  • The construction of bored tunnels in soft ground inevitably causes ground movements. In the urban environment these may be of particular significance, because of their influence on buildings, other tunnels and services. The prediction of ground movements and the assessment of the potential effects on the structures is therefore an essential aspect of planning, design and construction of a tunnelling project in the urban environment. In this study, to minimize the effect of tunnelling-Induced ground movements on the adjacent structures, a system for tile settlement risk management was developed. The GIS based risk assessment system for adjacent structures developed in this study consists of several modules such as building information module, settlement evaluation module, potential risk assessment module for adjacent structures, and analysis module for monitoring data. This system focuses on controlling and managing construction processes that may lead to settlement In the surrounding buildings and can contribute to producing the optimum technical and economic design.

  • The Aim of this development is the safety management network of embankment facilities using forecasting analysis algorism. Using this algorithm it is possible to predict a failure of embankment facilities in advance. therefore, it is necessary for making plans of a safety countermove. In this development we have researched the analysis method which could operate effectively the embankment facilities using real-time monitoring data from a remote sensing system and the safety managerial program using the algorithm from the analysis method developed.

  • Slopes near a dam body can be categorized into 4 groups, such as right and left abutment slopes, reservoir slopes, slopes along the access road and slopes along the relocated road. For each of the geological investigation, the design standards, the evaluation methods of safety and the maintenance methods, both abutment slopes in the four dams have different characteristics from the conventional cut slopes in that they can severely affect the dam safety. From this point of view this study compares and analyzes the geological investigation methods, the status of design and construction, evaluation method of safety, and monitoring & maintaining methods for four major dams in Korea, such as Soyanggang dam, 'Andong dam, Chungju dam and Boryong dam.

  • Optical fibre sensors have shown a potential to serve real time health monitoring of the structures. They can be easily embedded or attached to the structures and are not affected by the electro-magnetic field. Furthermore, they have the flexibility of the sensor size and very highly sensitive. In this study, we conducted several laboratory and field tests using a novel optical sensor based on Brillouin scattering. One of the advantages of this technique is that the bare fibre itself acts as sensing element without any special fibre processing or preparation. Test results have shown that BOTDR can be a great solution for sensor systems of Civil Engineering Smart Structures.

  • Nowadays, owing to the development of analysis techniques for PDA test, we can evaluate the serious damage of pile during driving in site. In this study, we checked the damage of pile by pulling it out after evaluation of the pile damage during driving by PDA testing. After that, almost damaged pile was checked and the outline depth of damage could be verified. To increase the quality of driven pile, we have to increase the number of PDA testing for drivability analysis with checking the damage especially for preliminary pile driving and dynamic load test for checking the bearing capacity and consider the application of driving by energy monitoring.

  • Several sensor systems are used to estimate the reinforceing effect of pile in hihg cut slopes, and to find a failure zone in slopes effectively. Inclinometer, extensometer and V/W sensor have shown a great potentiality to serve real time health monitoring of the slope structures. They were embedded or attached to the structures, we conducted field tests and test results have shown great solutions for sensor systems of Civil Engineering Smart Structures. This research is to seek for the relationships among the slope movement and the reinforceing effect of pile, and the strain distribution in a active zone by analyzing the data from the in-situ measurement so that the possible failure zone should be well defined based on the relationships. Also, the relationships between temperature and reinforceing effect of pile, and the strain distribution are estimated in this paper.

  • FBG sensor system is applied to the concrete lining structure in Taegu subway. Near the structure, the power cable tunnel construction started. We wanted to measure the deformation of the structure due to the construction by the FBG sensor. The applied sensor has the gauge length of 1 meter to overcome the inhomogeneity of the concrete material with enough length. In order to fix tightly to the structure, the partially stripped parts of the sensor glued to the package and slip phenomenon between fiber and acrylate jacket was prevented. Prestrain of the sensor was imposed by controlling the two fixed points with bolts and nuts in order to measure compressive strain as well as tensile strain. The behavior of subway lining structure could be monitored very well.

  • In this study, slope stability analysis of LCRS(Leachate Collection Removel System) in waste landfill was peformed by large scale field test. Geocomat is new type of geocomposite product. Gecomat is a sort of Geocomposite product. It is composed of nonwoven geotextiles, woven geotextile, and geonet. Large scale field tests were performed on the slope of different two LCRSsections with static loading condition. One is LCRS section witch consist of GCL, HDPE and Geocomat, another is GCL, HDPE, and woven type geocomposite. The behavior of geosynthetics lined slope was monitored by incorporating instrumentation including vertical soil pressure meter, settlement plate, strain gauges, potential meter, displacement pin.. Based on the field monitoring, the Geocomat LCRS section is less sliding than the conventional geocomposite LCRS section.
