  • Linear motors are efficient mechanism that offers high speed and positioning accuracy. By eliminating mechanical transmission mechanisms, much higher speeds and greater acceleration can be achieved without backlash or excessive friction. However, an important disadvantage of linear motor system is its high power loss and heating up of motor and neighboring machine components on operation. Therefore, it is necessary to design moving table with high stiffness, high efficiency and light weight construction. This paper presents the development of moving table using composite material. In order to develop light weight construction of moving table, finite element analysis is performed to find best moving table construction and composite stacking sequence. NASTRAN and MINITAB were used as the optimizer. A prototype for the moving table using composite material was created.

  • A large number of the set-nets are set in Namhaedo coast of Korea. The floats of these set-nets are not only small even in case of large floats but also they scarcely have distinguishable marks such as light buoys or flags, so that they are very hard to be recognized by naked eyes and thus became probable obstacles to navigation for the passing ships and the fishing vessels. In order to research the capability of detecting such nets with Radar, the author investigated a maximum detectable range of the ordinarly large floatsand of a floating corner reflectors of various size and shape by Radar. The results obtained are as follows; 1. A maximum detectable range of large floats at a close range can be calculated by the Radar equation in sufficient accuracy. 2. Large floats of the large set-nets are also detectable by Radar even though it's detectable range boundary was within 0.2-0.65 miles. And the Radar picture of large floats was easier to be found with somewhat higher setting of the gain control on shorter range scale of the 1 mile. 3. Floating corner reflector rather suitable for set-net floats of "S" type reflector proposed in this paper, of which the dimension must be above 17cm in diameter to be detectable by Radar at 2 miles.t 2 miles.

  • A low power CMOS control circuit is applied in an integrated DC-DC buck converter. The integrated converter is composed of a feedback control circuit and power block with 0.35 ${\mu}m$ CMOS process. A current-sensing circuit is integrated with the sense-FET method in the control circuit. In the current-sensing circuit, a current-mirror is used for a voltage follower in order to reduce power consumption with a smaller chip-size. The N-channel MOS acts as a switching device in the current-sensing circuit where the sensing FET is in parallel with the power MOSFET. The amplifier and comparator are designed to obtain a high gain and a fast transient time. The converter offers well-controlled output and accurately sensed inductor current. Simulation work shows that the current-sensing circuit is operated with an accuracy of higher than 90% and the transient time of the error amplifier is controlled within $75{\mu}sec$. The sensing current is in the range of a few hundred ${\mu}A$ at a frequency of 0.6~2 MHz and an input voltage of 3~5 V. The output voltage is obtained as expected with the ripple ratio within 1%.

  • In order to meet the requirement for higher thickness accuracy in tandem cold rolling processes, it is strongly necessary to have good performance in control units. To meet this requirement, this paper suggested an output regulating control system with a roll-eccentricity estimator for each rolling stand of tandem cold mills. Considering entry thickness variation and roll eccentricity simultaneously as the major disturbances, a synthesis of multivariable control systems was presented based on H$\infty$ control theory, which could reflect the knowledge of input direction and spectrum of disturbance signals on design. Then, to effectively reject roll eccentricity, a weight function having some poles on the imaginary axis was introduced. This lead to a non-standard H$\infty$ control problem, and the design procedures for solving this problem were analytically presented. The effectiveness of the proposed control method was evaluated through computer simulations and compared to that of the conventional linear quardratic control and feedforward control methods for roll eccentricity.

