  • The primary aim of this study is to examine difference in psychological well-being (PWB) and family support and explore its factors by the types of productive activity: paid labor, voluntary activity, or caregiving for their grandchildren. Three hundred females aged over 60 currently participating in productive activities were interviewed. The main results are as follow. First, PWB of volunteers is higher than any other group. Second, level of support provided by family members is highest for the group of grandchildren caregiving. Third, the variables affecting PWB for paid workers are educational level and material reward. As for the volunteers, PWB is explained by satisfaction with the given activity and instrumental support of their family members on it. PWB of grandchildren caregivers is explained by their marital status, income, material reward, emotional and instrumental support.

  • The purposes of this research were to add to the developing knowledge base about the burden and social support of grandmothers involved with caring grandchildren, and to examine whether a significant relationship exists between their burden and social support perceived by the grandmothers. A convenience sample of 102 grandmothers was recruited from five collective apartment areas at a small city in Korea. The criteria of selection of sample were that the grandmothers were raising their grandchildren under the age of 36 months for 3 months or longer at own or gandchildren's home. The instruments used were a 15-item multidemensional burden scale and a 8-item social support scale. Both scales were self report, five point Likert type scales. The higher the score, the higher the degree of burden and social support. Data was collected by two prepared research assistants visiting subjects' home from December 10, 1998 to March 20, 1999. The collected data were analysed using mean, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficient computed by SPSS software. The results were as follows. 1. In the age distribution of grandmothers, the over half of subjects(58.8%) were under 60 years old. The majority(69.6%) of subjects were married at time of data collection. 79(77.5%) of the sample reported that their perceived health status was good or over. 2. The burden of the grandmothers was not scored high, and the item means on burden scale were ranged from 2.26 to 4.19 out of 5. 'Short of private time'(4.19) had the highest score, followed by 'fatigue'(3.92), 'short of rest'(3.75), and 'short of contact with friends and neighbors'(3.62). The lowest item was 'family doesn't help me'(2.26), and followed by 'family doesn't understand me'(2.33), 'angry with family' (2.43), and 'angry while caring for grandchild'(2.60). 3. There were significant relationships between the burden and present health status(p<.01), childcaring confidence(p<.01), and motive of caring(p<.01). 4. The score of social support, was ranging from 3.61 to 4.01 out of 5. 5. The relationship between burden and social support was found to be correlated negatively. The relationship was statistically significant(γ= - .2833, p<.001). In conclusion, it was found that the burden was not high and burden of grandmothers caring grandchildren was correlated negatively to social support. Therefore, these results provide a basis for developing a nursing intervention to reduce the burden of grandmothers.

  • The main purpose of this study is to figure out the spending tendency of elderly consumers for their grandchildren. To this end, a detailed survey was carried out for two months from October 1 to November 30, 2011. The respondents consist of 461 elderly consumers over 60s who have grandchildren in elementary grades. Among the gathered data, relevant information was sorted out, coded, and then turned into statistical figures through SPSS 18.0 program. The outcome of this research is explained in the following three respects. First of all, based upon factor and cluster analysis, the role of grandparents has been divided into three categories, which are a babysitter, a friend and a visitor. Depending on their role, the surveyed elderly have been split into three groups-'Friend Group', 'Formal Visitor Group', 'Attached Group'. Second, to give you an overview of the consumption trend of the three groups, this study has reviewed the expenditure items, spending amount and consumption patterns, and made a list of products and services they purchased for the past one year for their grandchildren. Third, given the probability of wealth transfer to the next generation, there is a compelling need to figure out the purchase pattern of financial products. The elderly have been categorized into those with bank deposits only and those with a mixture of bank deposits and other financial products (insurance, fund, stocks, gold, dollar etc.).

  • Recently, an interest on how to moderate parenting stress of grandparents is rising according to rising depression of grandparents of grandparents and grandchildren family(GGF) because of parenting stress So, this study tried to analyze moderating effects by setting social support and stress coping behaviors as moderator variable in order to know how much parenting stress of grandparents would influence their depression. For this purpose, we selected 369 cases of grandparents who were being provided social welfare service and to 334 cases out of them, did multigroup analysis using hierarchical regression analysis and structural equation model under spss Vor. 19.0 program. Followings are the results. First, the more parenting stress was high, the more depression high. But when social support was high, parenting stress low. And the more parenting stress was high, faith dependence, negative emotional expression and passive evasion as stress coping behaviors also high while problem reestablishment low. Second, emotional support, information support, and material support as social support had moderating effects in which parenting stress influenced depression while appraisal support had not. Third, faith dependence and low passive evasion as stress coping behaviors had moderating effects in influence of parenting stress to depression while problem reestablishment has not. On the one hand, emotional expression was meaningless in explaining moderating effects in connection with parenting stress. Through these, we draw a social welfare practical implication that could lift moderating effect of social support and stress coping behavior in between parenting stress and depression of grandparents of grandparents and grandchildren Family.

