  • Introduction : Head trauma is the main cause of death in aircraft crash. In a Michigan study of structurally survivable, fatal accidents, 80% of the fatally injured had received head trauma. We tried to develop a new helmet for passengers, and perform its efficiency test. Methods : An aircraft helmet requires an excellent protection against head trauma, lightness, and small volumes. In addition, it must be wearable, fire resistant, and non toxic when it is burning. We developed two new helmets made from silicone foam which met all theses requirements. One was thin (2.5cm), and the other was thick (6.3cm). These looked like a motorcycle helmet and had only a soft silicone as liner material without an outer hard shell. Therefore we can carry them easily inside aircrafts. The standard test for helmet is Snell's drop test. It measures the impact acceleration of head shaped metal wearing helmet during we drop it at certain heights. Impact sites were total 5 sites (front, back, right, left and top) for each helmet. All these sites were impacted twice. Results : The thickness of impact sites varied from 2.5cm to 6.3cm. The impact acceleration of 2.5cm thickness site when it was dropped from 1.0 meter was 379g. But, that of 6.3cm thickness site when it was dropped from 1.5 meter was only 163g. Unfortunately, both helmets didn't meet the Snell Standard for motorcycle helmets. Discussion : If we add suitable outer hard shell, and change its thickness and design, the efficiency will be increased. A study indicated that helmet could reduce the risk of head trauma up to 85%. We made helmet for passengers in aircraft crash for the first time. If we improve its weak points, it will decrease the frequency of head trauma in aircraft craft.

  • For further scaling down of the silicon devices, the application of low dielectric constant materials instead of silicon oxide has been considered to reduce power consumption, crosstalk, and interconnection delay. In this paper, the effect of $O_2/SF_6$ plasma chemistry on the etching characteristics of polyimide-one of the promising low-k interlayer dielectrics-has been studied. The etch rate of polyimide decreases with the addition of $SF_6$ gas due to formation of nonvolatile fluorine compounds inhibiting reaction between oxygen and hydrocarbon polymer, while applying substrate bias enhances etching process through physical attack. However, addition of small amount of $SF_6$ is desirable for etching topography. $SiO_2$ hard mask for polyimide etching is effective under $O_2$plasma etching(selectivity~30), while $O_2/SF_6$ chemistry degrades etching selectivity down to 4. Based on the above results, $1-2\mu\textrm{m}$ L&S PI2610 patterns were successfully etched.

  • Zirconium boride is an artificial or which is rarely found in the nature. $ZrB_2$ is popular in the hard material industry because it has a high melting point, excellent mechanical properties and chemical stability. There are two known methods to synthesize $ZrB_2$. The first involves direct reaction between Zr and B, and the second is by reduction of the metal halogen. However, these two methods are known to be unsuitable for mass production. SHS(Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis) is an efficient and economic method for synthesizing hard materials because it uses exothermic reactions. In this study, $ZrB_2$ was successfully synthesized by subjecting $ZrO_2$, Mg and $B_2O_3$ to SHS. Because of the high combustion temperature and rapid combustion, in conjunction with the stoichiometric ratio of $ZrO_2$, Mg and $B_2O_3$; single phase $ZrB_2$ was not synthesized. In order to solve the temperature problem, Mg and NaCl additives were investigated as diluents. From the experiments it was found that both diluents effectively stabilized the reaction and combustion regime. The final product, made under optimum conditions, was single-phase $ZrB_2$ of $0.1-0.9{\mu}m$ particle size.

  • Cobalt (Co) is mainly used to prepare cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and binder metals for WC-Co hard metals. Developing an effective method for recovering Co from WC-Co waste sludge is of immense significance. In this study, Co is extracted from waste cemented carbide soft scrap via mechanochemical milling. The leaching ratio of Co reaches approximately 93%, and the leached solution, from which impurities except nickel are removed by pH titration, exhibits a purity of approximately 97%. The titrated aqueous Co salts are precipitated using oxalic acid and hydroxide precipitation, and the effects of the precipitating agent (oxalic acid and hydroxide) on the cobalt microstructure are investigated. It is confirmed that the type of Co compound and the crystal growth direction change according to the precipitation method, both of which affect the microstructure of the cobalt powders. This novel mechanochemical process is of significant importance for the recovery of Co from waste WC-Co hard metal. The recycled Co can be applied as a cemented carbide binder or a cathode material for lithium secondary batteries.

  • We investigated metal concentrations and oceanic environment changes that have occurred over the past several years by studying the hard coral Porites lutea, which inhabits tropical and subtropical areas. Soft X-radiographs clearly showed distinctive annual bands within 71 mm coral sample, which reflect changes in the oceanic environment over this period. There were large fluctuations in the major and minor element concentrations. Considering the physicochemical partition coefficient, some elements accumulated in the aragonite matrix in a mechanical manner, while others were affected by environmental factors. The concentrations of some heavy metals varied over a wide range, implying local environmental effects. The variation of Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca in coral skeleton clearly showed large-scale fluctuation over the specific intervals, implying environmental changes during this period. The concentrations of heavy metals also show high fluctuations, and roughly accord with Mg/Ca variation. In addition, Cu and Zn seem to show cyclicity-like peaks, coincide with Mg/Ca variation over the specific intervals. Such variation might be related to local pollution and oceanographic changes. More detailed investigation is necessary, including the pretreatment of coral skeleton sediment.

