Chinese jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.), a member of family Rhamnaceae, is an economically important species. It has high nutritional value in fruits, and its medicinal properties have led to extensive use in traditional oriental medicine. In this study, we investigated the genetic characteristics of 270 jujube germplasms collected from the six major jujube fruit production areas in Korea including Boeun and Gyeongsan, in order to understand the current situation on cultivated varieties of domestic jujube and to obtain useful data for selection of superior germplasms and establishing their breeding plans. The results of ISSR marker analysis revealed that the Shannon's information index of the 270 germplasms was 0.107 and the genetic similarity was as high as 0.935 showing the dominance of a specific cultivar or germplasm, and almost 67% (180) of them were identified at the same genotype with 'Bokjo'. The domestic commercial jujube populations could be characterized by very low genetic diversity and thus may be vulnerable to external disturbances. In addition, it seems that most of the jujube fruits in domestic market were largely produced through parthenocarpy.

Ecklonia cava Kjellman is a common kelp found in shallow subtidal in warm-temperate waters in the northwest Pacific Ocean. This species has shown substantial morphological variation along with subsistence in different locations and local environments. We quantified the magnitude of morphological variation of E. cava from six populations along ~700 km of coastline from Jeju Island to Dokdo in Korea. In addition, we examined genetic distance among the populations using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. Most morphological characteristics investigated were significantly different among locations. Multivariate analyses indicated two phenetically distinct groups (nearshore, sheltered vs. offshore, exposed), indicating wave exposure with turbidity are presumably major factors for the separation. With RAPD data, results of Nei's diversity (H) and AMOVA showed considerable variations in within- and between-populations. Pairwise ${\Phi}_{ST}$ and $N_m$ values indicated moderate gene flow between the six locations. Results of Nei's analysis revealed three genetically distinct groups, not consistent with the morphological groupings, indicating that a time gap may exist between morphological and genetic variations. This study also suggests dispersal distance of this kelp may be longer than what is commonly thought and genetic similarity in the populations was largely reflected by the direction of ocean current rather than just geographical distance.

Lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) is one of the important legumes and cheaper source of protein in Bangladesh that displays great biological diversity. Isozyme, one of the most important protein markers to detect genetic polymorphism in lentil, whereas we considered thirteen-isozyme in six varieties viz., BARI masur-1, BARI masur-2, BARI masur-3, BARI masur-4, BARI masur-5 and BARI masur-6. The highest polymorphism was found in tyrosinase isozyme system. UPGMA analysis revealed that the highest similarity between BARI masur-5 and BARI masur-6 whereas, the highest genetic distance between BARI masur-1 and BARI masur-5 reflecting higher intervarietal variation. Principal component analysis (PCA) also revealed the similar results that of unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA). The first, second and third PCs contributed 81.58%, 11.19% and 4.94% variation respectively, with cumulative variation of the first three PCs was 75.45%. Consequently, Isozyme could clearly assed the genetic diversity at intervarietal levels and these two varieties can be considered as valuable gene resources for future breeding and conservation programs.
Thirty-two germplasms of Korean adlay landraces were examined to analyse the genetic relationship through the amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) approach. Total number of AFLP products generated by 12 selective primer combinations was 882. The number of polymorphic fragments by each primer combination greatly varied from 4 to 51 with a mean of 20.3, bands visible on the polyacrylamide gel. A genetic similarity coefficient was used for cluster analysis following UPGMA (unweighted pair grouping method of averages) method. The resulting clusters were represented in the form of a dendrogram. The clustering was not tight in the dendrogram. There was generally no clear grouping of the adlay according to the geographic regions in which germplasms were collected. The present AFLP analysis imply that although Korean adlay displayed a larger amount of AFLP variation within germplasms, the variation was shown independently without reflecting a clinal variation. This study demonstrated that AFLP method can be used to examine the genetic relationships among different germplasms of adlay.

