The Effect of a Breathing Exercise Intervention on Pulmonary Function after Lung Lobectomy (폐절제술을 받은 환자의 호흡운동중재가 폐기능에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a breathing exercise intervention by measuring pulmonary function test (PFT) three times; preoperative, 3rd and 5th day after operation. Methods: This study was designed as a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. A total of 55 patients with lung cancer were recruited from a Chonnam university hospital in Hawsun-gun, Korea from January to December 2008. Results: 'Forced Vital Capacity (FVC)' and 'Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second $(FEV_1)$' were significantly improved in the experimental group than those in the control group (p<.05). Conclusion: Breathing exercise intervention was found to be effective in improving pulmonary function among lung cancer patients underwent lung lobectomy. Thus, the breathing exercise can be applied in hospitals and communities for patients with lung cancer as one of the nursing intervention modalities for their better postoperative rehabilitation.

Effects of Parents-centered Speech Intervention Program in Children with Cochlear Implant (부모중심 언어중재가 인공와우이식 아동의 수용언어능력에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was aimed to evaluate effect of parents-centered speech intervention program on overall speech and language performances of children with cochlear implant. Ten pairs of mother and child were selected and assigned into two groups: intervention group(G1) and control group(G2). G1 included 5 children with cochlear implant and their mothers who joined the parents-centered program. G2 consisted of 5 children with cochlear implant and their mothers did not participate in the program. To evaluate their speech and language abilities, examination instruments(Preschool Language Scale, and Language Comprehension and Cognition Test) were analyzed. Performances of pre- and post-treatment were analysed by ANOVA procedure. The results were as follows: There were significant differences of speech and language performances between pre- and post-treatment in G1. But there were no significant differences in G2(therapists centered program). G1 showed better performances in language comprehension than G2. This study revealed that parents centered language intervention program would be effective for speech and language development for children with cochlear implant.

Effects of the multimodal intervention program including animal-assisted therapy on depression and self-esteem among university students

  • This study aimed to investigate the effects of the multimodal group intervention that combined animal-assisted therapy (AAT) and integrated play therapy (IPT) on depression and self-esteem in undergraduate university students. The subjects were 40 students attending animal-related and social welfare departments of universities located in a metropolitan city. The multimodal intervention program was conducted for eight sessions (twice a week, 60 min each) in the experimental group. Data analysis was conducted using the independent sample t-test, ANCOVA, and paired sample t-test for pre- and post-test. Therefore, the multimodal intervention program applying AAT and IPT showed positive effects on depression and self-esteem in university students. Based on these results, this study proposed the operation of multidisciplinary education and practical and policy utilization methods to reduce depression among university students and help improve their self-esteem.

Review of Studies Using a Rhythm Task Intervention and the Rationale for its Formulation (국내 리듬 중재 연구의 중재 구성 및 논거에 대한 고찰)

  • With the recent emphasis on evidence-based research and practice, the field of music therapy has called for rigorous reviews of the scientific data and for therapeutic rationales for research procedures. The purpose of this study was to review studies that used a rhythm task as a therapy intervention in terms of whether they provided a rationale for the components related to the intervention. The components included activity rationale, music rationale, intervention validity, intervention format (individual or group), intervention development (contour), duration, and intervention provider. A total of 41 studies were selected: 22 studies were implemented by music therapists and 19 by professionals in other related fields. In terms of seven assessment categories, only 10 studies were found to report more than four items which are related to a rationale of interventions. The 10 studies identified were further examined to determine if their intervention rationale differed depending on whether the study included a researcher-formulated intervention or an existing music therapy protocol. Of the 10 studies, six used a researcher-formulated rhythm intervention, and four used an existing music therapy protocol. Those studies that used an existing music therapy protocol also provided a clear rationale for music selection, whereas those that used a researcher-formulated rhythm task tended to provide an activity rationale. The results of this study suggest that researchers need to be clearer about their interventions and provide an evidence-based rationale for why and how they use a rhythm task.

The Effect of Meridian Points Massage Nursing Intervention on the Recovery of Facial Paralysis (안면경락마사지 간호중재가 뇌졸중 환자의 안면마비 회복에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop on east-west nursing intervention program. This study was conducted to identify the effectiveness of using facial meridian points for massage nursing intervention on the recovery of facial paralysis for 46 patients (22 for experimental group). All had suffered from strokes, and were also admitted to the division of oriental medicine in K University Hospital. Method: Data was collected from February 1st to December 31st of 2000. This study used a quasi experimental, non-equivalent control group pre-test and post-test design. The recovery of facial paralysis was measured by the difference between left and right facial length, observation and self report on a seven point scale, and facial discomfort by a facial scale after 6-7 facial massages in a two week period. Data was analyzed using the SPSS package program with x2 and t test. Result: The result of this study are as follows; The experimental group who received the facial meridian massage showed higher scores in recovery of facial paralysis (t=2.72, p=.009), and a smaller difference between left and right facial strength than those in control group (t=2.26, p= .29). The discomfort of the facial area in the experimental and control group showed no significant differences. Conclusion: These findings indicate that a facial meridian points massage could be an effective nursing intervention to the recovery of facial paralysis. This study contributes in developing an east-west nursing intervention with the oriental meridian theory and western massage therapy.

