Xanthine Oxidase is an enzyme, which oxidizes hypoxanthine to xanthine, and xanthine to uric acid. It is widely distributed throughout various organs including the liver, gut, lungs, kidney, heart, brain and plasma. It is involved in gout pathogenesis. Hence, in the present study, topomer based Comparative Molecular Field Analysis (topomer CoMFA) was performed on a series of Xanthine oxidase antagonist named 2-(indol-5-yl) thiazole derivatives. The best topomer CoMFA model was obtained with significant cross-validated correlation coefficient ($q^2$ = 0.572) and non cross-validated correlation coefficients ($r^2$ = 0.937). The model was evaluated with six external test compounds and its $r^2{_{pred}}$ was found to be 0.553. The steric and electrostatic contribution map show that presence of bulky and electropositive group in indole thiazole ring is necessary for improving the biological activities of the compounds. The generated topomer CoMFA model could be helpful for future design of novel and structurally related xanthine oxidase antagonists.
We evaluated the potentials of 10 isothiocyanates (ITCs) from cruciferous vegetables and radish root hydrolysate for inhibiting the growth of oral pathogens, with an emphasis on assessing any structure-function relationship. Structural differences in ITCs impacted their antimicrobial activities against oral pathogens differently. The indolyl ITC (indol-3-carbinol) was the most potent inhibitor of the growth of oral pathogens, followed by aromatic ITCs (benzyl ITC (BITC) and phenylethyl ITC (PEITC)) and aliphatic ITCs (erucin, iberin, and sulforaphene). Sulforaphene, which is similar in structure, but has one double bond, showed higher antimicrobial activity than sulforaphane. Erucin, which has a thiol group, showed higher antimicrobial activity than sulforaphane, which has a sulfinyl group. BITC and iberin with a short chain exhibited higher antimicrobial potential than PEITC and sulforaphane with a longer chain, respectively. ITCs have strong antimicrobial activities and may be useful in the prevention and management of dental caries.
The present study was conducted to investigate the biochemical and cultural characteristics of Escherichia coli isolates from clinically affected chickens during the period from May 1988 to June 1989. A total of 82 E coli cultures were isolated from lesions of 75 chickens with colisepticemia. Biochemical properties of E coli isolates tested were in accordance with the general classification standard; all the isolates showed positive reaction in Catalase, Indol, and Methyl-Red tests, but negative reaction in Oxidase, Urease, $V{\ddot{o}ges$-Proskauer, Citrate utility, $H_2S$, Phenylalanine diaminase, and malonate tests. And the carbohydrate fermentation rates of them were shown to be variable. of the 82 isolates, 48(58.5%) cultures produced colicin to inhibit the indicator strain of E coli.
We have designed and synthesized the colorimetric chemosensor through the reactions of 1,2-anthraquinone and indol-3-carboxaldehyde. Due to its well conjugated D-${\pi}$-A system and the existence of NH-fragment in indole moiety, we expected that the chemosensor can detect target anions with NH-fragment in indole part of the structure. In this regard, UV-Vis absorption spectra were measured to investigate sensing properties of the probe toward different anions in DMSO. This chemosensor shows to detect fluoride anions with absorption change in intensity. These properties are mainly related to the deprotonation effect. ICT system in this molecule was also observed by the computational approach using Material Studio 4.3 package.

The reaction of 1,3,5-triketones and arylhydrazines provided indolylpyrazole derivatives in a one-pot reaction in good to moderate yields. Both the pyrazole and indole rings were constructed simultaneously with phenylhydrazine, $RCOCH_2CO$- moiety for the pyrazole and the remaining -$CH_2COR$ part for the indole ring.

