The optimum conditions for durable press treatment of cotton fabrics using glyoxal as a nonformaldehyde crosslinking agent were investigated. Crosslinking reaction was conducted in the presence of different catalysts such as aluminum sulfate, magnesium chloride, or magnesium chloride-citric acid mixture at various mole ratios of catalyst to glyoxal. Aluminum sulfate was proven the most effective one among those used. Glycol addition into a glyoxal padding bath increased the wrinkle recovery angle(WRA) and whiteness of treated fabrics. The optimum mole ratio of glycol to glyoxal was 1:1. Diethylene glycol addition produced better overall performance to the glyoxal-crosslinked fabric compared to ethylene glycol addition.
Glyoxal or methylglyoxal was incubated with catalase in 0.24 M sodium phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) at 37$^{\circ}C$. Dicarbonyls modify and inactivate catalase. Plasmid DNA that is directly incubated with glycation propagators, glyoxal and methylglyoxal, showed different DNA mobility shift compared to nomal plasmid DNA. When plasmid DNA is added in Fenton reaction with glycated catalase, plasmid DNA was significantly strand broken and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine production was time dependently increased. These results suggest that glycation of antioxidant is synergistic effect to oxidative stress.

Objectives: The present study was performed to obtain acute toxicity information on glyoxal in male rats after intratracheal instillation. Methods: In order to calculate the LD50 of glyoxal using Probit analysis with SAS, the test article was one intratracheal instillation to male Sprague-Dawley rats at dose levels of 0, 225, 451 or 902 mg/kg. During the test period, mortality, clinical signs, and body and organ weights were examined. At the end of the 14-day observation period, all animals were sacrificed and complete gross postmortem and histopathological examinations were performed. Results: Four animals of the 902 mg/kg group died within one week after the administration of glyoxal. All treatment group in a dose dependent manner, decreased body weight was found during the study period. The absolute and relative lung weight, and histopathological changes (bronchiolar-alveolar hyperplasia, chronic inflammation) of lung exhibited an increased in glyoxal treated groups in a dose dependent manner. However, there were no changes on the organ weights and histopathological changes of any other organ except lung. Conclusions: The results obtained in the present study suggest that the LD50 in male Sprague-Dawley rats after a single intratracheal instillation of glyoxal was considered to be 866.9 mg/kg and the lung was found to be the target organ for glyoxal.
The surface treated hydroxypropyl methylcellulose(HPMC) which could adjust the soluble time was synthesized when 40 wt % glyoxal solution and $KH_2PO_4$ were sprayed and reacted. And also, the solution dynamic at different ratios of two adding agents were identified If the surface of HPMC was treated with only glyoxal, the dispersion characteristics at different ratios of two adding agents were identified If the surface of HPMC was treated with only glyoxal, the dispersion was observed in the neutral solution and the viscosity was increased after directly dissolved as the solution become alkali condition. But the fine-powder type of HPMC which reacted with glyoxal and $KH_2PO_4$ was dispersed regardless of pH of solution and observed that it was dissolved and its viscosity increased after elapsing some time. With increasing amount of glyoxal and $KH_2PO_4$, the soluble time was delayed. The reaction condition was about 60 min at $75{\sim}85^{\circ}C$. Especially, the removal process of organic solvent after reaction was not required due to reaction under water solution without organic during glyoxal and $KH_2PO_4$ treatment. And also, the HPMC which could adjust the soluble rate in water or organic solvent by changing the degree of substitution of HPMC was synthesized.

The role of the active oxygens on plasmid DNA damage by carbonyl compounds derived from Maillard reaction was investigated. Plasmid DNA extracted from E. coli Hb1O1 was reacted with carbonyl compounds, such as glyoxal, methyl glyoxal, dihydroxyacetone, diacetyl, glyceraldehyde, glycolaldehyde and furfural with and without the active oxygen scavengers at 37$^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours, and then the degree of damage was determined by using 1 % agarose gel electro-phoresis. All of the carbonyl compounds except furfural caused to damage of DNA. Among these, glyoxal, methyl glyoxal and dihydroxyacetone markedly induced the damage of DNA. On the other hand, the DNA damage by the carbonyl compounds was greatly inhibited by catalase, superoxide dismutase and $\alpha$-tocopherol it is considered that the damage of DNA is due to active oxygens, such as singlet oxygen, hydrogen peroxide and superoxide anion generated during the autoxidation of carbonyl compounds.

The effects of various catalysts and softners on the anti-crease finish of ramie with glyoxal were investigated. A number of metal salts commonly used as Lewis acid catalysts in DP finishing of cotton with formaldehyde and N-methylol agents were screened for glyoxal treatment of ramie fabric. Various organic and inorganic acids were mixed with Lewis acid catalyst as co-catalysts to improve catalytic activity. As a result, the combination of aluminum sulfate and citric acid was proven highly effective in catalyzing the crosslinking of ramie cellulose by glyoxal under lower curing temperature. With a mixed catalyst, performance properties, such as whiteness and tearing strength as well as wrinkle recovery of treated ramie fabric were improved as compared with that treated with aluminum sulfate alone. Additional improvement of tearing strength and wrinkle recovery was achieved by applying silicons softner in the treatment bath.

The effect of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on the formation of $N^{\varepsilon}$-(carboxymethly)lysine (CML). one of the endproducts in the Maillard reaction of protein (or glycation), was investigated. Glyoxal, a main precursor of CML formation, was produced from both glucose and fructose during their autoxidation. The transition metal ion showed to involve in the formation of glyoxal by the metal catalyzed oxidation, suggesting that ROS accelerated the reducing sugar autoxidation. The stimulative effect of ROS on the autoxidation was more prominent in glucose than in fructose. Polyunsaturated acids (PUFAs) were shown to form glyoxal by peroxidation in proportion to the degree of unsaturation, but ROS did not affect on PUFA peroxidation. Ascorbic acid also lysine (CMHL) in the model system using hippuryl lysine and glucose had a significant effect on ROS, whereas it had no effect on ROS using glyoxal as a reactant. Almost the same trend was obtained by the analysis of antigen coated indirect noncompetitive ELISA using monoclonal antibody (6D12). These data indicated that ROS affected glucose autoxidation as well as mediated both CML and glyoxal formation, but did not affect the reactive compounds such as fructose, PUFAs and ascorbic acid.
cDNA of the glx1 gene encoding glyoxal oxidase (GLX) from Phanerochaete chrysosporium was isolated and expressed in Pichia pastoris. The recombinant GLX (rGLX) produces $H_2O_2$ over 7.0 nmol/min/mL using methyl glyoxal as a substrate. Use of rGLX as a generator of $H_2O_2$ improved the coupled reaction with recombinant manganese peroxidase resulting in decolorization of malachite green up to $150{\mu}M$ within 90 min.
