Sliding mode control, as a typical method of variable structure control, has the robust characteristics for the uncertainty and the disturbance of the nonlinear system. Because, however, sliding mode control input includes a sign function that Is discontinuous on the predefined switching surface, its applications are primarily limited by the need of alleviation or reduction of chattering. In this paper, we propose a chattering alleviation strategy based on a special nonlinear function and a fuzzy system. By using the proposed control scheme, we can reduce the steady state error. Its tracking performance is as fast as that of conventional method using the fixed boundary layer. Especially, in the proposed method, we can adjust the trade-off between the steady state error and the degree of chattering by regulating the proper range of the output variable of the fuzzy system. To verify the validity of the proposed algorithm, the analysis of the control method using the fixed boundary layer and the computer simulations are shown to compare with them.

In this paper, we suggest a variable structure controller using the time-varying nonlinear sliding surface instead of the fixed sliding surface, which has been the robustness against parameter variations and extraneous disturbance during the reaching phase. As appling TS fuzzy algorithm to the regulation of the nonlinear sliding surface, the reaching time of the system trajectory is faster than the fixed method . This proposed scheme has better performance than the conventional method in reaching time parameter variation and extraneous disturbance. To demonstrate its performance, the proposed control algorithm is applied to a rotational inverted pendulum.
The Stewart platform manipulator is a closed-kinematis chain robot manipulator that is capable of providing high st겨ctural rigidity and positional accuracy. However, this is a complex structure, so controllability of the system is not so good. In this paper, it introduces a new robust motion control algorithm using partial state feedback for a class of nonlinear systems in the presence of modelling uncertainties and external disturbances. The major contribution of this work introduces the development and design of robust observer for the slate and the perturbation w.hich is integrated into a variable structure controller(VSC) structure. The combination of controller/observer gives rise to the robust routine called sliding mode control with sliding perturbation observer(SMCSPO). The optimal gains of SMCSPO are easily obtained by genetic algorithm. Simulation and experiment are presented in order to apply to the stewart platform manipulator. There results show highly' accuracy and performance.

This paper presents the system modeling, analysis, and controller design and implementation for a rotational inverted pendulum system(RIPS), which is an under-actuated system and has the problem of unattainable angular velocity state. A sliding mode controller using the parameterization of both the hyperplane and the compensator fur output feedback is applied to the RIPS. Also, to improve the performance of the control system, a disturbance observer which estimates the disturbance, parameter variation, and some modeling errors of RIPS with less computational effort is used together. The results of simulation and experiment show that the proposed control system has superior performance for disturbance rejection and regulation at certain initial conditions.

The proposed scheme is based on the modified perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm combined with the sliding mode technique. A modified P&O algorithm based sliding mode controller is developed to study the effects of partial shade, temperature, and insolation on the performance of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) used in photovoltaic (PV) systems. Under partially shaded conditions and temperature, the energy conversion efficiency of a PV array is very low, leading to significant power losses. Consequently, increasing efficiency by means of MPPT is particularly important. Conventional techniques are easy to implement but produce oscillations at MPP. The proposed method is applied to a model to simulate the performance of the PV system for solar energy usage, which is compared to the conventional methods under non-uniform insolation improving the PV system utilization efficiency and allowing optimization of the system performance. The modified perturb and observe sliding mode controller successfully overcomes the issues presented by non-uniform conditions and tracks the global MPP. Compared to MPPT techniques, the proposed technique is more efficient; it produces less oscillation at MPP in the steady state, and provides more precise tracking.

In this paper, the adaptive fuzzy sliding mode controller with two systems is designed. The existing sliding mode controller used to $approximation{\^{u}}(t)$ with discrete sgn function and sat function for keeping the state trajectories on the sliding surface[1]. The proposed controller decrease the disturbance for uncertain control gain and This paper is concerned with an Adaptive Fuzzy Sliding Mode Control(AFSMC) that the fuzzy systems ate used to approximate the unknown functions of nonlinear system. In the adaptive fuzzy system, we adopt the adaptive law to approximate the dynamics of the nonlinear plant and to adjust the parameters of AFSMC. The stability of the suggested control system is proved via Lyapunov stability theorem, and convergence and robustness properties ate demonstrated. Futhermore, fuzzy tuning improve tracking abilities by changing some sliding conditions. In the traditional sliding mode control, ${\eta}$ is a positive constant. The increase of ${\eta}$ has led to a significant decrease in the rise time. However, this has resulted in higher overshoot. Therefore the proposed ${\eta}$ tuning AFSMC improve the performances, so that the controller can track the trajectories faster and more exactly than ordinary controller. The simulation results demonstrate that the performance is improved and the system also exhibits stability.
This paper shows a self tuning fuzzy inference method by the genetic algorithm in the fuzzy-sliding mode control for a Polishing robot. Using this method, the number of inference rules and the shape of membership functions are determined by the genetic algorithm. The fuzzy outputs of the consequent part are derived by the gradient descent method. Also, it is guaranteed that .the selected solution become the global optimal solution by optimizing the Akaike's information criterion expressing the quality of the inference rules. It is shown by simulations that the method of fuzzy inference by the genetic algorithm provides better learning capability than the trial and error method.

In underwater environment, the control of AUV is difficult, because of the existence of parameter uncertainties and disturbances as well as highly nonlinear and coupled system dynamics. The requirement for the simple and robust controller which works satisfactorily in those dynamical uncertainties, call for a design using the PD or sliding mode controller. The PD controller is very popular controller in the industrial field and the sliding mode controller has been used successfully for the AUV controller design. In this paper, the two controllers arc designed for ISiMI(Integrated Submergible Intelligent Mission Implementation) AUV and the performances are compared by numerical simulation under the modeling uncertainty and disturbances. The design process of PD and sliding mode controller for ISiMI AUV and simulation results are included to compare the performances of the two controllers.
In this paper, as an anti-sway control strategy of container cranes, we investigate a variable structure control in which the moving load follows a given trajectory, whereas both the trolley and hoist controllers achieve their positioning problems. It is crucial, in an automated container terminal, that collisions should be avoided during the transference of containers from one place to another. It is also necessary, in the case of a quay crane, to select suitable loading and unloading trajectories of containers, so that possible collisions with surrounding obstacles are avoided. After a brief introduction of the mathematical model, a robust control scheme (i.e., a second-order sliding mode control that guarantees a fast and precise transference and a suppression of the resulted swing) is presented. Despite model uncertainties and unmodeled actuators dynamics, the swing suppression from the given trajectory is obtained by constraining the system motion on suitable sliding surfaces, which include both the desired path and the swing angle. The proposed controller has been tested with a laboratory-size pilot crane. Experimental results are provided.

The research on two-wheeled inverted pendulum (TWIP) mobile robots has been ongoing in a number of robotic laboratories around the world. In this paper, we consider a robust controller design for the TWIP mobile robot driving on uniform slopes. We use a 2 degree-of-freedom (DOF) model which is obtained by restricting the spinning motion in a 3 DOF motion dynamic equation. In order to design the robust controller guaranteeing stability of the TWIP mobile robot driving on inclined surface, we propose a sliding mode control based on the theory of variable structure systems and design a sliding surface using the theory of the linear quadratic regulation (LQR). For simulation, the dynamic model of the TWIP mobile robot is constructed using Mathworks' Simulink and the sliding mode control is also implemented using Simulink. From simulation results, we show that the proposed controller effectively controls the TWIP mobile robot driving on slopes.
