Aim: It is well known that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) such as benzo (a) pyrene have carcinogenic properties and may cause many types of cancers in human populations. Genetic susceptibility might be due to variation in genes encoding for carcinogen metabolizing enzymes, such as cytochrome P-450 (CYP450). Our study aimed to investigate the effect of genetic polymorphisms of CYP1A1 (m1 and m2) on genetic damage in 115 coal-tar workers exposed to PAHs at their work place. Methods: Genetic polymorphisms of CYP1A1 were determined by the PCR-RFLP method. Comet and buccal micronucleus assays were used to evaluate genetic damage among 115 coal tar workers and 105 control subjects. Results: Both CYP1A1 m1 and CYP1A1 m2 heterozygous and homozygous (wt/mt+mt/mt) variants individually as well as synergistically showed significant association (P<0.05) with genetic damage as measured by tail moment (TM) and buccal micronuclei (BMN) frequencies in control and exposed subjects. Conclusion: In our study we found significant association of CYP1A1 m1 and m2 heterozygous (wt/mt)+homozygous (mt/mt) variants with genetic damage suggesting that these polymorphisms may modulate the effects of PAH exposure in occupational settings.
The myogenic regulatory factors is a family of transcription factors that play a key role in the development of skeletal muscle fibers, which are the main factors to affect the meat taste and texture. In the present study, we performed candidate gene analysis to identify single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the MyoD, Myf5, MyoG, and Mrf4 genes using polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformation polymorphism in 360 Erlang Mountain Chickens from three different housing systems (cage, pen, and free-range). The general linear model procedure was used to estimate the statistical significance of association between combined genotypes and muscle fiber traits of chickens. Two polymorphisms (g.39928301T>G and g.11579368C>T) were detected in the Mrf4 and MyoD gene, respectively. The diameters of thigh and pectoralis muscle fibers were higher in birds with the combined genotypes of GG-TT and TTCT (p<0.05). Moreover, the interaction between housing system and combined genotypes has no significant effect on the traits of muscle fiber (p>0.05). Our findings suggest that the combined genotypes of TT-CT and GG-TT might be advantageous for muscle fiber traits, and could be the potential genetic markers for breeding program in Erlang Mountain Chickens.
Objective: Calving ease (CE) is a complex reproductive trait of economic importance in dairy cattle. This study was aimed to investigate the genetic merits of CE for Holsteins in Korea. Methods: A total of 297,614 field records of CE, from 2000 to 2015, from first parity Holstein heifers were recorded initially. After necessary data pruning such as age at first calving (18 to 42 mo), gestation length, and presence of sire information, final datasets for CE consisted of 147,526 and 132,080 records for service sire calving ease (SCE) and daughter calving ease (DCE) evaluations, respectively. The CE categories were ordered and scores ranged from CE1 to CE5 (CE1, easy; CE2, slight assistance; CE3, moderate assistance; CE4, difficult calving; CE5, extreme difficulty calving). A linear transformation of CE score was obtained on each category using Snell procedure, and a scaling factor was applied to attain the spread between 0 (CE5) and 100% (CE1). A sire-maternal grandsire model analysis was performed using ASREML 3.0 software package. Results: The estimated direct heritability ($h^2$) from SCE and DCE evaluations were $0.11{\pm}0.01$ and $0.08{\pm}0.01$, respectively. Maternal $h^2$ estimates were $0.05{\pm}0.02$ and $0.04{\pm}0.01$ from SCE and DCE approaches, respectively. Estimates of genetic correlations between direct and maternal genetic components were $-0.68{\pm}0.09$ (SCE) and $-0.71{\pm}0.09$ (DCE). The average direct genetic effect increased over time, whereas average maternal effect was low and consistent. The estimated direct predicted transmitting ability (PTA) was desirable and increasing over time, but the maternal PTA was undesirable and decreasing. Conclusion: The evidence on sufficient genetic variances in this study could reflect a possible selection improvement over time regarding ease of calving. It is expected that the estimated genetic parameters could be a valuable resource to formulate sire selection and breeding plans which would be directed towards the reduction of calving difficulty in Korean Holsteins.

Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) have an important effect on system defense and security. Recently, most IDS methods have used transformed features, selected features, or original features. Both feature transformation and feature selection have their advantages. Neighborhood component analysis feature transformation and genetic feature selection (NCAGAFS) is proposed in this research. NCAGAFS is based on soft computing and data mining and uses the advantages of both transformation and selection. This method transforms features via neighborhood component analysis and chooses the best features with a classifier based on a genetic feature selection method. This novel approach is verified using the KDD Cup99 dataset, demonstrating higher performances than other well-known methods under various classifiers have demonstrated.

Stably transformed Drosophila melanogaster 52 cells producing recombinant VP7 were obtained, and recombinant VP7 expression was confirmed by Western blot analysis. The molecular weight of recombinant VP7 expressed in 52 cells was approximately 35.5 kDa, and 75% of the total VP7 produced was present in the medium. Recombinant VP7 contained N-linked glycosylated oligosaccharides. Aprotinin, leupeptin, and polyvinylpyrrolidone did not have any noticeable effect on recombinant VP7 production; however, DMSO and sodium butyrate increased its production by 120% and 60%, respectively.
For an analysis of some Helmholtz resonators, it is likely to be more appropriate to consider acoustic field within cavity than just the 1-DOF analogous model. However, a design method that considers increased parameters than the lumped model. is not a trivial process due to the trade-off effect among the parameters. In this paper. the genetic algorithm. one of the optimization technique that rapidly converges to global fittest solution and robust convergence. is applied to the design process of Helmholtz resonators. Results show that the genetic algorithm can be successfully and efficiently used to find the resonant frequencies for both lumped model and distributed model.

In this study, a genetic algorithm was utilized to optimize the stacking sequence of a composite plate subjected to a high velocity impact. The aim is to minimize the maximum backplane displacement of the plate. In the finite element model, we idealized the impactor using solid elements and modeled the composite plate by shell elements to reduce the analysis time. Various tests were carried out to investigate the effect of parameters in the genetic algorithm such as the type of variables, population size, number of discrete variables, and mutation probability.
A study on genetic variability and association of yield attributing characters with grain yield was carried out using 35 deepwater rice genotypes. High genotypic co-efficient of variation (GCV) was observed for plot yield, $EBT/m^2$, plant height and days to $50\%$ flowering (DFF). For all the traits, estimates of the phenotypic co-efficient of variation (PCV) were higher than GCV, indicating presence of environmental influence. High heritability and genetic advance was observed for plot yield, $EBT/m^2$ and plant height. Plot yield had significant positive association with test weight, $EBT/m^2$ and DFF. However, test weight had the maximum direct effect on grain yield
Germinating conidia of Aspergillus nidulans diploid heterozygous for color and other genetic markers were used to direct and distinguish genetic events such as mutation, mitotic crossingover and nondisjunction in a single test after treatment with N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (NG), mitomycin C(MC), and chloral hydrate(CH). The following results were obtained : 1. NG reduced the survival of conidia and increased the frequencies of miototic segregants about sevenfoli over the control ; among the mitotic segregants the predominant genetic event was mitotic crossingover. NG also produced many abnormal colonies, which appeared to be of the types caused by induced semidominant lethals or chromosomal aberrations, and the aneuploid types found spontaneously. 2. After treatment with MC the survival of conidia was reduced but few abnormal colonies were produced. The frequencies of miotic segregants were increased about threefold over the control ; in the mitotic segeregants the induced genetic event was mitotic crossingover. 3. CH gave no apparent effect on the survival of conidia and the frequencies of mitotic segregants. However, CH generated abnormal colonies, very greatly, which turned out to be of the aneuploid types. This result suggests that CH interferes with the normal distribution of chromosomes in mitosis.
This paper considers the potential impact of biological approaches such as bio-copying (biomimetics) and biomanipulating (e.g. genetic engineering) on future developments in the field of textiles and, in particular, fibres. If analytical tools for studying biological systems combined with those of materials science are further developed, and higher efficiency and reproducibility of genetic engineering technology can be achieved, the potential for the copying and manipulation of nature for textile innovations will be immense. The present state for both fields is described with examples such as touch and close fastener, structurally coloured fibres, the Lotus of lect (for bio-copying), as well as herbicide tolerant cotton, insecticide resistant cotton (Bt cotton), cotton polyester bicomponent fibres, genetically engineered silkworm and silk protein, and spider fibres. (for genetic engineering).