Malate dehydrogenase is a ubiquitous enzyme in plants, involving in a range of metabolic processes depending on its subcellular location. A malate dehydrogenase (PgMDH) cDNA was isolated and characterized from the root of Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer. The deduced amino acid sequence of PgMDH showed high similarity with the NAD-dependent mitochondrial malate dehydrogenase from Glycinemax (P17783), Eucalyptus gunnii (P46487), and Lycopersicon esculentum (AAU29198). And the segment of a malate dehydrogenase gene was amplified through RT-PCR. The expression of PgMDH was increased after treatments of chilling, salt, UV, cadmium or copper treatment.
Goosegrass [Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn] has been a nuisance to growers in Malaysia due to its increased resistance to commercial herbicides, rapid growth and dissemination, and interference with agricultural practices. In the course of developing an apt integrated management to control goosegrass, more information of this weed is needed. The aim of this study was to look into variations among the goosegrass ecotypes sampled throughout Malaysia from the aspects of genotype and phenotype. Sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) markers were employed in investigating the genetic diversity and relationships among the 18 goosegrass ecotypes. Consequently, 5 primer combinations amplified 13 fragments with the polymorphism rate of 69.23%. At 74% similarity, the ecotypes were clustered into 6 groups. Phenotypic variability of the goosegrass ecotypes was assessed by observing their morphology, growth and seed traits. Goosegrass ecotypes were sorted into 3 major groups at the genetic distance (DIST) of 0.37. Concurrences of the evaluated genetic distance, ecotypes with the closest and most distant relationships were assembled together in Group I which showed high variation even among ecotypes in the same group. Results obtained thus implied high molecular and morphological variations of the goosegrass ecotypes in Malaysia.

There is vast genetic diversity of Myanmar Mangoes. This study mainly focused on indigenous thirteen different mango landraces cultivated in central area of Myanmar, Kyauk-se District and their fruit characteristics by 18 descriptors together with genetic relationship among them by 12 SSR markers. Based on the morpho-physical characters, a wide variation among accessions was found. Genetic characterization of thirteen mango genotypes resulted in the detection of 302 scorable polymorphic bands with an average of 4.33 alleles per locus and an average polymorphism information content (PIC) of 0.7. All the genotypes were grouped into two major clusters by UPGMA cluster analysis and a genetic similarity was observed in a range of 61 ~ 85%. This study may somehow contribute insights into the identification of regional mango diversity in Myanmar and would be useful for future mango breeding program.

Thirty four Leuconostoc strains originated from kimchi were subjected to analyse their genetical similarity by using RAPD-PCR. At the 0.5 level of similarity, L. mesenteroides subsp. mesenteroides and L. mesenteroides subsp. dextranicum. formed 3 and 2 clusters, and each L. lactis and L. paramesenteroides strain was clustered in one, respectively. Every type strain tested as a control, belongs to the cluster or one of the clusters of the corresponding species or subspecies as the isolates from kimchi, respectively. However the similarity between a and b cluster was less than 0.2 and c cluster is even less similar to both of them (a and b). L. mesenteroides subsp. mesenteroides strains from kimchi have shown a varaiety of RAPD patterns in spite of morphological and physiological similarities.
Phylogenetic relationships among mulberry varieties (Morus species) were analyzed on the basis of RAPD in order to identify the possibility of classification for the species. Polymorphisms under RAPD method were compared among 41 mulberry varieties. From the results of RAPD for 41 mulberry varieties by use of 30 different primers, 151 polymorphic bands were formed out of 201 ones. Under the dendrogram based on cluster analysis with the polymorphic bands, the varieties were classified into 7 groups including two large and five small ones on 0.747 value of genetic similarity coefficient. In the large groups 19 and 16 varieties were belong to group I and III, respectively. On the other hand, relatively high genetic similarity was shown among the varieties belonging to the group I, II and III. While, relatively low similarity were done between them in the group IV-Ⅵ and the other groups, and Mohusang in the group Ⅶ showed the lowest phylogenetic relationship with the other varieties.

The genetic relationships of Korean native Orostachys species collected from various regions were analysed using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) method. Eighteen Orostachys species analysed with UPGMA were clustered into three groups A, B, and C. However, four species were not clustered into any group. O. iwarenge species in group A (No. 18-No. 22) showed low similarity with 66.3-73.9% according to the cluster analysis. O. malacophyllus species in group B (No. 12-No. 17) showed low similarity with 66.7-83.7% according to the cluster analysis. The similarity coefficient value of O. japonicus (No. 3-No. 8) except Anmyeondo collected variety (No. 9) showed higher level with 84.2-92.3% than O. iwarenge or O. malacophyllus. Therefore, O. japonicus is thought to be genetically stable, and have less regional variation.
