  • The member deflection is one of the most important considerations for the serviceability evaluation of reinforced concrete structures, and the concept of the effective moment of inertia has been generally used for the estimation of beam deflections. The KCI design code adopted Branson's equation for the calculation of the effective moment of inertia, which was formulated based on the results of beam tests subjected to uniformly distributed loads. Therefore, it is worthwhile to check the applicability of the code approach on the estimation of the effective moment of inertia for the cases of beams under different loading conditions. In this study, an experimental investigation has been conducted on six beams, where primary variables were concrete compressive strengths and loading distances from supports. The test results were compared with various approaches proposed by Branson and others as well. The test results indicated that the effective moment of inertia was somewhat influenced by the moment distribution shape. Despite the different moment distribution shapes for specimens, however, the effective moment of inertia of all test beams were closely predicted by the existing methods considered in this study.

  • The approaches in many design codes for the estimation of the deflection of flexural reinforced concrete (RC) members utilize the concept of the effective moment of inertia which considers the reduction of flexural rigidity of RC beams after cracking. However, the effective moment of inertia in design codes are primarily based on the ratio of maximum moment and cracking moment of beam subjected to loading without proper consideration on many other possible influencing factors such as span length, member end condition, sectional size, loading geometry, materials, sectional properties, amount of cracks and its distribution, and etc. In this study, therefore, an experimental investigation was conducted to provide fundamental test data on the effective moment of inertia of RC beams for the evaluation of flexural deflection, and to develop a modified method on the estimation of the effective moment of inertia based on test results. 14 specimens were fabricated with the primary test parameters of concrete strength, cover thickness, reinforcement ratio, and bar diameters, and the effective moments of inertia obtained from the test results were compared with those by design codes, existing equations, and the modified equation proposed in this study. The proposed method considered the effect of the length of cracking region, reinforcement ratio, and the effective concrete area per bar on the effective moment of inertia, which estimated the effective moment of inertia more close to the test results compared to other approaches.

  • Generally, the operating efficiency of the washing machine is mostly affected by the washing time. The washing time is determined by the amount and the type of the laundry. Although the type of the laundry is easily inputted by the user, but the amount of the laundry is difficult to do. For this reason, the specific process is existed for the estimation of the laundry and the time of the washing mode is determined by the estimated laundry. Therefore, this paper proposes the washing load estimation algorithm by the inertia estimator. The proposed algorithm is implemented on the PMSM drive using the low cost position sensor for practical washing machine application. The proposed algorithm is verified by the drum washing machine for the practical load condition test.

  • The present paper, deals with the dynamic analysis of a thin-walled tower with varying cross-section and additional masses. It, especially, deals with the effect of the rotary inertia of those masses, which have been neglected up to now. Using Galerkin's method, we can find the spectrum of the eigenfrequencies and, also, the shape functions. Finally, we can solve the equations of the problem of the forced vibrations, by using Carson-Laplace's transformation. Applying this method on a tall mast with 2 concentrated masses, we can examine the effect of the rotary inertia and the diaphragmatic operation of the above masses, on the 3 first eigenfrequencies.

  • A new scheme to estimate the moment of inertia in the motor drive system in very low speed is proposed in this paper. The simple speed estimation scheme, which is usually used in most servo system for low speed operation, is sensitive to the variation of the machine parameter, especially the moment of inertia. To estimate the motor inertia value, Reduced-Order Extended Luenberger Observer (ROELO) Is applied. The effectiveness of the proposed ROELO is applied by experiments.

  • In this paper a novel estimation algorithm of mechanical parameters in two-mass system is proposed. The inertia of a load and a motor and the stiffness are estimated by using RLS (Recursive Least Square) algorithm and acceleration information of motor. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified with simulation and experiments results.

  • The validity of the existing formulas for the estimation of reflection coefficient of waves due to perforated wall is investigated using the result of hydraulic experiments conducted with perforated walls of various thickness. The result shows that, when the wall is thick, the energy loss coefficient is reduced to 62% of the value evaluated using the existing formula for sharp-crested orifice. The result also shows that the length of inertia resistance increases linearly as the thickness of the wall increases. The width of chamber to achieve the minimum reflection of waves decreases as the length of inertia resistance increases. Thus, the result found in the present study can be usful for the design of perforated wall.

  • This paper empirically examines how capital structure inertia varies across industries and there is different in industries, and whether this fact is explained by product market competition using non-financial firms listed in KOSP market over periods of 1981 to 2015. In empirical test, I find that firms with more competition environment tend to have inertia behavior in making decision of capital structure. This implies that it is explained by debt discipline effect and it is substitution for product market competitions. Also I find that manager tends to take action actively making decision of capital structure when product market competition is low. Also I show that they use debt to constraint the free cash flow. As a result, I conclude that Korean non-financial firms do not have more strong inertia behavior in capital structure rather than U.S. firms. Second, using OLS estimation, inertia effect disappears while there is strong inertia effect in relationship between inertia and product market competition. This result suggests that transaction cost is not key factor in explaining inertia behavior of capital structure.

  • Engine lubrication system is generally affected by vehicle driving conditions, which are composed of acceleration, braking deceleration and accelerating during cornering. The major reason is due to the oil pan system in which oil is directly influenced by inertia farce caused by vehicle driving conditions. Therefore, to confirm safety of engine lubrication system inertia farce effects are also considered in the developing state. For the purpose, we have carried the engine tilting tests using ourselves made test rig. Verifying the test results we also measured the inertia effects on the engine lubrication system using the circular tuning and slalom test with vehicle. Through the comparison study between two kinds of results we obtained that the engine tilting test rig was very useful to confirm the safety evaluation of engine lubrication system.

  • Using the gyro effect, Balance Beam Controller is developed with Samsung Corporation. Balance Beam Controller is possible to control the position of an object in air by controlling the attitude of inner gimbal. But in the unknown load inertia case, even a skilled worker it is not easy to operate a Balance Beam. That is caused by the difficulty to estimate the load inertia. If the amount of the gimbal operation is set excessively with a wrong load estimation, it can often cause accidents. To solve this problem, the control function which is revolving with velocity of the revolution has to be added to developed equipment. In this research, we analyze the characteristics of a Balance Beam(the smaller load inertia, the bigger force of restitution) using the angular velocity sensor, and present constant velocity revolving controller with estimating value of the load using this moving characteristics.
