The intergenerational transfer between parents and children is a major concern due to low birth rates and aging society of Korea. This study investigated the influences of children's support for parent regarding parents' decision to bequest, including the influences of parental characteristics, household-related factors, and characteristics of children. The data are the 5th wave of KReIS, a sample of 1,834 married household heads(HHs), which were classified into 142 baby boomers (1955-1963), 534 post-liberation HHs (1945-1954), and 1,158 Japanese-era HHs (-1945). The results were as follows: First, 49.3% of baby boomer HHs, 59.2% of post-liberation HHs, and 59.1% of Japanese-era HHs, were willing to make bequest decision. Second, in the baby boomer HHs, although the children's contact with their parents represented an emotional resource transfer, a child's economic resource transfer to his/her parents did not affect the parents' bequest decisions. However, in the post- liberation HHs, children's contact with parents, and economic resource transfers were significant variables. In addition, in the Japanese-era HHs, only children's contact with their parents was a significant variable. Third, in the baby boomer HHs, the variables that influenced parents' bequest decisions were household financial assets and having a daughter rather than having son and daughter. However, the variables that heavily influenced bequest decisions of the post-liberation HHs were the presence of a spouse, home ownership, household expenditures, and satisfaction of relationships with children. In the Japanese-era HHs, the variables that significantly affected parents' bequest decisions were home ownership, household expenditures, and household financial assets.
This qualitative research was designed to explore the use of housing among Korean Chinese people in Harbin, China. Focusing on the use which based on the epistemology of housing adjustment, this was particularly designed to examine its cultural assimilation and acculturation on the way of life course, it employed the in-depth interview on the oral history of 5 interviewees in their 60s and 70s, individualized interviews were conducted from May 28 to 31 in 2010. Key findings were summarized as follows; 1. The free market reform in China resulted in privatization that allowed respondents to become homeowners, and the ownership was viewed as part of family asset centered upon a sense of solidarity. 2. Although homeowners in multi-story houses were responsible to decorate interior spaces, the common features in using interior spaces were found: entrance had no thresholds; kitchen was small, lack of storage cabinets, tile-flooring; washers were installed inside bathroom; and newly built apartment didn't have proper space to store Korean fermented foods. It was observed that housing adaptation outweighed housing adjustment. Those who used to live in Chinese houses with indoor-wearing-shoes or Russian houses with indoor-wearing-slippers were receptive to the use of dining table and bed, and the community heating system discouraged the use of individual electric water heater because of high electricity cost. 3. In daily life, eating habit wasn't much changed to the Chinese style, meals were shared, dish sterilizer was popular, and Kimchi fridge wasn't used. Because of the influence of the Chinese culture, such Korean traditions as ancestral rites and bedroom allocation tradition faded away, but traditional family values remained unchanged. In conclusion, Korean Chinese people experience normative housing deficits and adaptation selectively incurred. It's implied that residential design meets the needs resulting from the dual culture in terms of cultural assimilation and acculturation.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the characteristics and economic status of deficit households compared to surplus households. Data from The Household Income and Expenditure Survey 2005 by NSO and 50, 207 salary/wage earners' households were used for the analysis. The statistical methods used were GLM, logit, and cluster analyses. The analysis results showed that 25.3 percent of the households were deficit households. Approximately half of the lowest 20% income group were deficit households. Income deficit households earned 1, 273 thousand less than that of surplus households, whereas consumption of deficit households was 1, 006 thousand more than that of surplus households. The average propensity of consumption of deficit households was 142.1. According to the logit analysis, factors contributing to the probability of belonging to a deficit household included income level, household size, age and educational level, occupation, homeownership, car ownership, and wife's employment status. Deficit households were classified into 5 types: 1) health care expenditure-dominated group, 2) housing expenditure-dominated group, 3) education expenditure-dominated group, 4) money transfer-dominated group, and 5) overall-overconsumption group. The overall-overconsumption group was the largest group of all at 58.5%. It was found that for all five groups, the changes in household size, income group, home ownership, and occupation of the individual were variables that influenced the probability of belonging to a certain group.
