We report our research on aluminum mirror optics for future infrared astronomical satellites. For space infrared missions, cooling the whole instrument is crucial to suppress the infrared background and detector noise. In this aspect, aluminum is appropriate for cryogenic optics, because the same material can be used for the whole structure of the instrument including optical components thanks to its excellent machinability, which helps to mitigate optical misalignment at low temperatures. We have fabricated aluminum mirrors with ultra-precision machining and measured the wave front errors (WFEs) of the mirrors with a Fizeau interferometer. Based on the power spectral densities of the WFEs, we confirmed that the surface accuracy of all the mirrors satisfied the requirements for the SPICA Coronagraph Instrument. We then integrated the mirrors into an optical system, and examined the image quality of the system with an optical laser. As a result, the total WFE is estimated to be 33 nm (rms) from the Strehl ratio. This is consistent with the WFEs estimated from the measurement of the individual mirrors.
This paper is the first step fur thermo-mechanical stress analyses of part with coated layer under contact load. A lot of coated material is applied in many structures to endure severe situation, like thermal stresses, high temperature gradients, irradiation, impacts by microscopic meteorites, and so on. In this part we are going to apply the FEM to analyze space parts with a coated layer subjected to a contact load thermo-mechanically. Coating layer is very thin in comparision with the structure, therefore it should take more times and behaviors to analyze whole model. In these reason we develop the FEM method of analyzing part with coated layer under contact load using partial model. Steady state temperature distribution of the part is obtained first, and then we apply quasi-static external load on the part. To obtain the final stage of solution, we compute the total solution, and by subtracting the thermal strain from the total ones we get the mechanical strains to compute stresses of the parts. In using the FEM, one has to discretize the model into many sub-domain, finite elements. The method is consisited of two steps. First step is to analyze the whole model with rather coarse meshes. Second step we cut a small region near the loading point, and analyze with very fine meshes. This method is allowable by the Saint-Venant's principle. And then, we finally shall check the therma1 load on the stresses of the space part with coating layer with or without substrate cracks. Then, we predict the actual behaviors of the part used in space.

In this report, we demonstrate that the longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance mode can be suppressed when the nanorods were in dumbbell shape. The seed nanorods were synthesized by electrochemical deposition of metals into the pores of anodic aluminum oxide templates. The dumbbell-like nanorods were grown from seed Au-Ni-Au nanorods by a rate-controlled seed-mediated growth strategy. The selective deposition of Au atoms onto Au blocks of Au-Ni-Au nanorods produced larger diameter of Au nanorods with bumpy surface resulting in dumbbell-like nanorods. The morphology of nanorods depended on the reduction rate of $AuCl_4^-$, slow rate producing smooth surface of Au nanorods, but high reduction rate producing bumpy surface morphology. Through systematic investigation into the UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy, we found that the multiple localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) modes were available from single-component Au nanorods. And, their LSPR modes of Au NRs with bumpy surface, compared to the smooth seed Au NRs, were red-shifted, which was obviously attributed to the increased electron oscillation pathways. While the longitudinal LSPR modes of smoothly grown Au NRs were blue-shifted except for a dipole transverse LSPR mode, which can be interpreted by decreased aspect ratio. In addition, dumbbell-like nanorods showed an almost disappeared longitudinal LSPR mode. It reflects that the plasmonic properties can be engineered using complex nanorods structure.
Much attention has been paid to the processing of inorganic whisker, especially calcium carbonate whisker, which can be used as reinforcement materials of polymer composite due to its low price. Unfortunately, the present synthesis technique of calcium carbonate whisker starts from calcinations of limestone, which involves high energy consumption and furthermore is a highly environment polluting reaction. In this report, needle-like aragonite was synthesized with a reversible solution reaction from limestone without calcination. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques were used to characterize the morphology and crystal structure of intermediates as well as that of the product, aragonite. GCC (grinding calcium carbonate) powder was dissolved in an aqueous solution of magnesium sulfate with reflux and air flush. EDTA titration was used to evaluate reaction rate of the dissolution. A kinetics equation of the dissolution reaction was constructed, which displayed second-order kinetics with respect to the concentration of magnesium sulfate. A rate constant of $0.0015\;l^{-3}{\cdot}mol^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$ was obtained. The dissolution reaction gave fiber-like magnesium hydroxide sulfate and gypsum crystal. Then needle-like aragonite with a length of $9.13\;{\pm}\;1.02\;{\mu}m$ and an aspect ratio of $5.64\;{\pm}\;1.37$ was synthesized from the dissolution product with $CO_2$ bubbling at $70^{\circ}C$.
Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) is developing an electric-driven HALE UAV in order to secure system and operational technologies since 2010. Based on the 5 years of flight tests and design experiences of the previously developed electric-driven UAVs, KARI has designed EAV-3, a solar-powered HALE UAV. EAV-3 weighs 53 kg, the structure weight is 21 kg, and features a flexible wing of 19.5 m in span with the aspect ratio of 17.4. Designing the main wing and empennage of the EAV-3 the amount of the bending due to the flexible wing, 404 mm at 1-G flight condition based on T-800 composite material, and side wind effects due to low cruise speed, V_cr = 6 m/sec, are carefully considered. Also, unlike the general aircraft there is no center of gravity shift during the flight. Thus, the static margin cuts down to 28.4% and center of gravity moves back to 31% of the Mean Aerodynamic Chord (MAC) comparing to the previously developed scale-down HALE UAVs, EAV-2 and EAV-2H, to minimize a trim drag and enhance a performance of the EAV-3. The first flight of the EAV-3 has successfully conducted on the July 29, 2015 and the test flight above the altitude 14 km has efficiently achieved on the August 5, 2015 at the Goheung aviation center.
The finite element analysis of a micro turbine was made to investigate safety margin of its operating condition for the high aspect ratio nickel micro turbine blades fabricated by conventional LIGA-like method. From our study, we found that the fabricated turbine could not exceed its yield strength even if the pressure difference between inlet and outlet of turbine blade was about 44kPa, and the correlation of friction coefficient and the maximum stress, caused by contact friction between outer diameter of shaft and inner diameter of turbine blade, was somewhat reciprocal. The maximum stress was decreased with the increasing contact friction, when turbine blade was in its state of rotation. By the results of our study, we conclude that it is possible to fabricate metal micro turbine more easily han surface micromachining technology and to operate with no risk of metal structure's damage, which is caused by yield strength, if the operating condition with the design of micro turbine itself are optimized. It is useful to adopt other applications which have the contact problems between a moving part and the fixed one in micro structures.
Synthesis of well-defined particle with tunable size, shape, and functionalities is strongly emphasized for various applications such as chemistry, biology, material science, chemical engineering, medicine, and biotechnology. This study presents micromolding method for the fabrication of anisotropic particles with elegant control of curvature of covex roof. For the demostration of rapid fabrication of the particles, we have applied polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) micromold as structure guiding template and wetting fluid to control curvature of roof of the particles. Based on this approach, we can control the radius of curvature from $20{\mu}m$ to $70{\mu}m$ with different aspect ratio of mold. In addition, wetting fluids with different wetting properties can also modulate the height and radius of curvature of the particles. We envision that this methodology is promising tool for precise control of particle shape in 3-dimensional space and new synthetic route for anisotropic particles with cost effective, simple, easy, and fast procedure.