The Effects of Mechanical Ventilation Simulation on the Clinical Judgment and Self-confidence of Nursing Students (중환자간호 기계환기 시뮬레이션교육이 간호학생의 임상판단력과 자신감에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of mechanical ventilation simulation on the clinical judgment and self-confidence of nursing students. Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental study. From one university, 118 undergraduate nursing students participated in this study. Sixty students were in the intervention group, and fifty-eight students were in the control group. A simulation scenario utilizing a high-fidelity human simulator focusing on nursing care for patients with a mechanical ventilator was developed for this study. Data were collected with a self-report survey method before the intervention, right after intervention, and two weeks later. Results: Students in the intervention group showed significantly higher increases in clinical judgment and self-confidence than those in the control group at the immediate posttest. Moreover, 2 weeks later, the increase in clinical judgment and self-confidence from the pretest among the intervention group was significantly larger than those in the control group. Conclusion: Utilizing simulation education focusing on patients with a mechanical ventilator may contribute to training more competent nurses in the area of critical care nursing. It may also serve to provide a better critical care environment for the safety and health of patients.

An Evaluative Study on the Quality of Papers on the Effects of the Smoking Prevention Programs in Korea

  • This investigation was performed to summarize a few prominent features of smoking prevention program studies and to evaluate the quality of smoking prevention program studies using the Quality of Study Rating Form (QSRF). 24 school-based smoking prevention programs were subjected to an evaluation of study quality using QSRF. Study quality was 57.29 points out of 100 points on average, so it cannot be said that study quality was good. Most of the studies described the subjects and the intervention contents and intervention time. 50% stated where the intervention occurred specifically, 50% of the studies either discussed a specific theory that justified the use of one or more intervention methods, or they cited literature said to support the chosen intervention method. Only one study assigned subjects randomly to experimental groups or control groups and 50.0% of the studies showed baseline equality. There was no study where subjects were blind to being in the treatment or control group or where subjects were selected randomly by random sampling procedure. 79.2% of the studies had non-treated control groups and 20.8% of the studies had comparison groups with other treatments in the form of either other delivery methods or other contents. Sample sizes were larger than 21 in the experimental group for all studies. 75% of the studies stated face validity of outcome measure or cited from previous literature. 58.3% of the studies tested reliability and 45.8% reported the reliability measure was a figure of .70 or greater. There was no study where those rating outcomes were rated blind, because researchers generally collected data by themselves. Outcome measures were taken only after the intervention was completed and tests of statistical significance were generally referred to statistical method and p value in all studies. All studies met the criteria that follow-up was greater than 75%. The implications for the future studies were discussed.

  • Objective : Sensory integration is the organization for sensation for use. The purpose of this study is to carry out the sensory integrative intervention for the mental retardation with child and to examine change of child's balance and breath abilities. Methods : The study performed from 25 May to 13 Autumn, 2009. The design is AB design(baseline 3sessions, intervention 21sessions) of single-subject research design. We carried out the sensory integrative intervention(3 sessions per week) for baseline period and the sensory integrative intervention(3 sessions per week) with sensory diet every day for intervention period. Results : The results of the sensory integrative intervention with sensory diet had positive effects for child's breathe and balance. Conclusion : The occupational therapists recognize the effects of the sensory integrative intervention with sensory diet and need to recommend for the family of child with disability.

The Effects of Hope Intervention on the Hope and Quality of Life of Cancer Patients Staying at Home and Cared in Public Health Center (희망중재가 보건소 관리 재가 암환자의 희망과 삶의 질에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was to identify the effects of hope intervention on the hope and quality of life of cancer patients staying at home. Method: The study adopted the randomized control group design. The subjects consisted of randomly selected forty cancer patients who were registered at S-Gu Public Health Center. Hope intervention which was composed of hope assessment, positive self identity formation, hope objective setting. therapeutic relationship and spiritual & transcendental process improving, and hope evaluation was provided from October 22, 2007 to November 30, 2007. Result: Hypothesis 1-1 "The experimental group that received hope intervention will have a higher score of hope than the control group", was supported(t=-3.108, p=.004). Hypothesis 1-2 "The experimental group that received hope intervention will have a higher level of hope index than the control group". was supported(t=-4.219. p=.000). Therefore, Hypothesis 1 "The experimental group that received hope intervention will have a higher level of hope than the control group" was supported. Hypothesis 2 "The experimental group that received hope intervention will have a higher level of quality of life than the control group", was not supported(t=-1.726, p=.092). Conclusion: Hope intervention is an effective nursing intervention to enhance hope for patients with cancer staying at home.

Effects of the General Coordinative Manipulation Joint Intervention Model in Correcting Distort Leg with Imbalance of the Lower Extremity Joint, Pelvic and Shoulder Girdles, and Lumbar Spine (다리관절, 다리-팔 이음뼈, 허리뼈의 불균형을 가진 휜다리에 대한 전신조정술 관절중재모형의 교정효과)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study is to analyze the corrective effect of the general coordinative manipulation (GCM) joint intervention model on distort leg with imbalance of the lower extremity joints, pelvic and shoulder girdles, and lumbar spine. Methods : The study used a comparative analysis of the size of the distort leg and the imbalance of the lower extremity joints, pelvic and shoulder girdles, and lumbar spine before and after the application of the GCM joint intervention model. A total of 31 subjects from movement center G and the department of physical therapy at university M were selected as research subjects, and they were divided into two groups. The GCM joint intervention model was applied to 18 subjects in the bow knee group and 13 subjects in the knock knee group. The two groups received daily intervention three times a week for four weeks. The corrective effect of the GCM joint intervention model for each type of distort leg was compared and analyzed. Results : The effects of the GCM joint intervention model in correcting bow knee and knock knee with knee deformation and imbalance of the lower extremity joints, pelvic and shoulder girdles, and lumbar spine were significant in most domains (p<.05). The correlation between the bow knee and knock knee groups showed significance in most domains (p<.05). Conclusion : The GCM joint intervention model showed significant corrective effect in the bow knee and knock knee groups in terms of knee deformation, lower extremity joints, pelvic and shoulder girdles, and lumbar spine (p<.05).
