The ability to read, write, and edit genomic information in living organisms can have a profound impact on research, health, economic, and environmental issues. The CRISPR/Cas system, recently discovered as an adaptive immune system in prokaryotes, has revolutionized the ease and throughput of genome editing in mammalian cells and has proved itself indispensable to the engineering of immune cells and identification of novel immune mechanisms. In this review, we summarize the CRISPR/Cas9 system and the history of its discovery and optimization. We then focus on engineering T cells and other types of immune cells, with emphasis on therapeutic applications. Last, we describe the different modifications of Cas9 and their recent applications in the genome-wide screening of immune cells.
Coccidiosis, an intestinal infection caused by intracellular protozoan parasites belonging to several different species of Eimeria seriously impairs the growth and feed utilization of livestock and poultry. Due to complex life cycle of organism and intricate host immune responses to Elmeria, coccidia vaccine development has been difficult. Understanding of basic imunobiology of pertinent host-parasite interactions is necessary for the development of novel control strategy. Although chickens infected with Eimeria spp. produce parasite-specific antibodies in both the circulation and mucosal secretions, antibody mediated responses play a minor role in protection gainst coccidiosis. Rather, increasing evidence show that cell-mediated immunity plays a major role in resistance to coccidiosis. T-lymphocytes appear to respond to coccidiosis both through cytokine production and a direct cytotoxic attack on infected cells. The exact mechanisms by which T-cells eliminate the parasites, however, remain to be investigated. Since it is crucial to understand the intestinal immune system in order to develop an immunological control strategy against any intestinal immune system in order to develop an immunological control strategy against any intestinal diseases, this presentation will summarize our current understanding of the avian intestinal immune system and mucosal immune responses to Eimeria, to provide a conceptual overview of the complex molecular and cellular events involved in intestinal immune responses to enteric pathogens.

Panax ginseng Meyer, belonging to the genus Panax of the family Araliaceae, is known for its human immune system-related effects, such as immune-boosting effects. Ginseng polysaccharides (GPs) are the responsible ingredient of ginseng in immunomodulation, and are classified as acidic and neutral GPs. Although GPs participate in various immune reactions including the stimulation of immune cells and production of cytokines, the precise function of GPs together with its potential receptor(s) and their signal transduction pathways have remained largely unknown. Animal lectins are carbohydrate-binding proteins that are highly specific for sugar moieties. Among many different biological functions in vivo, animal lectins especially play important roles in the immune system by recognizing carbohydrates that are found exclusively on pathogens or that are inaccessible on host cells. This review summarizes the immunological activities of GPs and the diverse roles of animal lectins in the immune system, suggesting the possibility of animal lectins as the potential receptor candidates of GPs and giving insights into the development of GPs as therapeutic biomaterials for many immunological diseases.
Abnormal spinal disease and function, in addition to simple musculoskeletal problems, can disrupt homeostasis and cause direct and indirect physiological side effects. Part or all of the immune function can be compromised, exposing you to more disease, especially if the nerves running through your spine do not deliver the proper signals to the organs that regulate your immune system. This study focuses on basic anatomic and physiological knowledge and seeks to consider potential mechanisms by which spinal function may potentially help maintain or improve immune function. To this end, we examine the roles of the spine in relation to hematopoiesis, stress, respiration, spine-nerve relationships, and the immune system, and confirm that these roles may influence immune function.
Conventional artificial intelligence systems are not properly responding under dynamically changing environments. To overcome this problem, reactive planning systems implementing new Al principles, called behavior-based Al or emergent computation, have been proposed and confirmed their usefulness. As another alternative, biological information processing systems may provide many feasible ideas to these problems. Immune system, among these systems, plays important roles to maintain its own system against dynamically changing environments. Therefore, immune system would provide a new paradigm suitable for dynamic problem dealing with unknown environments. In this paper, a new approach to behavior-based Al by paying attention to biological immune system is investigated. The feasibility of this method is confirmed by applying to behavior control of an autonomous mobile robot in cluttered environment.
In this paper, we propose an adaptive mechanism based on humoral immune algorithm and neural network identifier technique. It is also applied for an autonomous guided vehicle (AGV) system. When the immune algorithm is applied to the PID controller, there exists the case that the plant is damaged due to the abrupt change of PID parameters since the parameters are almost adjusted randomly. To slove this problem, we use the neural network identifier technique for modeling the plant humoral immune algorithm (HIA) which performs the parameter tuning of the considered model, respectively. Finally, the experimental results for control of steering and speed of AGV system illustrate the validity of the proposed control scheme. Also, these results for the proposed method show that it has better performance than other conventional controller design method such as PID controller.

