Recently, various applications for LED lightings are growing continuously due to their better performances such as low power consumption, longer life time, operation speed, controllability, high quality color rendering, and sustainability. However, in developing the high-powered LEDs illumination system, heat-sink problem is one of the important obstacle. In this paper, a heat-sink design with multi-layered structure for high-powered LEDs is proposed, which is composed of metal core PCB, heat-pipes, heat-sink plates, and fans. And also, in this paper, a design for LED controls using DMX512 protocols through RS-485 communications is proposed, which is considered as de facto international standard in LEDs illumination control and is widely used in landscape lighting and stage lighting. In this paper, LED control and its application techniques are introduced and the method of wireless remote control for main controller is proposed.
When a KW-class power control unit is installed in an aircraft installation, a heat dissipation design for a large amount of heat generated during power conversion should be considered. Failure to provide adequate heat dissipation can lead to equipment malfunction and fire, which can be a fatal factor in aviation operations. This paper describes the heat dissipation design of a KW-class power control unit installed in aircraft installation. The design and manufacturing test were conducted through computerized analysis, and the analysis model was corrected by confirming the rapid heat generation phenomenon of the heating element due to high power control. After the model revision, the design was improved, and the high-temperature operation test of the US military standard MIL-STD-810G was performed to confirm the feasibility of the improved design.

Thermal performance of pipe network of continuous heating system controlled by thermostat and flow control valve was simulated in consideration of radiation heat transfer and solved by linear analysis method. Thermal performance of real apartment building with radiant floor heating system was simulated by equivalence heat resistance-capacity method. This method enables to simulate the unsteady variation of temperature or each element of building. Heat transfer characteristics of each element were also investigated.

Optimal design of an air-to-liquid finned plate heat exchanger is considered theoretically in this study. Based on existing correlations for the pressure loss and the heat transfer in channel flows, the optimal configuration of the plate heat exchanger including the optimal plate pitch and the optimal fin pitch is obtained to maximize the heat transfer within the limit of the pressure drop for a given flow depth of the plate heat exchanger. It is found that the optimal fin pitch is about one ninth of the optimal plate pitch. In the optimal configuration, the flow and thermal condition in the channels is just at the boundary between the laminar developing and laminar fully developed states. It is also found when reducing the flow depth of plate heat exchangers for compactness, the heat transfer performance can be maintained exactly the same if the geometric parameters such as the plate thickness, plate pitch, fin thickness, and fin pitch are reduced proportional to the square root of the flow depth as long as the flow keeps laminar within the heat exchangers.
Alternative control schemes for an Advanced High Temperature Reactor system consisting of a reactor, an intermediate heat exchanger, and a secondary heat exchanger (SHX) are presented in this paper. One scheme is designed to control the cold outlet temperature of the SHX ($T_{co}$) and the hot outlet temperature of the intermediate heat exchanger ($T_{ho2}$) by manipulating the hot-side flow rates of the heat exchangers ($F_h/F_{h2}$) responding to the flow rate and temperature disturbances. The flow rate disturbances typically require a larger manipulation of the flow rates than temperature disturbances. An alternate strategy examines the control of the cold outlet temperature of the SHX ($T_{co}$) only, since this temperature provides the driving force for energy production in the power conversion unit or the process application. The control can be achieved by three options: (1) flow rate manipulation; (2) reactor power manipulation; or (3) a combination of the two. The first option has a quicker response but requires a large flow rate change. The second option is the slowest but does not involve any change in the flow rates of streams. The third option appears preferable as it has an intermediate response time and requires only a minimal flow rate change.

An adaptive predictive level control of waste heat steam boiler was studied by using mathematical models considering the inverse response. The simulation experiments of the model identification were performed by using linear and bilinear models. From the results of simulations it was found that the bilinear model represented the actual dynamic behavior of steam boiler very well. ARMA model was used in the model identification and the adaptive predictive controller. To verify the performance and effectiveness of the adaptive predictive controller used in this study the simulation results of the adaptive predictive level control for waste heat steam boiler based on bilinear model were compared to those of P, PI and PID controller. The results of simulations showed that the adaptive predictive controller provides the fast arrival to setpoint of liquid level.

