  • Fluid loading of a vibrating cylindrical shell can change natural frequencies and vibration magnitudes of the shell and a vibrating cylindrical shell can also change acoustic pressure of fluid. The vibroacoustics of fluid-filled cylindrical shells need the coupled solution of Helmholtz equation and governing equation of a cylindrical shell with boundary conditions. This paper proposed the wall impedance of fluid-filled axisymmetric cylindrical shells, focusing on the inner fluid/shell interaction. To propose the impedance, shell displacements used the linear combination of in vacuo shell modes. Acoustic pressure prediction of fluid used Kirchchoff-Helmholtz Integral equation with Green function of the plane mode. For the demonstration of the proposed results, numerical applications on mufflers were conducted.

  • This paper presents a simple model for studying the dynamic response of multi-span bridges resting on piers with different heights and subjected to earthquake forces acting transversely to the bridge, but varying spatially along its length. The analysis is carried out using the modal superposition technique, while the solution of the resulting integral-differential equations is obtained via the Laplace transformation. It has been found that the piers' height and the quality of the foundation soil can affect significantly the dynamic behavior of such bridges. Typical examples showing the effectiveness of the method are presented with useful results listed.

  • A nonlocal finite element model is developed for solving elasto-static frictional contact problems of nanostructures and nanoscale devices. A two dimensional Eringen-type nonlocal elasticity model is adopted. The material is characterized by a stress-strain constitutive relation of a convolution integral form whose kernel is capable to take into account both the diffusion process of nonlocal elasticity and the scale ratio effects. The incremental convex programming procedure is exploited as a solver. Two examples of different nature are presented, the first one presents the behavior of a nanoscale contacting system and the second example discusses the nano-indentation problem.

  • Ground vibrations are an integral part of the process of rock blasting. The sudden acceleration of the rock by the detonation gas pressure acting on the drillhole walls induces dynamic stresses in the surrounding rock mass. This sets up a wave motion in the ground much like the motion in a bowl of jelly when disturbed by the action of a spoon. The wave motion spreads concentrically from the blasting site, particularly along the ground surface, and is therefore attenuated, since its fixed energy is spread over a greater and greater mass of material as it moves away from its origin. Some theoretical aspects of the generation and propagation of vibrations produced in rock blasting are analyzed; although it must be indicated that this is just a mere approximation to the problem, as the actual phenomena are much more complex owing to the interaction of different types of waves and their modifying mechanics.

  • For the cracked component under combined primary and secondary stress, an interacion between the loads occurs and the secondary stress is relaxed by the primary load. To account for this phenomena, R6 code provides the correction factor which is called V-factor. However, evaluation corrected with V-factor need to be examined for its conservatism. In this paper the conservatism of the current V-factor is examined for the circumferentially cracked pipe under the combined load and new evaluation method is proposed to reduce the conservatism.

  • We consider Gibbs measures on $(R \times W_{0,0})^{Z^\nu}, W_{0,0} = {\omega \in C[0,1] : \omega(0) = \omega(1)}$, which are associated to an interaction between particles in lattice boson systems (quantum unbounded spin systems). In [4], the Gibbs measures were introduced in the study of equilibrium states of interacting lattice boson systems and were characterized by means of the equilibrium conditions. In this paper we utilize the techniques of the stochastic calculus of variations and the infinite dimensional Ito integral to derive stochastic equations which we call the equilibrium equations. We show that under appropriate conditions the equilibrium conditions and the equilibrium equations are equivalent. The lattice boson systems with superstable and regular interactions, which we studied in [4], are typical examples.

  • One of the principal sources of vibration and noise in permanent magnetic machines is cogging torque, which is induced by interaction between the rotor poles and the stator teeth. For its analysis, using finite element analysis is very time consuming and the calculation of performance factors is extremely sensitive to the discretization. Especially, Maxwell stress tensor method is sensitive to the location of integral path. In this paper, a cogging permeance fuction is defined and replaced by the straight line. And it is assumed that the flux density acting on the stator's tooth side is the euqal to the flux density of the slot area. Using this definition and assumption, analytical calculation of cogging torque is presented and validated. And several reduction method is introduced.

  • This paper describes a controller design for the stator reactive power generator in the transmission system. The controller of static reactive power generator was designed using a mathematical model and non-linear state feedback. The performance of controller was verified using computer simulation with EMTP code and experimental work with scaled-model. The dynamic interaction with a simple power system was also analyzed using both the simulation model and hardware scaled-model. Both simulation and experimental results prove that the controller using PI block and non-linear state feedback offers better performance than the controller using PI block only.

  • This paper presents a new algorithm for hierarchical optimal control of nonlinear systems. The proposed method is simple because the solutions are obtained by only exchanging informations of coefficient vector based on interaction prediction principle and FWT(fast Walsh transform) in upper and lower level. Since we solve two point boundary problem with Picard's iterative method and the backward integral operational matrix of Walsh function to obtain the optimal vector of each independent subsystem, the algorithm is simple and its operation is fast without inverse matrix and kronecker product operation. In simulation, the proposed algorithm's usefulness is proved by comparison with the global optimal control methods.

  • A characterization of turbulent reacting flows has proved difficult owing to the complex interaction between turbulence, mixing, and combustion chemistry. There are many types of time scales in turbulent flame which can determine flame structure. This counter jet type premixed burner produces high intensity turbulence. The goal is to gain better insights into the flame structures at high turbulence. 6 propane/air flames gave been studied with high velocity fluctuation in bundle type nozzle and in one hole type nozzle. By measuring velocity fluctuation, turbulent intensity and integral length scale are obtained. And sets of OH LIF images were processed to see flame structure of the mean flame curvatures and flame lengths for comparison with turbulence intensity and turbulent length scales. The results show that the decrease in nozzle size generates smaller flow eddy and mean curvatures of the flame fronts, and a decrease in Damkohler number estimated from flow time scale measurement.
