  • As contemporary society has become more complicated, specialized, and segmented, people are experiencing more diverse types of stress. In particular, while several factors associated with job stress have been examined among nurses, who belong to a professional group, the existing research has made no quantitative assessments of stress that reflect temporal differences in individuals. Therefore, the aim of this study is to understand the effects of job stress on alpha-amylase with regard to the working hours of nurses, to assess the variations in jobs stress over time, and provide basic data to improve the quality of nursing services. Ninety nurses working in three shifts in general, emergency, and intensive care wards of a university hospital in D City participated in this study. Salivary alpha-amylase (SAA) was extracted and analyzed at two-hour intervals from 07:00 to 15:00 from nurses on the day shift and from 23:00 to 07:00 from those working the night shift. The SAA level was highest between 23:00 and 01:00 for nurses in general wards ($mean{\pm}S.D.\;39.00{\pm}14.88$) and between 11:00 and 13:00 for those in both intensive care units and emergency wards ($mean{\pm}S.D.\;67.50{\pm}62.93$ and $mean{\pm}S.D.\;39.67{\pm}35.96$, respectively). The characteristic variation in SAA was significant between 23:00 and 01:00 (p < 0.01) and for those in their fifties or older (p < 0.01). The activation ratio of alpha-amylase, a stress reactant, showed an increase when the sympathetic nervous system was activated by mental stress; in addition, job stress was manifested with the effect of awakening at different time segments and at different ages among the nurses. With the aim of raising the level of service based on the nurses maintaining their mental health, it is necessary to focus sharply on the time segment for critical control and to conduct repetitive studies to determine the divisions of eustress critical values as well as to expand the population.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of private tutor's job stress on the organizational commitment and turn-over intention and to verify the mediating effect of the organizational commitment. The questionnaire survey was peformed for 332 private tutors in special education region in Seoul. The collected data were used as a model of path coefficients obtained through analysis of structure equation model(SEM) and hypothesis verification. The result of the verification is as follows. First, both stress by student and stress by administrative support showed statistically significant negative effects on the organizational commitment. Second, the private tutor's organizational commitment showed a statistically significant negative effects on the turn-over intention. Third, both stress by task and stress by conflict in organization showed statistically significant positive effects on the turn-over intention. Fourth, even if both stress by student and stress by administrative support showed statistically no significant effects on the turn-over intention, they showed statistically significant effects on the turn-over intention with the mediating effect of the organizational commitment. It was confirmed that the turn-over intention can be decreased by relief of the private tutor's job stress and enhancement of the organizational commitment. In this process, it is meaningful to verify the role and function of the private tutor's organizational commitment.

  • Objectives: The objective of the present study was to assess the factors that influence the health of workers, especially nurses, and to propose methods for health management. Methods: A total of 246 nurses were surveyed to ascertain the health status score, Sasang constitution diagnosis, health-related life and job factors, psychosocial stress, and job stress. Depending on their health status score, the subjects were categorized into unhealthy, intermediate, or healthy groups, and each factor was compared with the stress score of the groups. Further, each Sasang constitution factor was also compared with the stress scores. Results: Analysis based on the health status scores indicated that the patients in the intermediate group were older and had longer tenure than those in the unhealthy or healthy groups. The healthy group had higher number of married individuals, and they were subjectively assessed as healthy. Patients in this group were more satisfied with their work than those in the unhealthy group. Analysis of the Sasang constitution showed that a lower percentage of individuals with a Soeumin constitution were married, and most considered themselves to be unhealthy during the subjective health assessment. Conclusions: The findings of this survey revealed that in order to maintain health, efforts should be made to improve the work environment, achieve health confidence, and practice health behavior while considering one's own body, mental state, and constitution.

  • Background: Work Ability Index (WAI) is a well-known and valid self-report tool that has been widely used in various studies to identify and avoid early retirement and work-related disability. Nevertheless, very few studies have been carried out to evaluate work ability in Iran. We aimed to investigate the WAI and the effect of work-related stress on it among Iranian workers. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive and analytic study was carried out among 449 workers from five working sectors in three big cities of Iran. Work ability and work-related stress were measured using the Persian version of WAI and the Persian version of Health and Safety Executive Stress Indicator Tool. Results: More than a third of the workers surveyed (34.70%) did not have an appropriate level of work ability (WAI < 37). There was a significant correlation between subscales of work-related stress and the mean score of WAI. Furthermore, the variables of body mass index, sleep quality, exercise activity, job tenure, and three subscales of work-related stress including demands, supervisor support, and role were significant predictors of WAI. Conclusion: According to the results of this study, the interventional programs must be focused on improving supervisors support, eliminating ambiguity and conflicts in the role of workers in their job and organization, reducing job demands, improving sleep quality, and increasing exercise activity.

  • In this study, nurses above the age of 20 years and working in General Hospitals located in the Gyeongbuk province were enrolled as participant. A survey was conducted to identify the relationship between types of health-eating, level of occupational stress, and degree of quality of life. An effective sample size of 120 was determined, and it was validated as a feasible count to perform the analysis by applying the PLS-SEM. We hypothesized that the physiological and psychological occupational stress levels vary according to functional, mental, and trendy types of health-eating lives and impact the degree of quality of life. This was evaluated using structural models, employing the bootstrapping method using the Smart PLS 3.0. Our results indicate that in the relationship between health-eating types and quality of life, the higher the functional health-eating type, the higher the quality of life. The association between job stress and quality of life showed that the higher the psychological work stress, the more negative the quality of life. Examining the association between the type of healthy eating and the quality of life revealed that the higher the functional health-eating type, the higher the quality of life. As a result of verifying the moderating effect of the difference in working period (less than 3 years/more than 3 years), it was found that the shorter the working period (less than 3 years), the higher the psychological stress.

The group who experienced presenteeism during the last one year had significant differences in professionalism and perceived productivity. Predictors of sickness presenteeism in clinical nurses included work experience, total health problem and last 1 year absenteeism. Last 1 year absenteeism and total health problem were strongly related to presenteeism in clinical nurses. Conclusion: Major findings of this study indicated that in dealing with nurses' presenteeism, not only managing nurses' job stress and job satisfaction but also providing flexible work schedule and increasing staffing level as an organizational approach are necessary to be considered.
