  • This paper deals with the free vibrations of horizontally curved beams with the general boundary condition, which consists of translational and rotational springs. The equations of general boundary condition of such beams are derived, while the ordinary differential equations governing free vibrations are adopted from the literature. The parabola as the curved beam's curvilinear shape is considered in numerical examples. For calculating the natural frequencies, the governing equations are solved by numerical methods. The Runge-Kutta and Determinant Search Methods are used for integrating the differential equations and for calculating the natural frequencies, respectively. for validation purpose, the numerical results obtained herein are compared to those obtained from the SAP 2000. With regard to numerical results, the relationships between frequency parameters and various beam parameters are presented in the forms of Table and figures.

  • Recently, number of smart material are investigated and widely used in civil construction and other industries. Present study investigates the application of smart semi-active piezoelectric friction damper (PFD) made with piezoelectric material for the seismic control of the horizontally curved bridge isolated with lead rubber bearing (LRB). The main aim of the study is to investigate the effectiveness of hybrid system and to find out the optimum parameters of PFD for seismic control of the curved bridge. The selected curved bridge is a continuous three-span concrete box girder supported on pier and rigid abutment. The PFD is located between the deck and abutments or piers in chord and radial directions. The bridge is excited with four different earthquake ground motions with all three components (i.e. two horizontal and a vertical) having different characteristics. It is observed that the use of semi-active PFD with LRB is quite effective in controlling the response of the curved bridge as compared with passive system. The incorporation of the smart damper requiring small amount of energy in addition with an isolation system can be used for effective control the curved bridge against the dynamic loading.

  • Recently, it has been reported that buried pipes' crack is concentrated on curved parts. In this study, 3D-Finite element analysis is performed for Analytical Evaluation on the Structural Safety of Horizontally Curved Parts of Buried Pipe. The constructed pipe cracked in curved parts of pipe is analyzed and all kinds of loads affected to buried pipes are considered. Displacement, stresses and buckling analysis are performed. The stress analysis shows that stress in curved parts is larger than stresses in straight parts and exceeds allowable stress in some parts. So, stress analysis on curved parts is needed for safety for buried pipe.

  • Although a limited number of experimental investigations and finite element analyses revealed that a curved web panel in practical design has a considerable reserve strength after the elastic buckling as a straight girder web panel, the current Guide Specifications for Horizontally Curved Steel Girder Highway Bridges (AASHTO, 2003) do not consider the postbuckling strength in the ultimate shear strength due to lack of a comprehensive study. In this study, the ultimate shear strength behavior of horizontally curved steel web panels was investigated through nonlinear finite element analysis and experimental test. It was found that curved web panels used in practical designs are able to develop the postbuckling strength that is equivalent to that of straight girder web panels having the same dimensional and material properties.

  • This paper deals with the free vibration of horizontally curved beams with transition currie. Based on the dynamic equilibrium equations of a curved beam element subjected to the stress resultants and inertia forces, the governing differential equations are derived for the out-of-plane vibration of curved beam with variable curvature. These equations are applied to the beam having transition curve in which the clothiod curve is chosen in this study. The differential equations are solved by the numerical methods lot calculating the natural frequencies and mode shapes. For verifying theories developed herein, the frequency parameters obtained from this studs and ADINA are compared with each other. As the numerical results, the various parametric studies effecting on natural frequencies are investigated and those results are presented in tables and figures.

  • This study explores the free, out-of-plane vibrations of horizontally circular curved beams. The differential equations governing the free vibration of such beams, including the effects of warping and rotatory inertia, are derived and solved numerically. The Runge-Kutta method and the Determinant Search method combined with Regula-Falsi method are used to integrate the differential equations and to obtain the natural frequencies, respectively. The lowest three natural frequencies are calculated over a wide range of non-dimensional system parameters: the horizontal rise to span length ratio, the slenderness ratio, the stiffness parameter, and the warping parameter. It is expected that the results obtained herein can be used practically for the design of curved member systems.

  • This paper presents a semi-analytical solution of simply supported horizontally composite curved I-beam by trigonometric series. The flexibility of the interlayer connectors between layers both in the tangential direction and in the radial direction is taken into account in the proposed formulation. The governing differential equations and the boundary conditions are established by applying the variational approach, which are solved by applying the Fourier series expansion method. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed formulation are validated by comparing its results with both experimental results reported in the literature and FEM results.

  • This study examines the influence of curved, steel, I-girder bridge configuration on girder end reactions and cross frame member forces during seismic events. Simply-supported bridge finite element models were created and examined under seismic events mimicking what could be experienced in AASHTO Seismic Zone 2. Bridges were analyzed using practical ranges of: radius of curvature; girder and cross frame spacings; and lateral bracing configuration. Results from the study indicated that: (1) radius of curvature had the greatest influence on seismic response; (2) interior (lowest radius) girder reactions were heavily influenced by parameter variations and, in certain instances, uplift at their bearings could be a concern; (3) vertical excitation more heavily influenced bearing and cross frame seismic response; and (4) lateral bracing helped reduce seismic effects but using bracing along the entire span did not provide additional benefit over placing bracing only in bays adjacent to the supports.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to present an analytical method for free vibration of stepped horizontally curved members on two-parameter elastic foundation. The ordinary differential equations governing the free vibration of such beams are derived as non-dimensional forms including the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation. The governing equations are solved numerically for the circular, parabolic, sinusoidal and elliptic curved beams with hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped end constraints. As the numerical results, the lowest four natural frequency parameters are presented as the functions of various non-dimensional system parameters. Also the typical mode shapes are presented.
