  • Heating cables, widely used in office buildings, factories, streets and railways, deteriorate in electrical insulation during operation. The insulation deterioration of heating cables leads to electric discharges that can cause electrical fires. With this background, this paper dealt with a condition monitoring technique for heating cables by the analysis of discharge signals to prevent electrical fires. Insulation deterioration was simulated using an arc generator specified in UL1699 under AC operation, and the characteristic and propagation of discharge signals were analyzed on a 100 meter-long heating cable. Discharge signals produced by insulation deterioration were detected as a voltage pulse because they are as small as a few mV and they are attenuated through propagation path. The frequency spectrum of discharge signals mainly existed in the range from 70 kHz to 110 kHz, and the maximum attenuation of the signal was 84.8% at 100 meters away from the discharge point. Based on the experimental results, a monitoring device, which is composed of a high pass filter with the cut-off frequency of 70 kHz, a comparator, a wave shaper and a microprocessor, was designed and fabricated. Also, an algorithm was designed to discriminate the discharge signal in the presence of noise, compared with the pulse repetition period and the number of pulse counts per 100ms. In the experiment, the result showed that the prototype monitoring device could detect and discriminate the discharge signals produced at every discharge point on a heating cable.

  • In this paper, we design an acoustic meta-material silencer that operates at low frequency to reduce noise in duct. A high refractive index meta-material silencer is demonstrated with a combination of zigzag structured thin waveguide and helmholtz resonator, which reduces the speed of sound. Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis via thermo-viscous acoustic mesh is performed in order to calculate thermo-viscous dissipation in sub-wavelength waveguide. Sound power reflection, transmission and absorption coefficients are obtained utilizing 4-Microphone Method. The results show that cut-off frequency and transmission loss can be controlled through adjusting intervals of the zigzag structures. A wide-band acoustic silencer is also suggested by connecting meta-materials in series or parallel.

  • Background and Objectives : Vocal fold cyst is generally treated by surgical resection, it has a difference with vocal fold polyp, treated by conservative management first. Decrease in mucosal waves is known as main diagnostic criteria of vocal fold cyst. Sometimes there is a difficulty for diffrential diagnosis between cyst and polyp only by endoscopic examination. The purpose of the study is to identify the objective features of vocal cyst and polyp on the basis of voice analysis for the proper differential diagnosis, especially at high pitched phonation. Materials and Method : The voice analysis was done in 15 focal fold cyst patients and 42 vocal fold polyp. Parameters of perceptual assessment, acoustic and aerodynamic measure, and voice range profile were compared between two groups. Results : Vocal fold cyst patients showed significantly reduced MPT by acoustic and aerodynamic analysis, narrowed frequency-range and low maximun frequency by voice range profile analysis compared with vocal fold polyp patient. Maximun frequency 381 Hz is established for cut off value, differential diagnosis between cyst and polyp (ROC analysis, sensitivity 60%, specificity 68%). Conclusion : Voice analysis is helpful for differential diagnosis between vocal fold cyst and polyp, especially there is a difficulty for distinguish cyst from polyp at clinical situation by endoscopic examination. The result of decreased maximum frequncy at vocal fold cyst supports incomplete high-pitched phonation and falsetto regester at vocal fold cyst patients due to decreased mucosal wave, compared with vocal fold polyp patients.

  • The conventional neon transformer systems are very bulky and heavy because it consist of leakage type transformers made of silicon steel plates. In addition, it has problems in noise by a neon transformer and in possibilities of fire and electrical shock when neon tubes are destroyed. A protection circuit is designed for all types of neon transformer loaded with one or more neon tubes. Whenever the neon tube fails to be started up, comes to the life end, encounters faults with open-circuits at the output terminals of the neon transformer, the protection circuit will be initiated to avoid more critical hazards. The input of the transformer is automatically cut off when the abnormal condition occurs, preventing waste of no-load power. To improve such problems, in this paper, a new type of neon power supply systems for neon tube is designed and implemented using inverter type circuits and a newly designed lightweight transformer. In the developed neon transformer system, a 60[Hz]power input is converted to 20[KHz]high frequency using half-wave inverters, thereby the transformer reduces its size by 1/5 in volume and 1/10 in weight.

