In this study, a learning environment based on STEAM theory was proposed to support and improve learners' activities and achievements for convergent design education. The learning environment design influence STEAM education with intentional design and schedule coordination, schools can create informal environments that are crucial to STEAM education. The physical surroundings of the learning space should be applied to teaching methods and learning activity, especially for STEAM-based education, physical space conditions should support the learner's design thinking and process. Furthermore, STEAM-based education environment should support a vast array of experiences that allow students to learn the context around ideas and skills. For spaces for learning environment based on STEAM, common design principles should be considered such as technology integration, safety and security, transparency, multipurpose space, and outdoor learning. Therefore, the learning environment based on STEAM needs flexible and mobile, connected, integrated, organized, flipped, and team-focused surroundings to support the learners understand, participate, cooperate, and accomplish the design process.
Euler's formula provides the topological characteristics of geometrical objects including polyhedra, and so an important mathematical concept. Descriptions on Euler's formula had been in the textbooks according to the 3rd through 7th National Mathematics Curriculum. However, they are gone after that. In this study, we focus on Euler characteristic and Euler's formula as an educational material for educations for the gifted or after-school educations. We first look at the mathematical history and the applications of Euler's formula and national curriculums to search for its mathematical and educational meaning. We further make a suggestion for a learning environment which provides a better education relying on search activities, not just depending on memorization, illuminated from the education of Euler's formula.

Students experience science not only through school science lessons but also through various other channels. Science-related facilities, including science museums and centers, are important channels for informal science education. Korea has a number of governmental and private facilities in which young people can experience various aspects of scientific activities, and many of them also provide the programs supporting out-of-school science activities. However, there has been no systematic survey study on those facilities providing out-of-school activities, thus they have not been used effectively as well as their social utility is not fully realized. To this end, in 2002 researchers of this study carried out surveys (1) of the facilities supporting out-of-school science activities and (2) of science programs provided by these facilities. The surveys show that there are approximately 180 facilities supporting science activities in Korea. More than 40% of them are located in Seoul and Gyeonggi areas. Among them, the proportion of special theme science museums was the greatest (37.9%). The facilities supporting out-of-school science activities usually do not target the specific age groups but are intended for all people. The proportion of governmental facilities exceeds that of private ones. 41.8% of the facilities examined in this study run their own science activity programs. Among the 10 categories of the programs, 'science class' type programs were the most common. There were more programs for elementary and middle school students than preschoolers, high school students and adults. The contents of the programs were more related to astronomy and meteorology, the observation of living things and field trips. Despite their high practical potential, the special theme science museums were found to be lacking in relevant programs, which could fulfill their values for informal science education.

This study aims to investigate an approach to teach proportional reasoning in elementary mathematics class by analyzing the proportional strategies the students use to solve the proportional reasoning tasks and their percentages of correct answers. For this research 174 sixth graders are examined. The instrument test consists of various questions types in reference to the previous study; the proportional reasoning tasks are divided into algebraic-geometric, quantitative-qualitative and missing value-comparisons tasks. Comparing the percentages of correct answers according to the task types, the algebraic tasks are higher than the geometric tasks, quantitative tasks are higher than the qualitative tasks, and missing value tasks are higher than the comparisons tasks. As to the strategies that students employed, the percentage of using the informal strategy such as factor strategy and unit rate strategy is relatively higher than that of using the formal strategy, even after learning the cross product strategy. As an insightful approach for teaching proportional reasoning, based on the study results, it is suggested to teach the informal strategy explicitly instead of the informal strategy, reinforce the qualitative reasoning while combining the qualitative with the quantitative reasoning, and balance the various task types in the mathematics classroom.

