  • The extracts of Plocamium telfairiae using several solvents with different polarities were prepared and their growth inhibitory effects were examined on the human cancer cells. We investigated the cytotoxic effects of P. telfairiae extracts on HT-29 cells by the MTT reduction assay and examining the morphological change under the inverted microscope. Among three extracts, the methanol extract showed the strongest inhibitory effect on the growth of HT-29 cells. The methanol extract was further fractionated sequentially with n-hexane, diethyl ether, ethyl acetate, and aqueous for purifying crude methanol extract. The n-hexane layer among the fractioned layers showed remarkable inhibitory activity on the growth of HT-29 cells. Moreover n-hexane layer showed the notable growth inhibition effects with a dose-dependent manner against SW620, HeLa, and MCF-7 cells as well as HT-29 cells. These results indicated that P. telfairiae extracts may be contained bioactive materials with inhibitory effect on the growth of human cancer cells.

  • The physiological characteristics of kiwi (Actinidia delicosa) fruit were analyzed, which inclued its nutritional composition, in vitro-antioxidant activities, and neuronal cell protective effects. The most abundant components of mineral, amino acid, and fatty acid were found to be potassium (K), glutamic acid, and a-linolenic acid, respectively. The major free sugars were fructose, glucose, and sucrose. In addition, ${\beta}$-carotene and vitamin C contents were $1.35{\mu}g/100mL$ and 29.21 mg/100 g, respectively. The 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenothiazline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical-scavenging activity of the n-hexane fraction obtained from the kiwi extract was 10.52% at a concentration of $1000{\mu}g/mL$. The malondialdehyde (MDA) inhibition of the n-hexane fraction was found to increased in a dose-dependent manner. The intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation after hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) treatment of PC12 cells was significantly reduced in the presence of the n-hexane fraction compared to PC12 cells treated with $H_2O_2$ only. Moreover, in the a MTT assay, the n-hexane fraction showed in vitro-protective effects against $H_2O_2$-induced neurotoxicity.

  • This study was designed to examine the in vitro antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of red beet (Beta vulagaris) root. Red beet root was extracted using 70% ethanol and then fractionated sequentially with n-hexane, ethyl acetate and butanol. Antioxidative ability was evaluated by bioassays using total polyphenol contents and ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid diammonium salt) radical scavenging activity. Ethyl acetate fraction of red beet root was best on total polyphenol contents ($37.02{\pm}0.37mg\;GAE/g$) and ABTS radical scavenging effects ($IC_{50}$ $42.9{\pm}9.5{\mu}g/mL$). For the anti-inflammatory activity in RAW264.7 cells, the hexane fraction showed the highest inflammatory effect. Dose response studies were performed to determine the inhibitory effect of hexane fraction of red beet root on pro-inflammatory mediators in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. The hexane fraction of red beet root inhibited the NO and $PGE_2$ production and the protein level of iNOS and COX-2, and protein expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines ($TNF-{\alpha}$, IL-6 and $IL-1{\beta}$), in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that red beet root has considerable potential as a functional food ingredient with antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects.

  • The analgesic and the antipyretic activity of the methanol, chloroform, hexane and acetonitrile extracts of the aerial parts of Stachys schimperi Vatke were investigated in mice. The nociceptive response was tested using acetic acid-induced writhing and tail flick method; while hypothermia affect was examined via yeast-induced fever test. The chloroform extract at 500 mg and hexane and acetonitrile extracts at 250 mg produced significant analgesic and antipyretic activity.

  • The ether extract of Dang-Gui, the dried root of Angelica gigas N$_{AKAI}$, was placed into a column with aluminium oxide gel. The elution of it with a mixture of n-hexane and ethyl acetate afforded Nodakenetin (I) and the elution with a mixture of n-hexane, ethyl acetate, acetone and methyl alcohol yielded Umbelliferon (II) and Nodakenin (III). Three coumarin derivatives were identified by comparing with authentic samples. The existence of sucrose and glucose was also proved.

  • In the present study Momordica dioica fruit pulp was successively extracted with hexane and methanol. To the concentrated methanolic extract ethyl acetate was added and ethyl acetate soluble portion was separated. Both hexane extract (HE) and ethyl acetate soluble portion (EASP) of methanolic extract was vacuum dried to yield the respective HE and EASP. HE and EASP were evaluated for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities in a dose of 50 and 100 mg/kg in mice and rats. Both HE and EASP significant exhibited analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities when compare to standard drug.

  • Solanesol has been isolated from aged Korean native tobacco leaf(Hyangcho and Sohyang) by water pretreatment, hexane extraction and column chromatography on Florisil in yields of 0.41% and 0.31% dry wt., respectively. Thin-layer densitometric analysis of the hexane extracts of samples(Hyangcho Sohyang) has shown that the amounts of solanesol present are 0.74% and 0.52% dry wt., respectively.

  • A separation/purification process for enzymatic sugar ester production was investigated The crude reaction mixture contained sugar ester and unreacted fatty acid in acetone. The reaction mixture was mixed with KOH/phosphate buffer. Hexane was then added to enhance phase separation. Three phases formed: a lower aqueous phase containing nothing of interest, a polar organic solvent middle phase that contained mostly fatty acid soaps, and a hexane-rich upper phase that contained mostly sugar ester. Distribution coefficient of each component was measured.