The characteristics of copper thin films and via hole filling capability were investigated by pulsed electrodeposition method. Especially, the effects of additives on the properties of copper thin films were studied. Copper films, which were deposited by pulsed electrodeposition using commercial additives, had low tensile stress value under 83.4 MPa and high preferred Cu (111) texture. Via holes with $0.25{\mu}m$ in diameter and 6 : 1 aspect ratio were successfully filled without any defects by superfilling. It was observed that copper microstructure deformed by twining. After heat treatment at $500^{\circ}C$ for 1 k in vacuum furnace, grain size was 1 or 2 times as large as film thickness and the bamboo structure was formed. Heat treated copper films showed good resistivities of $1.8\~2.0{\mu}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$.

In this study, $Ar^+$ ion laser etching process of single/poly-crystalline Si with $CCl_2F_2$ gas is investigated for MEMS applications. In general, laser direct etching process is useful in microelectronic process, fabrication of micro sensors and actuators, rapid prototyping, and complementary processing because of the advantages of 3D micromachining, local etching/deposition process, and maskless process with high resolution. In this study, a pyrolytic method, in which $CCl_2F_2$ gasetches molten Si by the focused laser, was used. In order to analyze the temperature profile of Si by the focused laser, the 3D heat conduction equation was analytically solved. In order to investigate the process parameters dependence of etching characteristics, laser power, $CCl_2F_2$ gas pressure, and scanning speed were varied and the experimental results were observed by SEM. The aspect ratio was measured in multiple scanning and the simple 3D structure was fabricated. In addition, the etching characteristics of $6\mum$ thick poly-crystalline Si on the insulator was investigated to obtain flat bottom and vertical side wall for MEMS applications.
We measured mechanical properties, including Young's modulus, effective bending modulus and nominal fracture strength of nanohoneycomb structures using an Atomic Force Microscope(AFM) and a Nano-Universal Testing Machine(UTM). Anodic aluminum oxide(AAO) films are well suited as nanohoneycomb structures because of the simple fabrication process, high aspect ratio, self-ordered hexagonal pore structure, and simple control of pore dimensions. Bending tests were carried out for cantilever structures by pressing AFM tips, and the results were compared with three-point bending tests and tensile tests using a Nano-UTM. One side of the AAO films is clogged by harrier layers, and looks like a face material of conventional sandwich structures. Analysis of this layer showed that it did not influence the bending rigidity, and was just a crack tip. The present results can act as a design guideline in applications of nanohoneycomb structures.