The antimutagenic activity of three kinds of extract such as fresh juice, ethanol extract and water extract of Artemisia iwayomogi against 3 - amino - 1, 4 - dimethyl - 5H - pyrido [4,3-b] indol (Trp-P-1) and N - methyl - N' - nitro - N -nitrosoguanidine(MNNG) was demonstrated with the Salmonella typhimurium assay. The number of revertants per plate decreased significantly when these extracts(0.5ug/plate) added to the assay system system using S. typhimurium TA 100. These extracts also showed prominant cytotoxic activity against four different kinds of human cancer cell as human lung cancer cell (A549), breast cancer cell(MCF7), fibrosacoma cell(HT1080) and gastric cancer cell(KATOIII), respectively.
The study of interaction between riboflavin derivatives and biologically active substances was reviewed. With combination of spectroscopic methods such as NMR, UV, Fluorescence and IR, informations about interaction mechanism including hydrogen bond formation, conformation of association complex, and association constant were obtained. 1. Riboflavin associated with adenine but not with other bases found in the nucleic acids. -CONHCO- group was included in the formation of hydrogen bond with adenine. 2. Riboflavin interacted with alcohol to make a 1 : 1 association complex through the 3N-imino and 2C-carbonyl group of the isoalloxazine ring and the hydroxyl group of the alcohols. 3. Riboflavin associated with salicylates to produce the cyclic hydrogen-bonded dimer. The strongest complex was formed with salicylic acid, a weaker one with aspirin, and an even weaker one with salicylamide. 4. Other bio-active substances, orotic acid and inhibitors such as phenol, trichloroacetic acid and indol also formed hydrogen bond with riboflavin. 5. Reduced riboflavin showed strong self-association to produce the cyclic hydrogen-bonded complex and it associated with adenine and with cytosine to form 1 : 3 complex.

In order to utilize safflower seed effectively as a food material, it was processed at the conditions including roasting temperature/time of 170$\^{C}$/10 min to 210$\^{C}$/30 min, ethanol concentration of 0 to 100% (V/V) and enzyme hydrolysis with $\alpha$-amylase, $\beta$-amylase, amyloglucosidase and cellulase. Safflower seed extracts had the highest soluble solid content at the condition of 60% ethanol concentration, roasting at 190$\^{C}$ for 20 min and hydrolysis with amyloglucosidase. Total phenolic compounds increased with the ethanol concentration, showing the highest at the condition of 80% ethanol, roasting at 170$\^{C}$ for 30 min and hydrolysis with amyloglucosidase. High level total flavonoid was observed at the condition of 80% ethanol, roasting at 210$\^{C}$ for 30 min and hydrolysis with amyloglucosidase. Safflower seed had sucrose as major free sugar as well as xylose and arabinose as minor free sugars. Organic acids in safflower seed included oxalic, citric, magic and fumaric acid. Serotonin I (N-[2-(5-hydroxy-1H-indo-1-3-yl)ethyl]ftrulamide) and serotonin II (N-[2-(5-hydroxy-1H-indol-3yl)ethyl]-p-coumaramide) as antioxidant compounds increased with ethanol concentration, showing the highest revel at 60% ethanol. Acacetin content increased with temperature and roasting time, with a maximum of 69.47 mg% at 210$\^{C}$ for 30 min.
A hybrid thermosetting maleimido epoxy compound 4-(N-maleimidophenyl) glycidylether (N-MPGE) containing Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions was prepared by curing N-MPGE and tetradentate Schiff base Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes. The curing polymerization reaction of N-MPGE with metal complexes as curing agents was studied. The cured samples were studied for thermal stability, chemical (acid/alkali/solvent) and water absorption resistance and homogeneity of the cured systems. The tetradentate Schiff base, 3-[(Z)-2-piperazin-1-yl-ethylimino]-1,3-dihydro indol-2-one was synthesized by the condensation of Isatin (Indole-2, 3-dione) with 1-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine (AEP). Its complexes with Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) have been synthesized and characterized by microanalysis, conductivity, Uv-Visible, FT-IR, TGA and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The spectral data revealed that the ligand acts as a neutral tetradentate Schiff base and coordinating through the azomethine nitrogen, two piperazine nitrogen atoms and carbonyl oxygen.
Chemical investigation on a colonial marine tunicate, Didemnum sp. led to the isolation of a series of indole alkaloids including a new (1) and two known metabolites (2-3). Based on the spectroscopic analysis including 1D and 2D NMR along with MS spectra, the structure of 1 (16-epi-18-acetyl herdmanine D) was elucidated as a new amino acid derivative. The absolute configuration of 1 was determined by comparison of specific rotation with the known compound. The structures of compounds 2 and 3 were also identified as bromoindole containing compounds N-(6-bromo-1H-indole-3-carbonyl)-L-arginine and (6-bromo-^1H-indol-3-yl) oxoacetamide, respectively, based on $^1H$ and $^{13}C$ NMR data, MS data and specific rotation value. Their pharmacological potentials as antibacterial agents and FXR antagonists were investigated, but no significant activity was found. However, the structural similarity of compound 1 to compound 4 suggested the anti-inflammatory potential of compound 1.