  • A laser ultrasonic inspection system is a non-contact inspection device which generates and measures ultrasounds by using laser beams. A laser ultrasonic inspection system provides a high measurement resolution because the ultrasonic signal generated by a pulse laser beam has a wide-band spectrum and the ultrasonic signal is measured from a small focused spot of a measuring laser beam. In this paper, we have investigated the detection techniques of a surface-breaking crack by using the laser ultrasonic surface waves. A crack acts as a low pass filter whose cut-off frequency is lowered in proportion to the depth of a crack. And, the center frequency value of a spectrum is decreased in proportion to the depth of a crack. In this paper, we extracted the crack information by using the frequency attenuation from the normalized transfer function spectrum of a surface-breaking crack. Also, we effectively measured the crack depth by using the decreasing value of the center frequency from a crack passed ultrasonic signal. The proposed measuring techniques of crack depths provided more precise information than the amplitude measuring technique.

  • The rectangular resonant cavity was designed and characterized as a microwave plasma source for focused ion beam. The optimum cavity was calculated analytically and analyzed in detail by using HFSS(High Frequency Structure Simulator). Since the resonant cavity can be affected by the permittivity of quartz chamber and plasma, the cavity is designed to be changeable in one direction. By observing the microwave input power at which the breakdown begins, the optimum cavity length for breakdown is measured and compared with the calculated one, showing in good agreement with the optimum length reduced by 10cm according to the permittivity change in the presence of quartz chamber. The shape of breakdown power curve as a function of pressure appears to be similar to Paschen-curve. After breakdown, plasma densities increase with microwave power and the reduced effective permittivity in the cavity with plasma results in larger optimum length. However, it is not possible to optimize the cavity condition for high density plasmas with increased input power, because too high input power causes expansion of density cutoff region where microwave cannot penetrate. For more accurate microwave cavity design to generate high density plasma, plasma column inside and outside the density cutoff region needs to be treated as a conductor or dielectric.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the food behavior and nutritional status of elementary school students in the Jeju area using Nutrition Quotient (NQ). Methods: The subjects were 440 students (235 boys and 205 girls) in the fifth and sixth grade at four elementary schools located in Jeju. Demographic, lifestyle, and environmental information was collected using a self-reported questionnaire. The food behavior checklist for children's Nutrition Quotient (NQ), consisting of 19 items, and nutrition education related information were also obtained. Results: The mean score of the children's NQ was poor, reaching 60.3 points. The percentage distribution of NQ grade was 19.8% (lowest), 18.6% (low), 45.0% (medium), 10.7% (high), and 5.9% (highest) and the factor scores for balance, diversity, abstinence, regularity, and practice were 56.6, 68.4, 71.3, 57.4, and 54.8 points, respectively. Compared with the NQ cut-off points for defining malnutrition (balance; 57, diversity; 87, abstinence; 66, regularity; 69, and practice; 67 point), average score of abstinence factor was only above the cut-off point and scores of the other factors were below the cut-off point. Subjects with higher NQ scores tended to have higher levels of exercise activity (p < 0.001), frequency of family meals (p < 0.01), and father's educational levels (p < 0.01) compared to those with lower NQ score. NQ score showed positive association with nutrition education experience and practice (p < 0.001). Conclusion: NQ score of elementary school students residing in Jeju was lower than the national average. More opportunities should be provided for participation in nutrition education, which incorporates a range of program strategies, as well as communication and education activities.

  • Jing(gong) is one of the most well known Korean traditional Samulnori instruments to the general public. Samulnori is consisted of four instruments, them being : the jingo the janggu (hour-glass drum). the kkwaenggwari, and the buk(drum). Of the four instruments, the jing with its deep, and yet soft and beautiful long lingering sound embraces the sounds of the other three. The jing is a brassware instrument, a compound of $70{\%}\;copper\;and\;22{\%}\;tin.$\;A high quality brassware is used when the jing is made. The jing is shaped with a 39-40cm circular plate and a rim that gives 7.0-7.5cm of depth to the instrument. Even with its most simple structure, when the circular plate is hit during performance, the rim which supports the circular plate gives resonance to the sound making low-frequency sounds. Therefore the range of the representative frequency of the full rim jing is between $118.4{\~}366.0[Hz],$\;the lingering sound lasts for more than 20 seconds afterwards. When the jing with half of its rim cut off is hit the basic frequency is $139.9{\~}387.5[Hz].$\;And the sound lasted for ten more seconds. The jing of its rimless frequencies are distributed between $990.5{\~}1,372[Hz].$\;And the lingering sound lasts for 5seconds afterwards. Therefore, different thickness and depth of the rim may give new resonance frequencies and alter the longing time of the sound. This thesis paper will try to reveal the relationship between the thickness or depth of the rim (which holds the bending circular plate) and the frequency or the lasting time of the sound.
