The purpose of this study was to investigate the graph interpretation ability and perception of high school students and preservice secondary teachers in Earth science. We developed two different instruments; one was a graph interpretation ability inventory that consists of 9 graph types with 18 items, and the other one is two questionnaires to explore the participants' perception about Earth science-related graph. The results of this study are as follows: High school students and preservice secondary teachers demonstrated their remarkable ability in interpreting a line graph, but showed their limited ability with the graph of overlapped and directional change, which means the graph interpretation ability was affected by a graph type; two groups participated in this study revealed a considerable difference in the graph interpretation ability depending on the grade level; preservice teachers were superior to high school students in discriminating two graphs, the representation method, which are different with the same topic; and many participants in both groups considered that the property of Earth science graph was considerably different from that of other science subjects, especially in directional change graph, scatter graph, contour map, and domain graph. The results suggest that the effective graph instruction strategies be developed in Earth science learning.
This study considers the performance of students in Grades 5 to 10 on four tasks assessing students' ability to evaluate data presented in numerical form, for example, in a list or table, or in graphical form, for example, in a frequency graph or scatter graph. The ability to tell a story from data or a graph is an important aspect of statistical literacy. The samples provide the opportunity to consider the association of two pairs of items, one from each type of interpretation, numerical and graphical. Educational implications for the outcomes and the classroom use of the items are considered.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the science gifted students' level of interpreting the oceanic graph and of understanding the oceanic physical concept through analyzing the Temperature-Salinity (T-S) diagram and inferring the SOFAR (SOund Fixing And Ranging) channel. A total of 106 gifted students in the 3rd year of a science gifted high school, using T-S diagrams published in one of the journals of Oceanology, developed descriptive questions asking the depth of the SOFAR channel to conduct the quantitative and qualitative analysis of graph interpretation ability. As a result, there was a big difference in the level of graphs interpretation and concepts understanding for each science gifted students such as interpreting, modeling, and converting, and exposed their alternative concepts about water temperature, salinity, and density. The results of this study will be used to understand the levels of science gifted students' graph interpretation in oceanology, and to provide the basic data for improving the teaching and learning methods of oceanology and also provide basic data for teaching material development related to graph analysis.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of MBL experiment instruction on the 7th graders' scientific inquiry skills and graph construction and interpretation ability in the unit "Elements and movement of sea water". Results are as follows: First, this study analyzed the influence on students' scientific inquiry skill after having six MBL instructional classes. The result showed a significant difference in the scientific inquiry skills between the experimental group and the control group, which implies that the instruction using MBL was an effective way to improve students' scientific inquiry skills. Second, this study also analyzed the influence on students' abilities to construct and interpret graphs. The result did not show any significant differences between the experimental group and the control group in the ability to construct graphs. But it showed significant differences in the ability to interpretgraphs, which means that instruction using MBL was an effective way to improve students' ability to interpret graphs.
The purpose of this study was to examine elementary school students' characteristics and difficulties in drawing and interpreting a line graph, and to present educational implications. Twenty five students(4th grader: 6, 5th grader: 9, and 6th grader: 10) at an elementary school participated in this study. We used a student's task which was about graphing on a given data table and interpreting his/her graph. The data table was on heating 200mL and 500mL of water and measuring their temperature at regular time intervals. We collected multiple source of data, and data analyzed based on the sub-variables of TOGS. The some results of this study are as follows: First, five children (20.0%), especially two of 10 sixth graders (20.0%), could not construct a line graph about a given data table. Second, twenty students (80.0%) had the ability on 'Scaling axes' and on 'Assigning variables to the axes', however, only a student understood why the time is on the longitudinal axis and the temperature is on the vertical axis. Third, in the case of 'Plotting points', twelve children (48.0%) could drew two graphs on a coordinate. Fourth, in the case of 'Selecting the corresponding value for Y (or X)', twenty student had little difficulty. on 'Describing the relationship between variables', seventeen students (68.0%) understood the relationship between time and temperature of water, and the relationship between temperature and amount of water. Finally, eleven students (44%) had the ability on 'Interrelating and extrapolation graphs.' Educational implications are also presented in this paper.
This study has analyzed the effect of graph activity using CBR on the graphic ability through the observation on the 4 math-gifted 5th grade students. The study had designed the graph activity class using CBR based on the theories of graph and progressed it twice for 40 minutes, respectably. The recorded videos of the classes and the interviews of students were collected for analyzing the data, and 2 weeks later, post inspection using the same questionnaire was held for the comparative analysis on the errors that the students had made in the interpretation of the graph. According to the results of this study, the students were able to understand the flow change of the graph, interpret the relationship between variables, and contextualize the dependent variables.

Graph is a major aspect of science textbooks. In this study, we investigated graph types and characteristics used in high school earth science subject by comparative analysis of science textbooks. The results of the analysis revealed that line graph and contour map was the most widely used graph types in earth science. Among line graphs, multiple line graph and YX graph was dominant. Comparing earth science graphs with other science graphs, earth science graphs exhibited superior in the number and variety. In earth science graphs, the portion of line graph was small, but the portion of contour map and scatter graph was larger than that of other science graphs. YX graph was the most specific graph type in earth science textbooks. The results of our study have implications for reform in function and structure of graph. We suggest that future studies be focused on students' ability of earth science graph interpretation.
In order to maintain and evaluate the adequate humidity and temperature of a museum, the data of these should be periodically monitored and accumulated. For this purpose, We have designed the interpretation method of charts of the widely used thermo hydrorecorder at the museum, and developed the computer-based program (name of the program : HATH interpretation program). This method is as follows; The recording of thermo hydrorecorder(model ; Sato R-704) Input a through scanner (UMAX type), and was transformed into numerical value and was processed the statistics by HATH interpretation program. Output can be present the numerical value and the graph which are classified by a day, a month, and a year. By this method, the humidity and temperature data which were taken from 12points in the exhibition case, storage and outdoor of the Ho-Am art Museum in 1995 were processed. At the results, its ability for fast processing, management and analysis of the data was proved to be excellent.
The unique teaching and learning difficulties of speed-related units in elementary school science are mainly due to the student's lack of mathematical thinking ability and procedural knowledge on speed measurement, and curriculums and textbooks must be constructed with these in mind. To identify the implications of composing a new science curriculum and relevant textbooks, this study reviewed the structure and contents of the speed-related units of three curriculums from the 2007 revised curriculum to the 2015 revised curriculum and the resulting textbooks and examined their relevance in light of the literature. Results showed that the current content carries the risk of making students calculate only the speed of an object through a mechanical algorithm by memorization rather than grasp the multifaceted relation between traveled distance, duration time, and speed. Findings also highlighted the need to reorganize the curriculum and textbooks to offer students the opportunity to learn the meaning of speed step-by-step by visualizing materials such as double number lines and dealing with simple numbers that are easy to calculate and understand intuitively. In addition, this paper discussed the urgency of improving inquiry performance such as process skills by observing and measuring an actual object's movement, displaying it as a graph, and interpreting it rather than conducting data interpretation through investigation. Lastly, although the current curriculum and textbooks emphasize the connection with daily life in their application aspects, they also deal with dynamics-related content somewhat differently from kinematics, which is the main learning content of the unit. Hence, it is necessary to reorganize the contents focusing on cases related to speed so that students can grasp the concept of speed and use it in their everyday lives. With regard to the new curriculum and textbooks, this study proposes that students be provided the opportunity to systematically and deeply study core topics rather than exclude content that is difficult to learn and challenging to teach so that students realize the value of science and enjoy learning it.
