  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the most rational method of grouping peers to understand the impact of peer relationship on individual development of elementary school students. For the study, students at a class of the 3rd year(male) and a class of the 4th(female) year at elementary schools in Busan and Ulsan were surveyed to see the differences between various methods of classification of peer relation subgroup on the basis of cooccurence of perception data and psychological preference data. Two questionnaires were used; a questionnaire of perception and a questionnaire of psychological preference. With the perception data, value of sharing relationship was applied to classify peer relation subgroup and with the psychological preference data, interest relationship was expanded to classify peer relation subgroup of more than third party relationship. The result of this study showed that in the case of girls, there was high congruency between the classifications of peer relation subgroup by perception data and by preference data, whereas in the case of boys, there was difference between the classifications of peer relation subgroup by perception data and by preference data, which implies that boys can form a peer group even if there is psychological difference among members but girls can form a peer group only when there is psychological preference among them. Such a result shows that there is difference between boys and girls in the process of forming peer relationship. It is suggested that comparison of fitness be made between classification of peer relation subgroup by a homeroom teacher, by perception data and by psychological preference for rational classification of peer relationship among male children.

  • Microalgae are photosynthetic microorganisms that are highly productive in the presence of basic renewable natural sources (light, $CO_2$, water and nutrients). They can synthesize lipids, carbohydrates and proteins in a small number of days. Subsequently, these carbon-captured products can be processed into both biofuels and valuable co-products. Additionally, microalgae would be an ideal feedstock for replacing land-based food crops with cellular products as high energy density transportation fuels. These microscopic organisms could contribute a significant amount of renewable energy on a global scale. In Korea, microalgae biofuel research was common in the early 1990s. The research activities were unfortunately stopped due to limited governmental funds and low petroleum prices. Interest in algal biofuels in Korea has been growing recently due to an increased concern over oil prices, energy security, greenhouse gas emissions, and the potential for other biofuel feedstock to compete for limited agricultural resources. The high productivity of microalgae suggests that much of the Korean transportation fuel requirements can be met by biofuels at a production cost competitive with the increasing cost of petroleum seen in early 2008. At this time, the development of microlalgal biomass production technology remains in its infancy. This study reviewed microalgae culture systems and biomass production, harvesting, oil extraction, conversion, and technoeconomical bottlenecks. Many technical and economic barriers to using microalgal biofuels need to be overcome before mass production of microalgal-derived fuel substitutes is possible. However, serious efforts to overcome these barriers could become a large-scale commercial reality. Overall, this study provides a brief overview of the past few decades of global microalgal research.

  • The interest to develop adhesives from renewable resources is growing to substitute petroleum-based adhesive resins in the manufacture of wood based panels. In our study, rapeseed flour (RSF), which is the by-product of bio-diesel produced from rapeseed, were hydrolyzed with acid and alkali. As a crosslinking agents of the RSF hydrolyzates, phenol-formaldehyde prepolymers (PF) were prepared. The RSF hydrolyzates and PF were mixed to complete the formulation of RSF-based adhesive resins, and the resins were applied to make the medium density fiberboard (MDF). The physical and mechanical properties of the MDF were measured to examine whether RSF can be used as raw materials of adhesive resins for the manufacture of MDF or not. The average moisture content and density of the MDF made with RSF-based adhesive resins satisfied the minimum requirement of KS standard, but the thickness swelling was not. The bending strengths of the MDF made with RSF-based adhesive resins were lower than that of the MDF made with commercial UF resins, but the internal bonding strengths of tested MDF in some make-up conditions of RSF-based adhesive resins were higher than that of MDF made with commercial UF resins. These results showed the potential of RSF as a raw material of adhesives for the production of MDF. Future works on the optimal manufacturing process conditions of MDF made with RSF-based adhesive resins are required to improve the performance of MDF made with RSF-based resins.

  • Interest in environmental pollution is increasing all over the world, and technology development to solve it is actively carried out. In areas where heat is used, especially, combustion is causing countless pollutants in the air environment. Combustion catalyst is a technology that reduces NOx and CO by lowering combustion temperature and enabling complete combustion. Traditional combustion catalysts are expensive and complex in the synthesis process using precious metal catalyst. In this study, hexaaluminate, a high-temperature combustion catalyst, was manufactured using urea, and the properties were investigated according to the synthesis time. The combustion performance and characteristics were evaluated using this catalyst. As the temperature increased, the changing methane conversion rate was shown in two patterns. The conversion rates for 1 hour, 9 hours, and 12 hours were similar, while the conversion rates for 3 hours and 6 hours showed similar patterns. Methane combustion performance increased rapidly as the synthesis time increased from 6 hours to 9 hours, whereas the temperature at T50 was approximately 745 ℃. The performance of the synthesized combustion catalyst for 9 hours was optimum as the NOx emission of this combustion catalyst was not present and the maximum emission of CO was 72 ppm.