Immune system is an evolutionary biological system to protect Innumerable foreign materials such as virus, germ cell, and et cetera. Immune algorithm is the modeling of this system'response that has adaptation and reliableness when disturbance occur. In this paper, immune algorithm controller was proposed to control four wheels steering(4ws) Automated Guided vehicle(AGV) in container yard. And then the simulation result was analysed and compared with the results of NN-PID controller.
The periodontal diseases are infections caused by bacteria in oral biofilm, a gelatinous mat commonly called dental plaque, which is a complex microbial community that forms and adhere to tooth surfaces. Host immune-pathogen interaction in periodontal disease appears to be a complex process, which is regulated not only by the acquired immunity to deal with ever-growing and -invading microorganisms in periodontal pockets, but also by genetic and/or environmental factors. However, our understanding of the pathogenesis in human periodontal diseases is limited by the lack of specific and sensitive tools or models to study the complex microbial challenges and their interactions with the host's immune system. Recent advances in cellular and molecular biology research have demonstrated the importance of the acquired immune system in fighting the virulent periodontal pathogens and in protecting the host from developing further devastating conditions in periodontal infections. The use of genetic knockout and immunodeficient mouse strains has shown that the acquired immune response, in particular, $CD4^+$ T-cells plays a pivotal role in controlling the ongoing infection, the immune/inflammatory responses, and the subsequent host's tissue destruction.

In this paper, we propose a nonlinear variable PID controller using a cell-mediated immune response. An immune feedback response is based on the functioning of biological T-cells. An immune feedback response and P-controller of conventional PID controllers resemble each other in role and mechanism. Therefore, we extend immune feedback mechanism to nonlinear PE controller. And in order to choose the optimal nonlinear PID controller games, we also propose the on-line tuning algorithm of nonlinear functions parameters in immune feedback mechanism. The trained parameters of nonlinear functions are adapted to the variations of the system parameters and any command velocity. And the adapted parameters obtained outputs of nonlinear functions with an optimal control performance. To verify performances of the proposed control systems, the speed control of nonlinear BC motor is performed. The simulation results show that the proposed control systems are effective in tracking a command velocity under system variations.
Cell therapy applied to wound healing or tissue regeneration presents a revolutionary realm to which principles of gene engineering and delivery may be applied. One promising application is the transplantation of cells into the wounded tissue to help the tissue repair. However, when cells are transplanted from in vitro to in vivo, immune rejection occurs due to the immune response triggered by the activation of T-cell, and the transplanted cells are destroyed by the attack of activated T-cell and lose their function. Immune suppressant such as FK506 is commonly used to suppress immune rejection during transplantation. However, such kind of immune suppressants not only suppresses immune rejection in the periphery of transplanted cells but also suppresses whole immune response system against pathogenic infection. In order to solve this problem, we developed a method to protect the desired cells from immune rejection without impairing whole immune system during cell transplantation. Previously, we reported the success of constructing glomerular epithelial cells for removal of immune complex, in which complement receptor of type 1 (CR1) was over-expressed on the membrane of renal glomerular epithelial cells and could bind immune complex of DNA/anti-DNA-antibody to remove immune complex through phagocy-tosis [1]. Attempting to apply the CR1-expressing cells to cell therapy and evade immune rejection during cell transplantation, we constructed three plasmids containing genes encoding a soluble fusion protein of cytolytic T lymphocyte associated antigen-4 (CTLA4Ig) and an enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP). The plasmids were transfected to the above-mentioned glomerular epithelial cells to express both genes simultaneously. Using the clone cells for cell transplantation showed that mice with autoimmune disease prolonged their life significantly as compared with the control mice, and two injections of the cells at the beginning of two weeks resulted in remarkable survivability, whereas it requires half a year and 50 administrations of proteins purified from the same amount of cells to achieve the same effect.
