Fall Risk Assessments Based on Postural and Dynamic Stability Using Inertial Measurement Unit

  • Objectives: Slip and fall accidents in the workplace are one of the top causes of work related fatalities and injuries. Previous studies have indicated that fall risk was related to postural and dynamic stability. However, the usage of this theoretical relationship was limited by laboratory based measuring instruments. The current study proposed a new method for stability assessment by use of inertial measurement units (IMUs). Methods: Accelerations at different body parts were recorded by the IMUs. Postural and local dynamic stability was assessed from these measures and compared with that computed from the traditional method. Results: The results demonstrated: 1) significant differences between fall prone and healthy groups in IMU assessed dynamic stability; and 2) better power of discrimination with multi stability index assessed by IMUs. Conclusion: The findings can be utilized in the design of a portable screening or monitoring tool for fall risk assessment in various industrial settings.

  • A new method of dynamic contact force measurement between a pantograph and a contact wire is proposed in this paper The method does not require design modification of an original pantograph in order to install sensors such as load cells. Contact forces can be expressed as the sum of vertical shear forces at the support points and inertial forces. Using specially-designed strain gage rosettes. vertical shear forces at the supported points can be measured without noise mixing and thermal effects. In order to obtain contact forces from shear forces, 3 inertial force compansation methods are proposed and compared in this paper. By validation process, the new proposed measurement method is verified to be applicable to the on-line current collection test.

  • Resolved simulations are presented fur gravity current flows aiming at studying their spreading rate. The simulations are performed for two extreme configurations such as planar and cylindrical and for 3 different Grashof numbers: $10^5,\;1{\times}10^6\;and\;10^7$. Varying the size of the heavy fluid release, the study is performed for several phases of spreading, namely acceleration, slumping and inertial phases. For the simulations, efficient spectral multi-domain code is used. From the simulations results it is concluded that 2-D results predicts well the mean front velocity during the slumping phase, but fails to predict it during the inertial phase of spreading. It is also observed that the vortex dynamics of the flow is not reproduced well by the 2-D simulation.

Effect of Double Grid Cathode in IEC Device (IEC 장치에서 이중 그리드 음극의 영향)

  • We have proposed a new configuration on the cathode structure to improve a neutron yield without the application of external ion sources in an inertial electrostatic confinement (IEC) device. A neutron yield in the IEC device is closely related to the potential well structure generated inside the cathode and is proportional to the ion current. Therefore, the application of a double grid cathode structure to the IEC device is expected to produce a higher ion current and neutron yield than at a single grid cathode due to a high electric field strength generated around the cathode. These possibilities were verified as compared with the ion current calculated from both shape of the single and double grid cathode. Additionally from the results of ion's lives and trajectories examined at various outer cathode voltages and grid cathode configurations by using particle simulations, the validity of the double grid cathode was confirmed.

A Numerical Experiment on the Inter-annual Variation Induced by the Current in a Basin with Dimension Comparable to the East Sea

  • A series of numerical experiments are performed to examine the generation of inter-annual variations by an inertial current in an idealized semi-enclosed basin with dimension comparable to that of the East Sea. Model results indicate that the inter-annual variations dominate the kinetic energy spectrum with a peak around the time scales of 2-3 years. These variations are mostly due to the westward propagating meanders and large eddies induced by the instability of current, indicating their dependency on the eddy-resolving capacity of the model. They are generated in the interior of the basin but their energy is largely confined near the western boundary such that the east-west dimension of the basin cannot be considered as a critical factor as long as the basin covers enough western boundary region. Overall, this study suggests that the inter-annual variation observed in the East Sea is due to the meandering and large eddies induced by the instability of the current.

