  • Automatic emotion recognition based on facial cues, such as facial action units (AUs), has received huge attention in the last decade due to its wide variety of applications. Current computer-based automated two-phase facial emotion recognition procedures first detect AUs from input images and then infer target emotions from the detected AUs. However, more robust AU detection and AU-to-emotion mapping methods are required to deal with the error accumulation problem inherent in the multiphase scheme. Motivated by our key observation that a single AU detector does not perform equally well for all AUs, we propose a novel two-phase facial emotion recognition framework, where the presence of AUs is detected by group decisions of multiple AU detectors and a target emotion is inferred from the combined AU detection decisions. Our emotion recognition framework consists of three major components - multiple AU detection, AU detection fusion, and AU-to-emotion mapping. The experimental results on two real-world face databases demonstrate an improved performance over the previous two-phase method using a single AU detector in terms of both AU detection accuracy and correct emotion recognition rate.

  • Structural analyses of oligosaccharide-malononitrile derivatives were conducted by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization post-source decay (MALDI-PSD) analysis in positive ion mode. The malononitrile derivatives of oligosaccharides, which were developed for highly sensitive detection of multi-component oligosaccharides by negative ion electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI MS), were detected by positive-ion MALDI with the detection limit of 2 pmol level from the crude derivatization sample. The used matrix affected drastically the analytical results of oligosaccharide-malononitrile derivative by matrix-assisted laser desoprtion/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI MS). The malononitrile derivatization of oligosaccharide also affect the patterns of MALDI-PSD spectra and give much more structural information than the free oligosaccharide.

  • In this paper, we propose a new fast algorithm for effective scene change detection. The proposed algorithm exploits Otsu threshold matching technique, which was proposed earlier. In this method, the current and the reference frames are divided into square blocks of particular size. After doing so, the pixel histogram of each block is generated. According to Otsu method, every histogram distribution is assumed to be bimodal, i.e. pixel distribution can be divided into two groups, based on within-group variance value. The pixel value that minimizes the within-group variance is said to be Otsu threshold. After Otsu threshold is found, the same procedure is performed at the reference frame. If the difference between Otsu threshold of a block in the current frame and co-located block in the reference frame is larger than predefined threshold, then a scene change between those two blocks is detected.

  • This study is to develop the Alzheimers disease (AD) detection and analysis system using event-related potential (ERP) of AD patients. We recorded ERP in an auditory oddball paradigm in mild AD (n=25), severe AD (n=12), age-matched normal aged controls (n=17), and young controls (n=7). The amplitude and latency of target P300 components were compared among 4 groups. The relationship between P300 measures and neuro psychological test (K-DRS) scores were evaluated by correlations. The latency of P300 was prolonged in AD and the effects were correlated with the severity of dementia. The P300 amplitude was not affected significantly in AD. Theres no difference between normal aged group and young group. These results suggest that the P300 component is specifically affected by Alzheimer type dementia.

  • In this paper, a new multiuser detector combining multicarrier and decorrelating detection schemes is proposed and analyzed in a frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel. The bit error probability is derived and compared with that of the conventional decorrelating detector. From the numerical results, it is shown that the proposed detector achieves better BER performance and lower computational complexity than those of the conventional decorrelating detector.

  • The magnetic ferrite nanoparticles were synthesized and coated by silica precursor in controlling the coating thicknesses and sizeses. The surface modification was performed with amino-functionalized organic silanes on silica coated magnetic nanoparticles. The use of functionalized self-assembled magnetic ferrite nanoparticles for nucleic acid separation process give a lot of advantages rather than the conventional silica based process.

  • Identification of blood group from dental hard tissue for the purpose of individual identification of a highly burned corpse would play a significant role in a practical legal medicine. The author conducted a study of blood group with teeth left stading at a high temperature by the method of elution test. The following results were obtained. 1. The blood identifcation from heated dental hard tissue proved to be possible. 2. In cases of heat-treated theeth at $100^{\circ}C$ for 120 minutes, at $150^{\circ}C$ for 120 minutes and at $200^{\circ}C$ for 45 minutes for A.B.O(H) blood group, the identification of blood group was possible. 3. In case of heat-treated teeth, thermostability of blood group was found to be $150^{\circ}C$. 4. The adequate surface area for the detection of blood group was 40-80 meshes.

  • Ojeok-san has been commonly used to treat low back pain disease. We performed the experiments on simultaneous analysis of 11 compounds and antioxidant effects of Ojeok-san. A HPLC method was established for simultaneous analysis of 11 compounds. The detection wavelengths were set at 230, 254, 280, 320, and 330 nm. The detected 11 compounds from Ojeok-san water extract showed good linearity($r^2{\geq}0.9997$). Limit of detection(LOD) and limit of quantification(LOQ) were 0.04-0.87 ${\mu}g/mL$ and 0.13-2.63 ${\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The antioxidant effects of Ojeok-san water extract were investigated by DPPH and ABTS assays. Ojeok-san water extract significantly increased the DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging effects in a dose-dependent manner. The $RC_{50}$ value of Ojeok-san on DPPH radical was 284.71 ${\mu}g/mL$ and that of ABTS radical was 96.16 ${\mu}g/mL$.