  • Metal three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies are mainly classified as powder bed fusion (PBF) and direct energy deposition (DED) methods according to the method of application of a laser beam to metallic powder. The DED method can be used to fabricate fine and hard 3D metallic structures by applying a strong laser beam to a thin layer of metallic powder. The PBF method involves slicing 3D graphics to be a certain height, laminating metal powders, and making a 3D structure using a laser. While the DED method has advantages such as laser cladding and metallic welding, it causes problems with low density when 3D shapes are created. The PBF method was introduced to address the structural density issues in the DED method and makes it easier to produce relatively dense 3D structures. In this paper, thin lines were produced by using PBF 3D printers with stainless-steel powder of roughly $30{\mu}m$ in diameter with a galvano scanner and fiber-transferred Nd:YAG laser beam. Experiments were carried out to find the optimal conditions for the width of a line depending on the processing times, laser power, spot size, and scan speed. The optimal conditions were two scanning processes in one line structure with a laser power of 30 W, spot size of $28.7{\mu}m$, and scan speed of 200 mm/s. With these conditions, a minimum width of about $85.3{\mu}m$ was obtained.

  • Pseudo-first-order rate constants ($k_{obsd}$) have been measured spectrophotometrically for nucleophilic substitution reactions of 3,4-dinitrophenyl diphenylphosphinothioate 9 with alkali metal ethoxides (EtOM, M = Li, Na, K) in anhydrous ethanol at $25.0{\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$. The plot of $k_{obsd}$ vs. [EtOM] is linear for the reaction of 9 with EtOK. However, the plot curves downwardly for those with EtOLi and EtONa while it curves upwardly for the one with EtOK in the presence of 18-crown-6-ether (18C6). Dissection of $k_{obsd}$ into $k_{EtO^-}$ and $k_{EtOM}$ (i.e., the second-order rate constant for the reaction with dissociated $EtO^-$ and ion-paired EtOM, respectively) has revealed that the reactivity increases in the order $k_{EtOLi}$ < $k_{EtONa}$ < $k_{EtO^-}$ ${\approx}$ $k_{EtOK}$ < $k_{EtOK/18C6}$, indicating that the reaction is inhibited by $Li^+$ and $Na^+$ ions but is catalyzed by 18C6-crowned $K^+$ ion. The reactivity order found for the reactions of 9 contrasts to that reported previously for the corresponding reactions of 1, i.e., $k_{EtOLi}$ > $k_{EtONa}$ > $E_{EtOK}$ > $k_{EtO^-}$ ${\approx}$ $k_{EtOK/18C6}$, indicating that the effect of changing the electrophilic center from P=O to P=S on the role of $M^+$ ions is significant. A four-membered cyclic transition-state has been proposed to account for the $M^+$ ion effects found in this study, e.g., the polarizable sulfur atom of the P=S bond in 9 interacts strongly with the soft 18C6-crowned $K^+$ ion while it interacts weakly with the hard $Li^+$ and $Na^+$ ions.

  • Recently, all the electrical parts for satellite application are required more strong against cosmic rays, because spacecraft's life time and function are depending on the their conditions. Also, a TID effect test was undertaken with units and/or subsystems which are already assembled on the PCB in past time. However, it is very hard to know and analyze that some abnormal states are appeared after launch. Moreover, it is necessary to perform a test of TID effects based on the parts level for preparing preliminary data in cosmic rays. Therefore, this paper presents a test-bed to perform a TID effect test of Metal-Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET) which is a fundamental element for electronics.

  • Characteristics of dissimilar metal welds between STS 316L and carbon steel ASTM A516 Gr.70 made with GTAW have been evaluated in terms of microstructure, ferrite content, chemical analysis, hardness and corrosion resistance. Three heat inputs of 9.00, 11.25, 13.00kJ/cm were employed to make joints of dissimilar metals with ER309 wire. Based on microstructural examination, the amount of vermicular type of ${\delta}$-ferrite was increased with increasing heat input due to the increase of Creq/Nieq in the second layer of welds. Based on the EDX analysis of weld metals, Cr and Ni content in the 2nd layer increased while those content in the first layer of welds decreased with heat inputs. Cellular solidification mode in the 1st layer and dendritic solidification mode in the 2nd layer due to different cooling rates were prevailed, respectively. Heat affected zone which formed hard microstructure showed higher hardness than the weld metal. The salt spray test of dissimilar metals weld joints showed that the carbon steel surfaces only corroded. The weight loss rate due to corrosion increased up to 100hours but it decreased above 100 hours. There was little difference in the weight loss caused by corrosion regardless of heat inputs.

  • For analyzing resources demand appropriately, corresponding demand data is essential. But it is hard to get the suitable data of each resource demand, because every resources has various type as refined and many kind of alloyed. That reason makes many analyses to employ the data of refined metals as the representative quantity. But those refined metals are factors for producing final goods so those in domestic market are not always meant for producing domestic end goods. Thus in this paper, the domestic demands of refined copper, lead and zinc are analyzed empirically with 'intensity of use' and foreign countries' income variable applied model for recovering the data availability.
