The generalized Hoek-Brown (H-B) function provides a unique failure condition for a jointed rock mass, in which the strength parameters of rock mass are deduced from the intact values by use of the GSI value. Since it is actually the only failure criterion which accounts for the rock mass conditions in a systematic manner, the generalized H-B criterion finds many applications to the various rock engineering projects. Its nonlinear character, however, limits more active usage of this criterion. Accordingly, many attempts have been made to understand the generalized H-B condition in the framework of the M-C function. This study presents the closed-form expression relating the tangential cohesion to the tangential friction angle, which is derived by the non-dimensional stress transformation of the generalized H-B criterion. By use of the derived equation, it is investigated how the relationship between the tangential cohesion and friction angle of the generalized H-B criterion varies with the quality of rock masses. When only the variation of GSI value is considered, it is found that the tangential friction angle decreases with the increase of GSI, while the tangential cohesion increases with GSI value.

The high unemployment rate is one of the major problems in most countries nowadays. Hence, the demand for small area labor statistics has rapidly increased over the past few years. However, since sample surveys for producing official statistics are mainly designed for large areas, it is difficult to produce reliable statistics at the small area level due to small sample sizes. Most of existing studies about the small area estimation are related with the estimation of parameters based on cross-sectional data. By the way, since many official statistics are repeatedly collected at a regular interval of time, for instance, monthly, quarterly, or yearly, we need an alternative model which can handle this type of panel data. In this paper, we derive the generalized kernel estimating equation which can model time-dependency among response variables and handle repeated measurement or panel data. We compare the proposed estimating equation with the generalized linear model and the generalized estimating equation through simulation, and apply it to estimating the unemployment rates of 25 areas in Gyeongsangnam-do and Ulsan for 2005.
The process-based XBeach model has numerous empirical parameters because of insufficient understanding of hydrodynamics and sediment transport on the nearshore; hence, it is necessary to calibrate parameters to apply to various study areas and wave conditions. Therefore, the calibration process of parameters is essential for the improvement of model performance. Generally, the trial-and-error method is widely used; however, this method is passive and limited to various and comprehensive parameter ranges. In this study, the Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) method was used to estimate the optimal range of three parameters (gamma, facua, and gamma2) using morphological field data collected in Maengbang beach during the four typhoons that struck from September to October 2019. The model performance and optimal range of empirical parameters were evaluated using Brier Skill Score (BSS) along with the baseline profiles, sensitivity, and likelihood density analysis of BSS in the GLUE tools. Accordingly, the optimal parameter combinations were derived when facua was less than 0.15 and simulated well the shifting shape, from crescentic sand bar to alongshore uniform sand bars in the surf zone of Maengbang beach after storm impact. However, the erosion and accretion patterns nearby in the surf zone and shoreline remain challenges in the XBeach model.
In the design stage of a tunnel, the wall convergence is commonly estimated through an elasto-plastic analysis of the tunnel, which has been a topic drawing many researcher's attention so far. Despite its importance, however, the elasto-plastic behavior of a circular tunnel excavated in a generalized Hoek-Brown rockmass is still poorly understood. In this study, a simple munerical method based on Lee & Pietruszczak (2008) for the elasto-plastic analysis of a circular tunnel surrounded by reinforced annulus is proposed. It is assumed that the tunnel is excavated in a strain-softening rockmass obeying the generalized Hoek-Brown failure condition. The commercial code FLAC is used for the verification of the proposed method. The influence of the Hoek-Brown strength parameter a and the thickness of the reinforcement annulus on the elasto-plastic behavior around the tunnel was discussed by conducting some example analyses. The results show that the influence of these two parameters on the distribution of stresses and displacements is substantial.

