An MMIC VCO Design and Fabrication for PCS Applications

  • Design and fabrication issues for an L-band GaAs Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit(MMIC) Voltage Controlled Oscillator(VCO) as a component of Personal Communications Systems(PCS) Radio Frequency(RF) transceiver are discussed. An ion-implanted GaAs MESFET tailored toward low current and low noise with 0.5mm gate length and 300mm gate width has been used as an active device, while an FET with the drain shorted to the source has been used as the voltage variable capacitor. The principal design was based on a self-biased FET with capacitive feedback. A tuning range of 140MHz and 58MHz has been obtained by 3V change for a 600mm and a 300mm devices, respectively. The oscillator output power was 6.5dBm wth 14mA DC current supply at 3.6V. The phase noise without any buffer or PLL was 93dB/1Hz at 100KHz offset. Harmonic balance analysis was used for the non-linear simulation after a linear simulation. All layout induced parasitics were incorporated into the simulation with EEFET2 non-linear FET model. The fabricated circuits were measured using a coplanar-type probe for bare chips and test jigs with ceramic packages.

A Simple Analytical Model for MEMS Cantilever Beam Piezoelectric Accelerometer and High Sensitivity Design for SHM (structural health monitoring) Applications

  • Cantilever beam MEMS piezoelectric accelerometers are the simplest and most widely used accelerometer structure. This paper discusses the design of a piezoelectric accelerometer exclusively for SHM applications. While such accelerometers need to operate at a lower frequency range, they also need to possess high sensitivity and low noise floor. The availability of a simple model for deflection, charge, and voltage sensitivities will make the accelerometer design procedure less cumbersome. However, a review of the open literature suggests that such a model has not yet been proposed. In addition, previous works either depended on FEM analysis or only reported on the fabrication and characterization of piezoelectric accelerometers. Hence, this paper presents, for the first time, a simple analytical model developed for the deflection, induced voltage, and charge sensitivity of a cantilever beam piezoelectric accelerometer.The model is then verified using FEM analysis for a range of different cases. Further, the model was validated by comparing the induced voltages of an accelerometer estimated using this model with experimental voltages measured in the accelerometer after fabrication. Subsequently, the design of an accelerometer is demonstrated for SHM applications using the analytical model developed in this work. The designed accelerometer has 60 mV/g voltage sensitivity and 2.4 pC/g charge sensitivity, which are relatively high values compared to those of the piezoresistive and capacitive accelerometers for SHM applications reported earlier.

압전종이를 이용한 그린에너지 하베스터 (Green Energy Harvester using a Piezoelectric Regenerated Paper)

  • Due to piezoelectric property of regenerated cellulose paper, a green energy harvester using an electro-active paper (EAPap) was studied. In order to design the green energy harvester, we simulated cymbal type energy harvesting structures for single and multi-stacked layers of EAPap films. From the simulation, the optimized material orientation, thickness of harvesting structure was selected. By measuring of the induced output voltage by applying stress on energy harvester will be explained in detail. Therefore we propose the feasibility of the nature-friendly piezoelectric EAPap as a new green energy harvesting material.

  • 본 논문에서는bulk dynamic threshold voltage MOSFET(B-DTMOS)와 bulk MOSFET(B-MOS)에서 hot carrier 현상으로 인한 RF 성능 저하를 비교하였다. Normal 및 moderate 모드에서 B-DTMOS의 차단주파수 및 최소잡음지수의 열화가 B-MOS 소자 보다 심하지 않음을 알 수 있었다. 실험 견과로부터 hot carrier에 의한 RF 성능 저하가 DC 특성 열화 보다 심함을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 처음으로 hot carrier 현상으로 인한 B-DTMOS 소자의 RF 전력 특성 저하를 측정하였다.