  • Mononobe-Okabe (M-O) theory is widely used for evaluating seismic earth pressure of retaining wall. It was originally developed for gravity walls, which have rigid behavior, retaining cohesionless backfill materials. However, it is used for cantilever retaining wall on the various foundation conditions. Considering only inertial force of the soil wedge as a dynamic force in the M-O method, inertial force of the wall does not take into account the effect on the dynamic earth pressure. This paper presents the theoretical background for the calculation of the dynamic earth pressure of retaining wall during earthquakes, and the current research trends are organized. Besides, the discrepancies between real seismic behavior and M-O method for inverted T-shape retaining wall with 5.4m height subjected to earthquake motions were evaluated using dynamic centrifuge test. From previous studies, it was found that application point, distribution of dynamic earth pressure and M-O method are needed to be re-examined. Test results show that real behavior of retaining wall during an earthquake has a different phase between dynamic earth pressure and inertial force of retaining wall. Moreover, when bending moments of retaining wall reach maximum values, the measured earth pressures are lower than static earth pressures and it is considered due to inertial effects of retaining wall.

  • GPS and INS integrated systems are expected to become commonly available as a result of low cost Micro-Electro-Mechanical Sensor (MEMS) technology. However, the current performance achieved by low cost sensors is still relatively poor due to the large inertial sensor errors. This is particularly prevalent in the urban environment where there are significant periods of restricted sky view. To reduce the inertial sensor error, GPS and low cost INS are integrated using a Loosely Coupled Kalman Filter architecture which is appropriate in most applications where there is good satellite availability. In this paper, we present the GPS/INS sensor Integration using Loosely Coupled Kalman Filter approach. We also compare the simulation results of Wander Azimuth Strapdown Mechanization Scheme with the reference values generated by the ZH35C trajectory simulator that is describe mathematically either by the geometry of the path, or as the position of the object over time.

Development of Effective Test Method for Positioning Accuracy of Armed Vehicle Inertial Navigation System (기동화력장비 관성항법장치의 효과적인 위치정확도 시험방법 개발)

  • Purpose: The main function of INS (Inertial Navigation System) is to measure the position of an armed vehicle and its performance is confirmed through the positioning accuracy test of Korean Defense Standards (KDS). The current standards, however, do not provide clear test methods and the conditions for performing positioning accuracy tests. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to develop a new method for positioning accuracy test which would be effective. Methods: In this study, a new INS positioning accuracy test method is suggested based on the analysis of test data collected through a statistical experiment known as central composite design. For the positioning accuracy experiment of K105A1, a self-propelled artillery, two factors of driving velocity and driving distance are considered. Results: Based on the analysis of experimental data, a regression model for the positioning error is fitted and the positioning accuracy test of INS is so developed to maximize the positioning error. The standard proximity rate is used as an additional test criterion to evaluate the performance level of INS. Conclusion: The proposed new positioning accuracy test for INS has the advantage of finding the nonconforming items effectively. It is also expected to be utilized for the other similar INS positioning accuracy tests.

  • Generally, the inertial navigation and guidance unit uses AF(Analog-to-Frequency) converters which convert analog signals into frequency signals to enhance a measurement accuracy of gyroscope and accelerometer outputs. The confidence level of AF converter is guaranteed by a prudential decision of calibration procedure and a performance of periodic calibration test. In this paper, we focus on the synchronous charge balance type AF converter which has a separate positive or negative current input and its calibration method is described. The calibration tests are classified into the scale factor error calibration and the bias calibration. These tests are automatically performed by the calibration program.

  • Ascent trajectory optimization and explicit guidance problems for a satellite launch vehicle with yaw maneuver in a 3-dimension are considered. The trajectory optimization problem with boundary conditions is formulated as a nonlinear programming problem by parameterizing the inertial pitch and yaw attitude control variables, and is solved by using the SQP algorithm. The flight constraints such as gravity-turn and range safety conditions are imposed. An explicit inertial guidance algorithm in the exoatmospheric phase is also presented. The guidance algorithm provides steering command and time-to-go value directly using the current states of the vehicle and the desired orbit insertion conditions. The liquid propelled Delta 2910 launch vehicle is used as a numerical model.
