  • For controlling micro-flows inside a LOC (lab-on-a-chip) a syringe pump or an electronic device for EOF(electro-osmotic flow) have been used in general. However, these devices are so large and heavy that they are burdensome in the development of a portable micro-TAS (total analysis system). In this study, a new flow control system employing pressure chambers, digital switches and speed controllers was developed. This system could effectively control the micro-scale flows inside a LOC without any mechanical actuators or electronic devices We also checked the feasibility of this new control system by applying it to a LOC of micro-mixer type. Performance tests show that the developed control system has very good performance. Because the flow rate in LOC is controlled easily by throttling the speed controller, the flows in complicate microchannels network can be also controlled precisely.

  • The real chip and similarity model were used to investigate the thermal behavior and velocity distribution of air from the heat source with the location and the amount of heat experimentally and numerically, and compared. The heat generated in the block is not cooled by convection and show the high temperature by the stagnation of heat flow. After maintaining the high temperature of block by the natural convection, the sudden drop of temperature with the air flow was shown in the channel but the decreasing rate was small with the time. The inward block was effected by infinitesimal air flow generated between block and channel and outward block was effected by the entry condition.

  • Satellites with flexible lightweight solar panels are sensitive to vibration that is caused by internal actuators such as reaction or momentum wheels which are used to control the attitude of the satellite. Any infinitesimal amount of unbalance in the reaction wheels rotors will impose a harmonic excitation which may interact with the solar panels structure. Therefore, quenching the solar panel's vibration is of a practical importance. In the present work, the panels are modeled as laminated composite beam using first-order shear deformation laminated plate theory which accounts for rotational inertia as well as shear deformation effects. The vibration suppression is achieved by bonding patches of piezoelectric material with suitable dimensions at selected locations along the panel. These patches are actuated by driving control voltages. The governing equations for the system are formulated and the dynamic Green's functions are used to present an exact yet simple solution for the problem. A guide lines is proposed for determining the values of the driving voltage in order to suppress the induced vibration.

  • This research is the experimental and numerical study of investigating the characteristics of consolidation due to selfweight of soft marine clay. Column tests and centrifuge tests were carried out to selfweight of soft marine clay. Column tests and centrifuge tests were carried out to simulate the selfweight consolidations in field. Tests were conducted with changing drain boundary conditions and initial void ratios corresponding to four and five times of liquid limits. The RI meter was used to measure void ratio during consolidation of sample in column tests. Test results were analyzed by using the Terzaghi's infinitesimal strain theory and the finite strain theory.

  • Mathematical thinking can be symbolized by the external signs, and these signs determine in reverse the form of mathematical thinking. Each symbol - a symbol in algebra, a symbol in analysis, and a diagram which verifies syllogism - reflects the diverse characteristic of cogitation in mathematics and perfirms a heuristic function.

  • In this study, the effect of oil supply conditions on the dynamic performance of a hydrodynamic journal bearing is analyzed numerically. Axial length, circumferential length and location of oil grooves are considered as oil supply conditions. The perturbation equations of the perturbed film contents are obtained by applying Elrod's universal equation implementing JFO film rupture / reformation boundary conditions to Lund's infinitesimal perturbation method. The dynamic coefficients of a hydrodynamic journal bearing are calculated by solving the perturbation equations, and the linear stability analysis is carried out by using those for a variety of oil supply conditions.

  • We have investigated the blood sucking phenomena of a female mosquito. The main objective of this study is to understand the mosquito's blood sucking mechanism and eventually to develop a bio-mimic technology that can be used to resolve the problem encountered in the transport of infinitesimal biological fluids in various bio-chips and microchips. At first, the consecutive velocity fields of blood-sucking flow in a proboscis were measured using a micro-particle image velocimetry (PIV) system employed with a high-speed camera. The velocity signals of the blood-sucking flow in the proboscis represent a periodic pulsatile flow pattern and spectral analysis on the velocity waveform shows a clear peak at 6.1 Hz.

  • In this article, we study the deformation theory of locally free sheaves and Hitchin pairs over a nodal curve. As a special case, the infinitesimal deformation of these objects gives the tangent space of the corresponding moduli spaces, which can be used to calculate the dimension of the corresponding moduli space. The deformation theory of locally free sheaves and Hitchin pairs over a nodal curve can be interpreted as the deformation theory of generalized parabolic bundles and generalized parabolic Hitchin pairs over the normalization of the nodal curve, respectively. This interpretation is given by the correspondence between locally free sheaves over a nodal curve and generalized parabolic bundles over its normalization.

  • In this article, we study the existence and uniqueness of mild and classical solutions for a nonlinear impulsive differential equation with nonlocal conditions u'(t) = Au(t) + f(t, u(t); Tu(t); Su(t)), $0{\leq}t{\leq}T_0$, $t{\neq}t_i$, u(0) + g(u) = $u_0$, ${\Delta}u(t_i)=I_i(u(t_i))$, i = 1,2,${\ldots}$p, 0<$t_1$<$t_2$<$\cdots$<$t_p$<$T_0$, in a Banach space X, where A is the infinitesimal generator of a $C_0$ semigroup, g constitutes a nonlocal conditions, and ${\Delta}u(t_i)=u(t_i^+)-u(t_i^-)$ represents an impulsive conditions.

  • In this paper we consider the M/M/1 Queue with mean inter arrival time $\theta$. We derive a sample path estimator for the derivative of steady state mean system time with respect to $\theta$. We also show that the derived sample path estimate can be expressed as a sum of the IPA estimate and the other effect. We have a similar result for the derivative of limiting probability $P_k$ with respect to $\theta$.