  • In order to analyze travel mode choice behavior, behavioral models including logit model, based on revealed preference theory, have been using easily measurable variables such as individual socioeconomic characteristics and physical attributes of travel modes. But some recent attitudinal models of travel choice behavior have implied that the negligence of individual psychological variables and individual choice constraints in travel mode choice might preclude better prediction of individual travel mode choice behavior. In this context, this study was attempted to reconstruct an attitudinal model(AM), especially focused on the decision rules in travel mode choice decision making process, consistent with the conceptual framework relating individual attitude and choice constraints to choice behavior. And to evaluate the strengths of the AM to other comparative models(logit, linear-additive, conjunctive, lexicographic model) in predicting travel mode choice bebavior, an empirical study of the mode choice in work-trip to CBD in Seoul was performed. According to the results the percent of correct prediction(PCP) derived from the AM was higher than those derived from comparative models by at least 7 to 20% in predicting travel mode choice. But each model produced a different prediction accuracy depending on market segmentation by travel modal users, individual socioeconomic characteristics, transportation system characteristics, and satisfaction levels. The finding that different groups divided by a certain criterion employ different decision rules supports the necessity of developing a choice model such as the AM combining compensatory and noncompensatory decision rules, and suggests that a proposed transportation system management plan or policy may have different effects on each group.

  • In recent years, several LCL filter design methods for different converter topologies have been published, many of which use analytical expressions to calculate the ideal converter AC voltage harmonic spectrum. This paper presents the LCL filter design methodology but the focus is on presentation and validation of the non-iterative filter design method for a grid-connected three-phase two-level PWM-VSC. The developed method can be adapted for different converter topologies and PWM algorithms. Furthermore, as a starting point for the design procedure, only the range of PWM carrier frequencies is required instead of an exact value. System nonlinearities, usually omitted from analysis have a significant influence on VSC AC voltage harmonic spectrum. In order to achieve better accuracy of the proposed procedure, the system nonlinear model is incorporated into the method. Optimal filter parameters are determined using the novel cost function based on higher frequency losses of the filter. An example of LCL filter design for a 40 kVA grid-connected PWM-VSC has been presented. Obtained results have been used to construct the corresponding laboratory setup and measurements have been performed to verify the proposed method.

  • This paper proposes a pattern recognition and classification algorithm based on a circular structure that can reflect the characteristics of the sEMG (surface electromyogram) signal measured in the arm without putting the placement limitation of electrodes. In order to recognize the same pattern at all times despite the electrode locations, the data acquisition of the circular structure is proposed so that all sEMG channels can be connected to one another. For the performance verification of the sEMG pattern recognition and classification using the developed algorithm, several experiments are conducted. First, although there are no differences in the sEMG signals themselves, the similar patterns are much better identified in the case of the circular structure algorithm than that of conventional linear ones. Second, a comparative analysis is shown with the supervised learning schemes such as MLP, CNN, and LSTM. In the results, the classification recognition accuracy of the circular structure is above 98% in all postures. It is much higher than the results obtained when the linear structure is used. The recognition difference between the circular and linear structures was the biggest with about 4% when the MLP network was used.

  • In this paper, a novel higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT) is proposed for the analysis of the hygro-thermo-mechanical behavior of functionally graded (FG) plates resting on elastic foundations. The developed model uses a novel kinematic by considering undetermined integral terms and only four variables are used in this model. The governing equations are deduced based on the principle of virtual work and the number of unknown functions involved is reduced to only four, which is less than the first shear deformation theory (FSDT) and others HSDTs. The Navier-type exact solutions for static analysis of simply supported FG plates subjected to hygro-thermo-mechanical loads are presented. The accuracy and efficiency of the present model is validated by comparing it with various available solutions in the literature. The influences of material properties, temperature, moisture, plate aspect ratio, side-to-thickness ratios and elastic coefficients parameters on deflections and stresses of FG plates are also investigated.

  • This paper addresses development of the ultra-light analog sun sensors for small satellite applications. The sun sensor is suitable for attitude determination for small satellite because of its small, light, low-cost, and low power consumption characteristics. The sun sensor is designed, manufactured and characteristic-tested with the target requirements of ${\pm}60^{\circ}$ FOV (Field of View) and pointing accuracy of ${\pm}2^{\circ}$. Since the sun sensor has nonlinear characteristics between output measurement voltage and incident angle of sunlight, a higher order calibration equation is required for error correction. The error was calculated by using a polynomial calibration equation that was computed by the least square method obtained from the measured voltages vs. angles characteristics. Finally, the accuracies of 1-axis and 2-axes sun sensors, which consist of 2 detectors, are compared.
