  • After a disaster like the catastrophic earthquake, the government have to use rapid assessment of the condition (or damage) of bridges, buildings and other infrastructures is mandatory for rapid feedbacks, rescue and post-event management. This work studies the tracking control problem of a class of strict-feedback nonlinear systems with input saturation nonlinearity. Under the framework of dynamic surface control design, RBF neural networks are introduced to approximate the unknown nonlinear dynamics. In order to address the impact of input saturation nonlinearity in the system, an auxiliary control system is constructed, and by introducing a class of first-order low-pass filters, the problems of large computation and computational explosion caused by repeated differentiation are effectively solved. In response to unknown parameters, corresponding adaptive updating control laws are designed. The goals of this paper are towards access to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services, promotion of inclusive and sustainable urbanization and participation, implementation of sustainable and disaster-resilient buildings, sustainable human settlement planning and manage. Simulation results of linear and nonlinear structures show that the proposed method is able to identify structural parameters and their changes due to damage and unknown excitations. Therefore, the goal is believed to achieved in the near future by the ongoing development of AI and control theory.

  • Explosion experiments were conducted using a rectangular concrete structure filled with hydrogen-air mixture (29.0%). In addition, the effect of ignition location on explosion was investigated. The impact on overpressure and flame was increased with the increasing distance of the ignition source from the vent. Importantly, depending on the ignition location the incident pressure was up to 24.4 times higher, while the reflected pressure was 8.7 times higher. Additionally, a maximum external overpressure of 30.01 kPa was measured at a distance of 2.4 m from the vent, predicting damage to humans at the injury level (1% fatality probability). Whereas, no significant damage would occur at a distance of 7.4 m or more from the vent.

  • Recently the problems related to the failure of the retaining wall structure has become great concern since the damage to the properties and human losses have occurred in the rainy season. However, a detail guideline on safety inspection and appropriate diagnosis on the retaining wall structure have not yet proposed and therefore, the inspection process and results are mainly dependant upon the engineers. The objective of this study is to propose objective and quantitative evaluation method for the condition based on the damage shapes and material types. In this purpose, composing materials of retaining wall are divided Into concrete, gabion, stone and reinforced earth, and then the evaluation items and method are suggested on the basis of the materials and structural characteristics of the retaining wall.

  • The purpose of this article was to contribute to the knowledge of physiological and pathological changes of aging skeletal muscles, and of therapic method. By aging there were changes of distribution of muscle fibers, the loss of muscle mass, the loss of the number of muscle fibers, the loss of glycolysis capacity, the decrease of the oxidative enzymes and muscle vascularization in the skeletal muscles. And as a pathological change, the exhaustive maximal exercise increased oxidative stress that led to oxidative damage which were shown to be implicated in promoting aging. The property of intensity and duration exercise is important not only in keeping human health and physical fitness from oxidative stress, but also for the maintenance of well-being and quality of life.

  • Blasting operations associated with rock excavation work may have an environmental impact in nearby structures or human beings. With the increase of construction work in urban areas, vibration problems and complaints have also increased. In order to determine the optimum design parameters for safe blast, it is essential to understand blast mechanism, design variables involved in blast-induced damage, and their effects on the blasting results. This paper deals with the characteristics of ground vibrations, air blast and fly rock caused by blast, including the general method of establishing the vibration predictors, and damage criteria suggested by various investigators. The results of field measurements from open pit mine and tunnel construction work are discussed. Basic concepts of how to design blast parameters to control the generation of ground vibrations, air blast and fly rock are presented.

  • The objective of this investigation is to examine the influence of the micro catheters, which mimic the intravascular micro active endoscopes, on local pressure changes and flow rate in an arterial branch model similar to the femoral artery of human. The effects of branch to main lumen flow rate ratios and the locations of a catheter tip were found to be significant on the local pressure changes. Relatively large pressure drops and an increase in shear stress due to the obstruction effects may induce an endothelial cell damage and a change in arterial wall permeability, which have been reported to be the primary cause of the initiation of the atherosclerosis and other major vascular diseases.

  • Replication Protein A (RPA) is the eukaryotic single-stranded DNA binding protein. It involves in DNA replication, repair, and damage response. Among three subunits, RPA70 has a protein-protein binding domain (RPA70N) at the N-terminal. It has known that the domain recruits several damage response proteins to the damaged site. Also, it is suggested that there are more candidates that interact with RPA70N. Even though several studies performed on the structural aspects of RPA70N and its ligand binding, the backbone assignments of RPA70N is not available in public. In this study, we present the backbone assignments of RPA70N.

  • Mulberry fruits also have tremendous potential for providing various valuable industrial products of very high economic value for human beings. Nevertheless, through global warming, the popcorn disease caused by sclerotia forming fungi reduces the productivity of mulberry fruits in worldwide. So, in this study, we investigated damage ratio of mulberry popcorn disease in mulberry fruit production farm (Buan, Jeongueb, Sangju, Gochang in Korea). In Jeonbuk Buan, popcorn disease rate was the highest about 30%, on the other hand, in case of Gyungbuk Sangju and Jeonbuk Gochang, not damage. Also, we investigated about popcorn disease prevention by various of chemical treatment methods.

  • This study is intended to propose a systematic and practical life cycle cost(LCC) model for the development of the reliability-based seismic safety and cost-effective performance criteria for design and upgrading of long-span PC bridges. The LCC models consist of five cost functions such as initial cost, repair/replacement cost, human losses, road user cost, and indirect losses of regional economy. The proposed model Is successfully expressed in temrs of Park-Ang damage indices and life cycle damage probability obtained from SMART-DRAIN-2DX which is an existing algorithm for nonlinear time history analysis. The proposed LCC model is successfully applied to a viaduct constructed by PSM, in Seoul. Based on the observations, the proposed systematic procedure for the formulation of LCC model may be useful for the development of the reliability-based seismic safety and cost-effective performance criteria for design and upgrading of long-span PC bridges.

  • Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation induces the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that promote apoptotic cell death. We showed that cytosolic $NADP^+$-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDPc) plays an essential role in the control of cellular redox balance and defense against oxidative damage, by supplying NADPH for antioxidant systems. In this study, we demonstrated that knockdown of IDPc expression by RNA interference enhances UVB-induced apoptosis of immortalized human HaCaT keratinocytes. This effect manifested as DNA fragmentation, changes in cellular redox status, mitochondrial dysfunction, and modulation of apoptotic marker expression. Based on our findings, we suggest that attenuation of IDPc expression may protect skin from UVB-mediated damage, by inducing the apoptosis of UV-damaged cells.
