A hemispherical asperity moving over a flat plane is simulated based on classical molecular dynamics. The asperity and the plane consist of silicon atoms whose interactions are governed by the Tersoff three-body potential. The gap between the asperity and the plane is maintained to produce attractive normal force in order to investigate the adhesive friction and wear. The simulation focuses on the influence of crystallographic orientation of the contacting surfaces and the moving direction. It is demonstrated that the adhesive friction and wear are lower when crystallographic orientations of the contacting surfaces are different, and also depend on the moving direction relative to the crystal1ographic orientation.

The axisymmetric bodies considered in this study have hemispherical and ellipsoidal noses. The near-field pressure fluctuations over each nose model at $Re_D=2.43{\times}10^5$ were investigated in the laminar separation region and developing turbulent boundary layers using a 1/8' pin-holed microphone sensor. The wall pressure fluctuations were also measured in an axisymmetric boundary layer on a cylinder parallel to mean flow at a momentum thickness Reynolds number of 850 and a boundary layer thickness to cylinder radius ratio of 1.88.

Experimental studies were conducted on the liquid sloshing characteristics in a spherical tank covered with a flexible membrane. A spherical acrylic tank with 145.2 mm in radius was used as a test tank, and it was half-filled with water. Silicon membranes with 0.2 mm thickness were used as a test membrane with plane or hemispherical types. The test tank was harmonically excited in a vertical direction by an electro-dynamic exciter. In this case, a parametric instability vibration comes up when the excitation frequency is twice the natural frequency. Parametric instability regions of natural modes were measured for three cases, i.e. liquid surface is free, covered with plane membrane and hemi-spherical membrane.
A building and the solar are related to the privilege of solar benefit. To make step, it is required to build up an object, chase the position of object and the solar, find the shadow occurrence. On the subject of direct illuminance, an intensive emission of irradiation is proposed to directly project to the benefit area. Simultaneously on the indirect illuminance, the integration of a finite element incident to the benefit area can be multiplied by the hemisphere luminance. A caution should be paid to eliminate the occupation area of the object around on the hemispherical sky, which can help run more accurate prediction.

Cavitating flow simulation is of practical importance for many engineering systems, such as marine propellers, pump impellers, nozzles, torpedoes, etc. The present work has developed the base code to solve the cavitating flows past the axisymmetric bodies with several forebody shapes. The governing equation is the Navier-Stokes equation based on homogeneous mixture model. The momentum is in the mixture phase while the continuity equation is solved in liquid and vapor phase, separately. The solver employs an implicit preconditioning algorithm in curvilinear coordinates. The computations have been carried out for the cylinders with hemispherical, 1-caliber, and 0-caliber forebody and, then, compared with experiments and other numerical results. Fairly good agreements with experiments and numerical results have been achieved. It has been concluded that the present numerical code has successfully accounted for the cavitating flows past axisymmetric bodies. The present code has also shown the capability to simulate ventilated cavitation.

This paper presents the experimental results related to soil ionization and electrical breakdown in a concentric hemispherical electrode system under lightning impulse voltages. Dynamic voltage-current and impedance-time characteristics of soil ionization were measured and analyzed. Also the electrical breakdowns of the soil gap were investigated. The time-lag to the peak current corresponds to the soil ionization propagation. The time of ionization propagation in wet sand is found to decrease with increasing the impulse currents. A drastic decrease in ground resistance was observed during the impulse current spreading in sand. The electrical breakdown appears at the wave tail of impulse voltage and results in a wide scatter in V-t curves. The voltage-current curves have a fan-like shape attributed to ionization processes which result in increasing current and decreasing voltage.
Previous counter-current flow limitation (CCFL) and critical heat flux (CHF) studies included investigations on the inlet entrance, inclined channel and gap effects for the most part. In this study, the local CHF correlation was presented to be used in the numerical analysis for the 3 dimensional hemispherical geometry. Also, first-principle analyses were performed to determine the Maximum heat removal capability from the debris through the gap that may be formed during a core melt accident. The maximum heat removal capability by gap cooling can be applied in quantitatively assessing the severe accident management measures.
This paper deals with the computational modeling of buoyancy-driven turbulent heat transfer involving spatially uniform volumetric heat sources in semicircular geometry. The Launder & Sharma low-Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model without any modifications and the SIMPLER computational algorithm were used for the numerical modeling, which was incorporated into the new computer code CORE-TNC. This computer code was subsequently benchmarked with the Mini-ACOPO experimental data in the modified Rayleigh number range of 2$\times$10$^{13}$$\times$10$^{14}$ . The general trends of the velocity and temperature fields were well predicted by the model used, and the calculated isotherm patterns were found to be very similiar to those observed in previous experimental investigations. The deviation between the Mini-ACOPO experimental data and the corresponding numerical results obtained with CORE-TNC for the average Nusselt number was less than 30% using fine grid in the near-wall region and the three-point difference formula for the wall temperature gradient. With isothermal pool boundaries, heat was convected predominantly to the upper and adjacent lateral surfaces, and the bottom surface received smaller heat fluxes.
Papilloma of the upper respiratory tract, particularly larynx and vocal cords are relatively common disease. However, solitary papilloma of the bronchus is extremely rare condition and only a handful cases were reported in the literature. The patient is a 39 year old housewife who has been suffering from productive cough and occasional hemoptysis in the past one year. X-ray of the chest showed complete atelectasis of the right upper lobe. Bronchography revealed a hemispherical protruding mass in the right main bronchus with complete occlusion of the upper lobe bronchus. Bronchoscopy showed a whitish friable mass in the lumen of the right main bronchus biopsy of which was reported as benign papilloma. Right upper lobectomy together with wedge resection of the portion of right main bronchus to include the tumor was done. Cut-edges of the bronchus were stitched together with interrupted fine dacron sutures. During this procedure, right main bronchus was gently clamped with non-crushing Satinsky type clamp. Patient has had uneventful recovery from surgery and was discharged without symptom. Patientis doing well three months following the operation.