The purpose of the study was to analyze and interpret parent-child dyadic discourses in depth with emphases on the ZPD system in a museum, an informal learning setting. Second graders and their parents from Seoul and its environs were voluntarily participated in the study. Data were collected from the museum documents, the photos of exhibits, and the video recordings of dyadic discourses at and between exhibits. The documents and the photos were analyzed to investigate what the topics, medium and goals of the exhibits were. The video recordings were all transcribed and analyzed to understand what and how they talked to each other through the lens of the ZPD system; situation definition, intersubjectivity, and semiotic mediation, The results of the study consisted of two parts. First, it showed that parent-child dyadic discourses were categorized in four: (1) within the actual developmental level; (2) in the zone of proximal development; (3) toward the potential developmental level; and (4) out of developmental level. The most common categories were the dyadic discourses within the actual developmental level and in the zone of proxima I development. Second, the representative cases in each categories were described and interpreted to understand the nature of parent-child dyadic discourses. It can be concluded that we gained some important understandings of an intrinsic attribute of parent-child discourses in a museum, an informal learning setting. Based on the results of the study, it can be suggested that museums make efforts to cultivate the affordance of exhibit environment to promote visitor's learning.
This study proposes University 2.0 as a model case of open, flexible, and distributed learning environment for higher education based on theoretical foundations and perspectives. As web 2.0 technologies emerge into the field of education, ways of generating and disseminating information and knowledge have been drastically changed. Professors are no longer the only source of knowledge. Students using internet often become prosumers of knowledge who search and access information through the web as well as publish their own knowledge using the web. A concept and framework of University 2.0 is introduced for implementing the new interactive learning paradigm with an open, flexible and distributed learning environment for higher education. University 2.0 incorporates online and offline learning environments with various educational media. Furthermore, it employs various learning strategies and integrates formal and informal learning through learning communities. Both instructors and students in University 2.0 environment are expected to be active knowledge generators as well as creative designers of their own learning and teaching.
Purpose: This review aims to provide an understanding of the UN recommendations regarding school disaster safety in the context of Korea's school safety system. Methods: Relevant literature and reports on the UN's school disaster safety were investigated. On basis of the analysis, this review closely examined how the UN school disaster safety had been developed and what it had proposed. Results: Major findings from this review regarding the UN school disaster safety were to: 1) utilize "all-hazards approach"; 2) focus on "community-based approach"; 3) explore "education for sustainable development"; and 4) emphasize "informal disaster safety education." Conclusion: This review on the UN school disaster safety may give a critical implication to Korea's school safety education.
We study emotion regulation in a distant CABLe (Collaborative Argumentation Based-Learning) setting at university. We analyze how students achieve the group task of synthesizing the literature on a topic through scientific argumentation on the institutional Moodle's forum. Distinguishing anticipatory from reactive emotional regulation shows how essential it is to establish and maintain a constructive working climate in order to make the best out of disagreement both on social and cognitive planes. We operationalize the analysis of anticipatory emotional regulation through an analytical grid applied to the data of two groups of students facing similar disagreement. Thanks to sharp anticipatory regulation, group 1 solved the conflict both on the social and the cognitive plane, while group 2 had to call out for external regulation by the teacher, stuck in a cyclically resurfacing dispute. While the institutional digital environment did afford anticipatory emotional regulation, reactive emotional regulation rather occurred through complementary informal and synchronous communication tools. Based on these qualitative case studies, we draw recommendations for fostering distant CABLe at university.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the direction and strategy of education for sex role concepts of children on the basis of factor analysis of the present situation in sex role concepts and their formation. Although some maintain that sex role concept of our society has been changing slowly, the traditional sex role concept still dominates and is potentially immanent. the analysis of present condition of our society indicates that the formal as well as informal education are facing with various crucial problems in providing the direction of behavior demanded for carrying out the role. The close analysis of the three theories, psychoanalytic theory , social learning theory, cognitive development theory, lends a support to the laim of the study that cognitive development theory provide an integrated frame of reference for us to see the sex role education analytically Furthermore, the factors which are found to have influences on the formation of sex role have been analyzed in three areas: Family, School and society. 1)The factors in family such as parental behavior of upbringing and their concepts of sex role have a direct relationship with the nature of sex tole concept of children. Therefore, the first step to make children to habe a new type of sex-role conception appropriate for modern societies is to change that of parental conception and attitudes. 2)the quantitative as well as the qualitative aspects of school education showed no exceptional trend from the dominant conception of the society, although school are expected to lead the society as formal education institution rather than just reflect the society. The educational activities and contents such as the conceived goal of education for eoch sex, textbook constitation, teaching behavior and sex-role concepts of teacher are found to be still dominated by the traditional sex-role assumption. 3) The social factors that have direct relationship with children's sex-role formation are social and cultural, which include social milieu, condition of employment, family structure and mass-media. Since family and school do not educate the young in a social vacuum. their educational function of sex-role formation are doomed to be limited and determined by these social factors. Unfortunately, the analysis of present conditions showed the dominance of traditional types of sex-role concepts in all these social factors. The education of sex-role concept for children should be treated as one of the most crucial value problems related with many other important problems, such as direction and patterns of behaviors of each sex, the degree of self-development and capabilities, and consequently human right, equality, humanization and the quality of happiness. Neverthless, the analysis of researches on sex-role education which have been surveyed in this study lead to a conclusion that concerted effort to change the education, formal as well as informal should be provided in every aspect of social life. If the sex role education of the past has aimed at the "feminization"of girls which indoctrinate girls into a limited and fixed role of house wives, the new education in the future should be directed foward "humanization" of both sexes which opens the diversity of roles for both boys and girl on equal levels and provide future possibilities in accordance to their individual capabilities and interests.
The $4^{th}$ industrial revolution refers to an era where machines capable of outperforming humans are created. In light of the 4th industrial revolution, university students are demanded problem solving abilities, critical thinking abilities, and problem discovering abilities as general and basic abilities. The need for changes in the university level communication education for engineering students remains imperative in this constantly changing social environment. The era where education is conducted only in classrooms is over. This paper discusses the need for diversified education such as the integration of online and offline education, the reinforcement of learning outside of the classroom as well as an education model that transcends formal and informal education such as games and activities that induce self-learning, both intentional and non-intentional learning, and the utilization of mass media and social networking systems. Through providing an education model that assesses and utilizes the data gained from the learning process provided above, this paper widens the perception of future education methods in the 4th industrial revolution.
