibrotactile signals on semantic association with transmitted information conveying different meanings. Background: As information communication relying on human visual channel becomes excessive, the utility of vibrotactile signals is being interested as a substitute measure of delivering information. Properly designed hapticons may relieve burden of visual communication by rendering distinct and meaningfully compatible haptic sensations. Method: A typical Kansei engineering approach was adopted in this study. Ten most distinctive hapticons were selected among those having different frequencies and amplitudes. Associations between the hapticons and twenty four pairs of adjectives used to describe the state of automobile in control were gathered from thirty subjects using semantic differential scales. Results: The selected pairs of adjectives were summarized by factor analysis into two semantic dimensions named 'Awareness' and 'Directionality'. The experimental hapticons matched with the semantic dimensions were presented as a haptic emotion map. Conclusion: The results from this study support that frequencies and amplitudes of haptic signals play important roles in arousing different human perceptions regarding the two haptic emotional dimensions. Application: Properly designed hapticons with respect to the contents of transmitted information will increase human operator's situation awareness as well as system performance. The result from this study can be used to develop standardized hapticons for active haptic communication.

  • A viscosity resistance control method of the intelligent prosthetic legs is studied using an optimal control theory. The simulated results suggests that it is important to control the viscosity of the prosthetic knee joint in one period of walking to improve the usability. In this paper we describe modeling of the thigh prosthetic legs, optimal control and simulated results.

  • This paper introduces the basic concept of computational modeling of perception processes for multimedia data. Such processes are modeled as hierarchical inter- and intra- relationships amongst information in physical, physiological, psychological and cognitive layers in perception. Based on our framework, this paper gives the algorithms for content-based retrieval for multimedia database systems.

  • Recently, flowerbed median strips are being installed in urban highways for safety and scenery. In addition, efforts to enhance urban image through roadside flowerbeds and trees are being exerted for afforestation to enhance the urban environment. The sensibility of humans, such as the feeling of agreeableness of drivers must be considered when planning roads. However, not many researches on users on road environment are being conducted. Accordingly, KANSEI Engineering that is attracting attention nowadays was applied to form the image or sensibility of humans as definite object, in order to grasp the relation between the personal attributes of users and road formation with sensible factors considered when the road users evaluates the road scenery. As the result of research, streetscape was not evaluated based on individual factors such as roads, trees and buildings that form roads, but was based on sensibility image based on harmony of the overall road formation according to the changes of each factors.

  • A new human sensibility (kansei) meter that can measure human sensibility at the indoor environment is developed in this paper. Four sensors that can measure temperature, humidity, $CO_2$ and $C_4H_{10}$ concentrations are used. Among these sensors, the first three are used to determine the human sensibility. And the last to protect human from the harmful gas. First of all, human sensibilities are defined for each sensor datum, and then those are linearly combined to make a final human sensibility (kansei). The efficiency and usefulness of the meter are verified using a simulator on Windows 95 and a stand-alone system constructed using a microprocessor.

  • On the occasion of high price oil generation, we have to promote activation policy for public transportation and hold back to use passenger car, it is very important to improve of sidewalk environment for pedestrian. Evaluation for sidewalk environment will be fixed with sensibility to feel pedestrian. So, study for sensibility about comfort etc. to feel pedestrian will be carried out. In this paper, researchers interests in engineering methods to make material considering sensibility and image of human. Therefore, we carried out recognition experiment for sidewalk environment with Kansei engineering, and made a quantitativedata of sensibility adjective that it was surveyed by semantic deferential method. After grasp factors by principal analysis, we found factor effect to design criterion and sidewalk environment preference. So, we could identify a design factor for comfort environment.