  • This study was conducted in order to understand grandmothers' satisfaction of caring for working mothers' children and the influence of related variables with regard to living arrangements. The data were collected from 245 grandmothers who have been caring for their grandchildren for more than 6 months. The data were analyzed by mean, t-test, $x^2$-test, and hierarchical multiple regression. The results were as follows: First, Degree of satisfaction was lower in grandmothers who were living with their children than those who were not. Second, the variables affecting the grandmothers living with their children were economic status, extent of care giving activities, and social support, wherein social support proved to be the most influential. In the case of those not living with their children, the significant variables were motive and social support, motive being more influential. This result indicates that affecting variables differ by the grandmothers' living arrangements, and thus the strategy to enhance their care giving satisfaction should differ as well, based on the findings.

  • Purpose: This qualitative study aimed to identify the common, lived experiences of grandmothers who cared for their grandchildren as the primary caregivers. Methods: This study was based on the phenomenological method described by Colaizzi (1978). Results: Seven theme clusters emerged from the data as follows: "grandmother caregivers accept the parenting role of the incessant responsibilities and the distrust of non-kin caregivers.", "grandmother caregivers have a double maternal roles; an instrument-oriented maternal role to their own child and relationship-oriented maternal role to their grandchild.", "grandmother caregivers are partially authorized to make decisions in the matters of their grandchild.", "grandmother caregivers suffer a deterioration in their health by an acceleration of the aging process.", "caregiving causes grandmother caregivers to feel a sense of social isolation, and persue various coping strategies to control this feeling.", "grandmother caregivers have a greater feeling of self-esteem, but they often conflict with their adult children if they don't feel appreciated by them.", "grandmother caregivers have limited social support and their health issues are often overlooked in the family context.' Conclusion: The results of this study can guide nurses and health care workers to understand the experiences of grandmother caregivers and to implement individualized nursing interventions suited for them.

  • This study is based on the National Pension Research Institute's 2013 Korean Retirement and Income Study(KReIS) 5 Data for Parents and Children Care over 50 years old and analyzed the satisfaction level of life according to the characteristics of 226 people in society. The results showed that women were more satisfied with their lives than men, and when the age was lower, when they had spouses, and when they had independent economic power. As for the grandchildren caring provider, the higher the education levels, the higher the satisfaction with life. And across all areas, the grandchildren care provider showed greater satisfaction with life than the parents care provider. These results show that the burden of the parents' carers is as great as that. Suggestions based on these results are as follows. First, It is necessary to develop a health care program that can be easily accessed by family carers. Second, Direct economic support is needed, with the primary focus being on family carers. Third, services targeting parents care providers are needed. It is also necessary to form a network that can share the difficulties of parental care.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the different views of grandparent's that are rearing children from the grandmother and working mom as co-caregivers by studying conflicts and the experience made by grandmothers by rearing children through a phenomenological approach, and to help to build healthy relationships and furthermore to promote a healthy educational environment. Data were collected from six working mothers from a child care center in Gyeonggi, and their six grandmothers who were rearing grandchildren through in-depth interviews, emails and observation based on the instruction of semi-structured interviews. For analysis, a phenomenological analysis method is used. As a result, 78 meaning units, 15 sub-elements and 6 theme categories were drawn. Theme categories were (1) grandmothers' rearing experience; perform a double-role through grandchildren-rearing (2) working moms' rearing experience; conflicts over ideologue of motherhood (3) grandmothers' rearing positive effect: increasing grandmothers' efficacy and intimate relationships with grandchildren (4) working moms' rearing positive effect: reducing working moms' children-rearing stress (5) negative effect: increasing grandmothers' children-rearing stress and working moms' low children-rearing efficacy (6) rearing conflicts: the two mothers' conflicts over children-rearing values. Through the study, it implies that social intervention is needed to solve the conflicts between two mothers over the rearing attitudes and methods as understanding and intervention is needed.

  • Grandparent-grandchildren family adolescents(GGFAs) need to be well discussed because they tend to be more influenced by the negative surroundings than ordinary family adolescents. Over the past few years, several studies have been made on the correlation between the risk factor, the protective factor and the school resilience of GGFAs, but these studies have the limit to explain the only correlation between the one factor and the school resilience. So the purpose of this study was to examine not only the direct effect between the risk factor and the protective factor, but also the parametric path and effect that the one factor has influence on the correlation between the another factor and the school resilience of GGFAs. We investigated the 328 GGFAs in Korea, and the analytic method used was the Structural Equation Modeling(SEM). The followings are the results of this paper. It was found that the model adaptability had a considerable validity by inspecting the SEM, which showed not only the direct effect between the risk factor, protective factor and the school resilience of GGFAs, but also the mediation effect by the protective factor. The risk factors - the indifference of teacher, the negative attachment relationship, melancholy, uneasiness etc - had a negative influence on the school resilience of GGFAs. The protective factors - the supporss etteacher, self-esteem etc - had a positive influence on the school resilience of GGFAs. The protective factors were found to reduce the negative influence on the school resilience of GGFAs.