In this paper, a temperature control for LED(Light Emitting Diode) lamp using a cooling fan is studied. An efficient temperature control scheme for the LED lamp using the fan wind at the lowest sound noise is studied. For the study, after measurement of the minimum sound noise of the fan and related temperature of the LED lamp through tests, experiments on temperature control of the LED lamp using the fan with various size of heat sinks was performed. To minimize the fan sound noise, optimal size of the heat sink was studied. Also, a teleoperting control of LED lamps using RF communication was studied.
Four early-fattening Hanwoo steers weighing $247{\pm}13.5kg$ were used within a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design to establish a nutrient requirement for maintenance and to investigate nutritional changes in the steers under heat stress condition. The steers were fed four different energy level diets: 100% (control) and 100%, 115% and 130% of total digestible nutrients (TDN) requirement of the early-fattening Hanwoo steers for maintenance based on the Korean Feeding Standard for Hanwoo. The steers in the control were housed with no stress (temperature $24^{\circ}C$ and humidity 60%), whereas the steers in the other groups were under heat stress (temperature $30^{\circ}C$ and humidity 70%). True digestibilities of dry matter (DM) and other nutrients were not significantly (p > 0.05) affected by heat stress (i.e., control vs T100). This may be the result of a lower DM intake than that of the Korean feeding standard due to the establishment of the nutrients requirement under heat stress. Heat stress and different energy intake levels did not affect the blood metabolite concentrations. Average daily gain (ADG) for T100 (-69.6 g) was lower than that of the control (-44.6 g, numerically), T115 (44.6 g, p < 0.05) and T130 (83.3 g, p < 0.05), respectively. Based on the ADG and TDN intake, the equation (Y = 0.1814X + 111.5) for the TDN requirement of the early fattening Hanwoo steers for maintenance was calculated, indicating that 11.5% of TDN requirement for maintenance under heat stress may be additionally supplied.
When NIH3T3 cells were exposed to mild heat and recovered at $37^{\circ}C$ for various time intervals, they were thermotolerant and resistant to subsequent stresses including heat, oxidative stresses, and antitumor drug methotrexate which are apoptotic inducers. The induction kinetics of apoptosis by stresses were determined by DNA fragmentation and protein synthesis using $[35^S]$methionine pulse labeling. We investigated the hypothesis that thermotolerant cells were resistant to apoptotic cell death compared to control cells when both cells were exposed to various stresses inducing apoptosis. The cellular changes in thermotolerant cells were examined to determine which components are involved in this resistance. At first, the degree of resistance correlates with the extent of heat shock protein synthesis which were varied depending on the heating times at $45^{\circ}C$ and recovery times at $37^{\circ}C$after heat shock. Secondly, membrane permeability change was observed in thermotolerant cells. When cells prelabeled with $[^{3}H]$thymidine were exposed to various amounts of heat and recovered at $37^{\circ}C$ for 1/2 to 24 h, the permeability of cytosolic $[^{3}H]$thymidine in thermotolerant cells was 4 fold higher than that in control cells. Thirdly, the protein synthesis rates in thermotolerant and control cells were measured after exposing the cells to the same extent of stress. It turned out that thermotolerant cells were less damaged to same amount of stress than control cells, although the recovery rates are very similar to each other. These results demonstrate that an increase of heat shock proteins and membrane changes in thermotolerant cells may protect the cells from the stresses and increase the resistance to apoptotic cell death, even though the exact mechanism should be further studied.

A preliminary performance test of a 30RT 2-stage screw heat pump was carried out in order to develop a high performance large-scale unutilized energy source heat pump system, which will be used for district heating and cooling. In this study, two issues of the system operating control were investigated. The first issue is the mode switching control from 1-stage to 2-stage. A stable 2-stage heating operation is guaranteed, only if the load-side water inlet temperature is over a certain value, where the 1-stage heating operation should be done first from a cold start. The second issue is oil level control. An oil shortage problem in the low stage compressor, which depends on the degree of suction superheat, was solved by a proper oil level control scheme.
