  • Discrete topology optimization processes of structures start from an initial design domain which is described by the topology of constant material densities. During optimization procedures, the structural topology changes in order to satisfy optimization problems in the fixed design domain, and finally, the optimization produces material density distributions with optimal topology. An introduction of initial holes in a design domain presented by Eschenauer et at. has been utilized in order to improve the optimization convergence of boundary-based shape optimization methods by generating finite changes of design variables. This means that an optimal topology depends on an initial topology with respect to topology optimization problems. In this study, it is investigated that various optimal topologies can be yielded under constraints of usable material, when partial solid phases are deposited in an initial design domain and thus initial topology is finitely changed. As a numerical application, structural topology optimization of a simple MBB-Beam is carried out, applying partial circular solid phases with varying sizes to an initial design domain.

  • Tight integration between design and analysis processes and the data representation in the ship design application domain have been studied in this paper. Multi-Representation Architecture for design and analysis integration, proposed at Georgia Institute of Technology, has been carefully investigated for the application in the initial ship design stage. The MRA approach facilitates efficient generation of analysis models from the initial ship design data, thus reducing design lead time. Easy generation of analysis model is important because it allows quick analysis iteration under frequent design changes. The SMM, ABB and PBAM are defined for the analysis model of the typical ship structure. Only a part of the typical initial ship design data has been considered in the experimental implementation of the proposed approach. However, the prototype implementation shows that the application of MRA approach in the structural ship design domain is quite feasible. It is also contemplated that the same approach can be extended for other design and analysis views in the ship design domain.

  • This study shows an implementation of partial holes in an initial design domain in order to improve convergences of topology optimization algorithms. The method is associated with a bubble method as introduced by Eschenauer et al. to overcome slow convergence of boundary-based shape optimization methods. However, contrary to the bubble method, initial holes are only implemented for initializations of optimization algorithm in this approach, and there is no need to consider a characteristic function which defines hole's deposition during every optimization procedure. In addition, solid and void regions within the initial design domain are not fixed but merged or split during optimization Procedures. Since this phenomenon activates finite changes of design parameters without numerically calculating movements and positions of holes, convergences of topology optimization algorithm can be improved. In the present study, material topology optimization designs of Michell-type beam utilizing the initial design domain with initial holes of varied sizes and shapes is carried out by using SIMP like a density distribution method. Numerical examples demonstrate the efficiency and simplicity of the present method.

  • The Genetic Algorithm (GA), an optimization technique based on the theory of natural selection, has proven to be a relatively robust means of searching for global optimum. It converges to the global optimum point without auxiliary information such as differentiation of function. In the case of a complex problem, the GA involves a large population number and requires a lot of computing time. To improve the process, this research used parallel processing with several personal computers. Parallel process technique is classified into two methods according to subpopulation's size and number. One is the fine-grained method (FGM), and the other is the coarse-grained method (CGM). This study selected the CGM as a parallel process technique because the load is equally divided among several computers. The given design domain should be reduced according to the degree of feasibility, because mechanical system problems have constraints. The reduced domain is used as an initial design domain. It is consistent with the feasible domain and the infeasible domain around feasible domain boundary. This parallel process used the Message Passing Interface library.

  • In this research, hybrid method with case-based reasoning and rule-based reasoning is applied. Using case-based reasoning, design experts'experience and know-how are effectively represented in order to obtain a proper configuration of midship section in the initial ship design stage. Since there is not sufficient domain knowledge available to us, traditional case-adaptation algorithms cannot be applied to our problem, i.e., creating the configuration of midship section. Thus, new case-adaptation algorithms not requiring any domain knowledge are developed antral applied to our problem. Using the knowledge representation of DnV rules, rule-based reasoning can perform deductive inference in order to obtain the scantling of midship section efficiently. The results from the case-based reasoning and the rule-based reasoning are examined by comparing the results with various conventional methods. And the reasonability of our results is verified by comparing the results wish actual values from parent ship.

  • This study aims to investigate the behavioral characteristics of the LWSCR (lazy-wave steel catenary riser) for a turret-moored FPSO (Floating Production Storage Offloading) by using fully-coupled hull-mooring-riser dynamic simulation program in time domain. In particular, the effects of initial geometric profile on the global performance and structural behavior are investigated in depth to have an insight for optimal design. In this regard, a systematic parametric study with varying the initial curvature of sag and arch bend and initial position of touch down point (TDP) is conducted for 100-yr wind-wave-current (WWC) hurricane condition. The FPSO motions, riser dynamics, constituent structural stress results, accumulated fatigue damage of the LWSCR are presented and analyzed to draw a general trend of the relationship between the LWSCR geometric parameters and the resulting dynamic/structural performance. According to this study, the initial curvature of the sag and arch bend plays an important role in absorbing transferred platform motions, while the position of TDP mainly affects the change of static-stress level.

  • This paper presents a multi-domain topology optimization using the harmonically excited coil and the iron in order to focus pulsed magnetic field (PMF). The design sensitivity of the harmonic magnetic field is derived by adjoint variable method. As a result of the optimization, PMF is considerably concentrated on the objective domain with much less leakage than the initial model.

  • This study presents the topology optimization technique by density method to determine the initial shape of space truss structures. Most initial shape design is performed by designer's previous experiences and trial and error method instead of the application of reasonable optimization method. Thus, the reasonable and economical optimization methods are needed to be introduced for the initial shape design. Therefore, we set design domain for cantilever space truss structure as an example model. And topology optimization is used to obtain optimum layout for them, and then size optimization method is used to find the optimum member size. Therefore, the reasonable initial optimal shapes of spatial truss structures can be obtained through the topology and size optimization using density method.

  • A new method has been developed in this paper for automatic quadrilateral mesh generation for a two-dimensional domain. The method is named 'centering method' because it centers a point at the domain and then divides it into sub-domains using cutting lines from the center point. Each of the cutting lines is selected based on the criterion using the angles between the boundary of the domain and the cutting line. The decomposition of the domain into sub-domains is repeated until every subdomain has four or six nodes. Pre-defined splitters are used to divide six-node domains into quadrilateral elements depending on their configuration and presence on the boundary of the initial domain. Arbitrary domains are meshed as examples to verify the robustness of the new method.
