  • The inhibitory effects of Gleditschiae Spina, Cleditschia saponin, two complex prescriptions such as Takrisodokum and Kwaluubangtang, which contain Gleditschiae Spina, and their altered prescriptions on the activity of cyclooxygenase in vitro were investigated. The water extract of Gleditschiae Spina and Gleditschia saponin markedly inhibited the cyclo-oxygenase activity by 59% and 67%, respectively, at a concentration of $1mg/m{\ell}$, on the other hand, Takrisodokum and Kwaluubangtang showed 15% and 7% inhibition, respectively. The extracts with the substraction of Gleditschiae Spina and/or Platycodi Radix inhibited to a much smaller extent than Takrisodokum. However, in case of the extracts with the substraction of Gleditschiae Spina and/or Trichosanthis Semen, only one prescription, which does not contain Trichosanthis Semen, exhibited the same inhibition as Takrisodokum. From above results, Gleditschiae Spina was found to be most important for the effect of Takrisodokum and Kwaluubangtang on their antiinflammatory action. Instead of Gleditschiae Spina, another parts of this plant were added to both complex prescriptions and tested according to above methods, indicating that Gleditschiae Spina is more important than another parts for both prescriptions. When the administered dose of Gleditschiae Spina is increased(twofold and threefold) in both complex prescriptions, the inhibitory effect in Takrisodokum was diminished. however, the effect in Kwaluubangtang was increased.

  • The purpose of this study is to prepare black ginseng and evaluate its antitumor activity. In order to achieve such aim, 5 year fresh ginsenges were steamed at 95'E for 3 hr in pottery apparatus and dried at $60^{\circ}C$ for 12-36 hr. This process was repeated again nine times in same condition. Among the ginseng saponins in black ginseng, the amount of Ginsenoside $Rg_3$ was examined by HPLC. 10.05 mE of Ginsenoside $Rg_3$ was obtained from 1 g of dried black ginseng prepared. The extract of black ginseng exhibited stronger cytotoxic activity against MCF-1, HT-1080 and Hepa 1C1C7 tumor cell lines in vitro than the extract of red ginseng. Also, the extract of black ginseng exhibited stronger antitumor activity(33%) in BDFl mice bearing Lewis lung carcinoma cells(LLC) than the extract of red ginseng(23%). From these results, it was concluded that Black ginseng had antitumor activity suggesting its application for the prevention and treatment of cancer.

  • For the purpose of developing Korean Herbalogy with the plants of Urticaceae which grow wild and is planted in Korea, the these and writings on herbalogy, from literature of successive generations, have been thoroughly investigative and the results obtained were as follows: 1. There were totaled 11 genera and 44 species in Korea and among them medecinal plants are 9 genera, 19 species, some 43% in total but the number of species may be added because of similar plants. 2. According to the oriental name which can be used for medical purpose, the medicinal plants beloning to the Urticaceae were classified as Herba 10, Radix 8, Folium 3, Cortex 1, Flos 1, Rhizoma 1. Thus it was noticed that Herba was the main kind. 3. According to sum of 44 species in Urticaceae they were classified into Boehemeria genera 18, Urtica genera 9, Pliea genera 5, Elastosma genera 3, Parietaria genera 2, Pellionia genera 2, Achudemia 1, Debregeasia genera 1, Girardinia genera 1, Laportea genera 1, Nanocnide genera 1 etc. Thus it was noticed that Boehemeria genera was the main kind, some 41% in total. 4. According to nature and flavour of medicinal plants, they were classified into cold, cool; 6 each, wormth, heat; 4 each, balance 3. Thus it was noticed that cold and cool is the main in nature and flavour of medicinal plants. 5. According to the Properties and Principal Curative action, they were classified into, clearing up heat and toxin 9, drugs for urination an removing abscess 7, drugs for circulating blood and hemostasis 7, drugs for expelling wind 5, drugs for comporting embryo 4, 6. Comparing to whole medicinal plants 44 kinds, toxic durgs include minor toxin were 2 kinds, 5% of the whole. Thus toxic durgs were rare. From this result, It was revealed that the plants for medical purpose in Urticaceae was 43% kinds of the whole, in which Herba was mostly abundunt, toxic plants were so rare that it will be used for clinical treatments more easily. It is considered that many clinical experiments and approaches must be continued to use widely.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate cytotoxic effects of the roots of Sophora flavescens Ait. extracts on murine leukemia tumor cells lines $(P388D_1\;and\;L1210)$. Disruptions in cell organelles were determined by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The comparison of $IC_{50}$ values of the ethyl acetate of Sophora flavescens Ait. extract in leukemia cell lines showed that their susceptibility to these extracts decreased in the following order : Adriamycin>Fr.4>Fr.5>Fr.3>Fr.1>Fr.2 by the MTT assay. These results suggest that the fraction 4 of the ethyl acetate soluble extract of Sophora flavescens Ait. may be a valuable choice for the studies on the treatment of murine leukemia cell lines.

  • Qi. in ancient east Asian Philosophy and medicine, was the quintessential concept symbolizing material orgin of the world. It was considered as the original matter of the world, and the genesis, development and extinction of everything in heaven and earth was explained through the movement of Qi. Despite its importance, the interpretation of Qi has brought about various bifurcations in the history of Oriental medicine. It is comprehended either as ideal concept, or as actual entity. Also, there exists synthetic idea of considering both sides of Qi. These ideas results from obscure understanding based on textual interpretation apart from actual experince. When experincing Qi through discipline, however, man can understand Qi concretly and actually and even grasp the explanation of the cosmos and life. One problem of Qi discipline was that it couldn't ascend the stage of subjective experience. Now, with the method of 'Hanalmomjit'. a developed form of zifadonggong(自發動功), I could reach coherent results to offer the foundation of objective understanding of Qi. The testees, disciples of Hanalmomjit, could express the characters of herbs in their Qigong actions, and the expression was meaningful and coherent to be considered as expressing the effects described in the classics of herbalogy. This result comes from the capacity of grasping external Qi-status, not only expressing the internal communication of jingluo(經絡) in Hanalmomjit.

  • Samhwaja-hyangyakbang has been known as the book of herbalogy published by the man, Samhwaja. But there are no records about the additor, and the absence of the document, it is so difficult to be informed about the time when it published and other details. But in this document and Hyangyakgugeubbang, there are similar prescriptions to Sublingual Inflammation, Aphtose, Anthrax, Furoncle, Ulcer, Dysentery, etc. So the time it published is estimated to Goryo-dynasty Gojong epoch(1232-1251) when the Hyangyakgugeubbang was published. In addition, this document seems to be basis of Hyangyakjipseongbang, Because, Hyangyakjipseongbang quoted more than 140 provisions from this document. Prescriptions that are different from other books in dosage or taking method, took those of Biyebaekyobang. In explanation or classification of disease, this document almost copied those of Biyebaekyobang, so this document take Biyebaekyobang for origin and take Sikeuisimkam, Taepyungseonghyebang, etc, for reference.