  • 전자 소자의 기술이 발달함에 따라 전력은 증가하고, 전압은 낮아지고, 입출력 범프 수가 증가하는 반면, 범프 피치는 크게 줄어들지 못하기 때문에 전력전달과 분배 문제는 점점 심각해지고 있다. 그동안 전력전달 문제를 해결하기 위해선 대부분 회로나 아키텍처 차원에서 에너지를 적게 소모하는 방법을 주로 연구해 왔으나, 최근 회로분야와 동시에 새로운 공정설계를 통해서 전력전달 및 분배를 높이고 발열 문제도 처리하는 interconnect 공정 기술이 중요시 되고 있다.

  • In this study, the dynamic characteristic of a contact wire and pantograph suppling electrical power to high-speed trains are investigated from an electrical response point of view. To analysis power line disturbance by induced contact loss phenomenon for high speed operation, a hardware Simulator which considered contact loss between contact wire and the pantograph as well as contact wire deviation is developed. It is confirmed that a contact wire and pantograph model are necessary for studying the dynamic behavior of the pantograph system. One of the most important needs accompanied by increasing the speed of high-speed train is reduced that an arc phenomenon by loss of contact brings out EMI. In case of a high-speed train using electrical power, as comparison with diesel rolling stock, PLD(Power Line Disturbance) such as harmonic, transient voltage and current, EMI, dummy signal injection etc usually occurs. Throughout experiment, it is verified that an arc phenomenon is brought out for simulator operation and consequently conducted noise is flowed in electric circuit by power line disturbance.

전기다이폴에 의해 유기되는 전송선로의 노이즈 예측 (Prediction of Noise in a Transmission Line Excited by an Electric Dipole)

  • 최근 기술의 증가로 인하여 전 분야의 전자제품은 더욱 경량화, 집적화되어가고 있으며, 안테나 역시 출력의 향상으로 전송선로 단에서의 EMC(Electromagnetic Compatibility) 해석이 중요해지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 외부의 안테나로부터 전송선로에 유기되는 노이즈를 예측하기 위하여 이론적 해석을 하였으며, 이를 전자기 시뮬레이션 해석과 비교, 검증하였다. 외부 안테나의 대표적인 예로서 본 논문에서는 전기 다이폴을 상정하였고, 이로부터 발생되는 전자기파에 의해 전송선로에 유기되는 전압, 전류를 얻어내기 위하여 수정된 전송선 방정식(modified telegrapher's equations)을 이용하여 수식을 유도하였다. 유도된 이론식은 전송선로에 대하여 전기 다이폴이 임의의 지점에 위치할 수 있도록 유도하여, 전송선로에 대하여 다양한 위치에 있는 전기다이폴에 의한 노이즈를 조사하였다.

  • 본 논문에서는 현재 가장 많이 사용되는 조명용 LED광원에 대한 EMI특성을 측정 분석 분석하였다. LED 광원의 자기장 유도전류와 각각의 인입 전원선에 대한 잡음 단자전압 등을 측정 및 분석하였으며, 향후 LED광원 관련 규격 제안시 참고자료로 활용될 것으로 판단된다.

  • This paper attempts to compensate the nonlinearity between the input voltage and the output displacement of the piezoelectric stack in dynamic actuation by the following two ways. Firstly, the charge steering by circuit configuration reduces the hysteresis of piezoelectric actuator remarkably. However, it makes the ripple in positioning due to the phase lag and noise induced from the elements of the long closed loop. Secondly, the feedforward control by neural network compensates the hysteresis of the piezoelectric actuators effectively with the appropriate selection of the input variables for the training. The improvement of the dynamic performance of the piezoelectric actuators by the developed linearization technique is verified by experiments.

  • To investigate the effect of interference current between pairs and quasi-particles, we have calculated the change I-V characteristic curve of resistively and capacitively shunted Josephson junction with external microwave by simulation of modified Stewart-McCumber model. Such rf-induced constant-voltage steps and the immunity against to noise were found to be changed in the presence of interference current.
