This study deals with the unsignalized intersection delay in the urban transportation demand forecasting. The objectives are to develop the unsignalized intersection delay models and to comparatively analyze the applicability of the above models. In pursuing the above, this study gives particular attentions to simulating by KHCS program and implementing the case study of Cheongju using EMME/2. The major findings are the followings. First, the 8 unsignalized intersection delay models were developed through 480 simulating results, which are all statistically significant. Second, the estimates by the unsignalized delay models were analyzed to be most fitted to the observed traffic volume data.

The time delay is used as a major indicator of the level of traffic congestion on traffic crossroads. For this purpose, the Daechi Station intersection where traffic congestion occurs and the Yeongdong 5 Bridge intersection where the traffic condition is relatively good, and the average lag time based on the field survey with the lag time calculated various simulation programs. comparison of the average control delay of the field survey data the signal intersection analysis model the KHCS Dechi intersection 7.7 second / vehicle Young dong 5 bridge intersection 7.9 second / vehiclehe VISSIM showed a difference Dechi intersection 21.1 second / vehicle and Young dong 5 bridge intersection 8.1 second / vehiclehe T7F showed a difference Dechi intersection 3.3 second / vehicle and Young dong 5 bridge intersection 9.3 second / vehicle. Analyzing the same intersection proved that the results differed from one simulation model to another.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to propose delay-minimizing operation methodology of a signalized intersection based upon optimization of lane-uses on approaching lanes for an intersection. METHODS : For the optimization model of lane-uses, a set of constraints are set up to ensure feasibility and safety of the lane-uses, traffic flow, and signal settings. Minimization of demand to saturation flow ratio of a dual-ring signal control system is introduced to the objective function for delay minimization and effective signal operation. Using the optimized lane-uses, signal timings are optimized by delay-based model of TRANSYT-7F. RESULTS : It was found that the proposed objective function is great relation with delay time for an intersection. From the experimental results, the method was approved to be effective in reducing delay time. Especially, cases for two left-turn lanes reduced greater delays than those for a left turn lane. It is noticed that the cases for different traffic volume by approach reduced greater delays than those for the same traffic volume by approach. CONCLUSIONS : It was concluded that the objective function is proper for lane-uses optimizing model and the operation method is effective in reducing delay time for signalized intersections.

This study is aimed to analyze the overall effects of the additional delay caused by the vehicle in front of the queue, at the signal, to the total delay estimation. To estimate the average vehicle delay at the signalized intersection, as survey of the queue length at the intersection and traffic counts were conducted. As a result of this analysis, all of the three delay estimation methods turned out to be similar in that the estimation of the average delay for the test vehicle was less than 60 sec/vehicle. However, the average delay time for the vehicle in front of the queue only, was estimated at 60-70 sec/vehicle which is similar to the average delay of the test vehicle.

The purpose of this study is to develop a traffic assignment model where the variable of signal intersection delay is taken into account in assigning traffic in large-scale network settings. Indeed, despite the fact that the majority of the increase in travel time or cost involving congested urban network or interrupted flow are accounted for by stop delays or congested delays at signal intersections, the existing traffic assignment models did not reflect this. The traffic assignment model considering intersection delays presented in this study was built based on the existing traffic assignment models, which were added to by the analysis technique for the computation of intersection delay provided in Korea Highway Capacity Manual. We can conclude that a multiple variety of simulation tests prove that this model can be applied to real network settings. Accordingly, this model shows the possibility of utilizing a model considering intersection delay for traffic policy decisions through analysis of effects of changes in traffic facilities on large urban areas.
Delay is an widely-used tool for evaluating the operation of signalized intersections. This paper presents two mathematical models: a model converting stop delay into approach delay : and a model estimating delay at isolated signalized intersection. To develop the delay-conversion model, actual stop delay and approach delay experienced by individual vehicles were measured and then their relationship was formulated using ma-thematical procedure. the formula expressing the approach-delay to stop-delay ratio was a monotonously decreasing function of effective red time. New delay model was developed based on the following criteria; the fitness to measured delay for undersaturated traffic condition and the convergence to the deterministic overflow delay for oversaturated traffic condition. Performance of this model was better than those of other existing models based on the comparison study.
The goals of this study are to develop travel time functions based on intersection delay and to analyze the applicability of the functions to traffic assignment models. The study begins with the premise that the existing assignment models can not effectively account for intersection delay time. In pursuing the goals, this study gives particular attention to dividing the link travel time into link moving time and stopped time at node, making the models based on such variables as the travel speed, volume, geometry, and signal data of signalized intersections in Cheongju, and analyzing the applicability of these models to traffic assignment. There are several major findings. First, the study presents the revised percentage of lanes (considering type of intersection) instead of g/C for calculating intersection delay, which is analyzed to be significant in the paired t-test. Second, the assigned results of applying these models to the Cheongju network in EMME/2 are compared with the data observed from a test car survey in Cheongju. The analyses show that the BPR models do not consider the intersection delay, but the modified uniform delay model and modified Webster model are comparatively well fitted to the observed data. Finally, the assigned results of applying these models are statistically compared with the test car survey data in assigned volume, travel time, and average speed. The results show that the estimates from the divided travel time model are better fitted to observed data than those from the BPR model.

Vehicle platoons starting a stopline are dispersed while travelling along the street and the delay at the next intersection depends on the arrival pattern of dispersed traffic flow. In this paper, the platoon dispersion charactiristics of our country, especially the time gap between passenger cars and buses caused by the dwell time at bus stops, were investigated through travel time surveys. Based on the survey results, on improved analysis method of intersection delay is proposed.
This study deals with the operational efficiency of roundabout. The roundabouts generally have such the merits as high capacity, delay reduction, safety improvement, and others. Circular intersection can be divided into the rotary and roundabout according to travelling priority. The objective of this study is to comparatively analyze the operational efficiency of rotary and roundabout by scenario. In pursuing the above, this study gives the particular attentions to developing 256 scenarios according to the directional and entering traffic volume and analyzing the delay using VISSIM. The main results are as follows. First, the average delay of rotary was analyzed to be 1.56-8.74 times of roundabout. Second, the operational efficiencies of rotary and roundabout were analyzed to be better in the case of bigger differences in the traffic volumes between the main and minor roads. Third, the average delay of the 4-legged was evaluated to be 1.77-11.70 times of 3-legged intersection. Finally, 2-lane intersection (3-legged & 4-legged) was analyzed to be 2.02-2.23 times of 1-lane intersection.

Recently, in order to solve the traffic congestion in urban areas and to improve the peripheral environment, research on the design and construction technology development of great depth underground double-deck tunnel is under way by using the underground space in the urban area. The network type double-deck tunnel is in the form of an intersection with a small cross section and a steep slope as per construction at the base of a flatland, so that the fire smoke spreads rapidly in case of fire, which is expected to cause damage of human life. Therefore, this study is analyzed the delay effect of fire smoke diffusion according to the installation and non - installation of delay system for fire smoke diffusion at the intersection. Fire fumes were delayed up to 270 seconds when the delay system for fire smoke diffusion was installed at the intersection and it is analyzed that the greater the operating area of the delay system for fire smoke diffusion, the more preventable the damage of human life of the intersection.