Attempts have been made to define new classes of distributions that provide more flexibility for modelling skewed data in practice. In this work we define a new extension of the generalized gamma distribution (Stacy, The Annals of Mathematical Statistics, 33, 1187-1192, 1962) for Marshall-Olkin generalized gamma (MOGG) distribution, based on the generator pioneered by Marshall and Olkin (Biometrika, 84, 641-652, 1997). This new lifetime model is very flexible including twenty one special models. The main advantage of the new family relies on the fact that practitioners will have a quite flexible distribution to fit real data from several fields, such as engineering, hydrology and survival analysis. Further, we also define a MOGG mixture model, a modification of the MOGG distribution for analyzing lifetime data in presence of cure fraction. This proposed model can be seen as a model of competing causes, where the parameter associated with the Marshall-Olkin distribution controls the activation mechanism of the latent risks (Cooner et al., Statistical Methods in Medical Research, 15, 307-324, 2006). The asymptotic properties of the maximum likelihood estimation approach of the parameters of the model are evaluated by means of simulation studies. The proposed distribution is fitted to two real data sets, one arising from measuring the strength of fibers and the other on melanoma data.
In decades, active sonar, which transmits signals and detects incident signals reflected by underwater targets, has been significantly studied since passive sonar in Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) detection performance becomes lowered, as underwater threats become their radiated noise reduced. In general, active sonar using Hull-Mounted Sonar (HMS) adjusts vertical tilt (depression) and sequentially transmits multiple Linear Frequency Modulation (LFM) subpulses which have non-overlapped bands, i. e. 1 kHz ~ 2 kHz, 2 kHz ~ 3 kHz, in order to reduce shadow zones. Recently, however, Generalized SFM (GSFM), which is generalized form of SFM, is proposed, and it is confirmed that subpulses of GSFM have orthogonality among each other depending on setting of GSFM parameters. Hence, in this paper, we applied GSFM to active target detection using HMS to improve the performance by the signal processing gain obtained from enlarged bandwidths of GSFM subpulses compared to those of LFM subpulses. Through simulation, we verified that when the number of subpulses is three, the matched filter gain of GSFM is approximately 5 dB higher than that of LFM.
Flood planning needs to recognize trends for extreme precipitation events. Especially, the r-year return level is a common measure for extreme events. In this paper, we present a nonstationary temporal model for precipitation return levels using a hierarchical Bayesian modeling. For intensity, we model annual maximum daily precipitation measured in Korea with a generalized extreme value (GEV). The temporal dependence among the return levels is incorporated to the model for GEV model parameters and a linear model with autoregressive error terms. We apply the proposed model to precipitation data collected from various stations in Korea from 1973 to 2011.
Engineering structures in operation essentially belong to time-varying or nonlinear structures and the resultant response signals are usually non-stationary. For such time-varying structures, it is of great importance to extract time-dependent dynamic parameters from non-stationary response signals, which benefits structural health monitoring, safety assessment and vibration control. However, various traditional signal processing methods are unable to extract the embedded meaningful information. As a newly developed technique, variational mode decomposition (VMD) shows its superiority on signal decomposition, however, it still suffers two main problems. The foremost problem is that the number of modal components is required to be defined in advance. Another problem needs to be addressed is that VMD cannot effectively separate non-stationary signals composed of closely spaced or overlapped modes. As such, a new method named generalized adaptive variational modal decomposition (GAVMD) is proposed. In this new method, the number of component signals is adaptively estimated by an index of mean frequency, while the generalized demodulation algorithm is introduced to yield a generalized VMD that can decompose mode overlapped signals successfully. After that, synchrosqueezing wavelet transform (SWT) is applied to extract instantaneous frequencies (IFs) of the decomposed mono-component signals. To verify the validity and accuracy of the proposed method, three numerical examples and a steel cable with time-varying tension force are investigated. The results demonstrate that the proposed GAVMD method can decompose the multi-component signal with overlapped modes well and its combination with SWT enables a successful IF extraction of each individual component.
The objective of this study was to analyze the flood stage considering the uncertainty caused by the river roughness coefficients and discharge. The methodology of this study involved the GLUE (Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation) to quantify the uncertainty bounds applying three different storm events. The uncertainty range of the roughness was 0.025~0.040. In case of discharge, the uncertainty stemmed from parameters in stage-discharge rating curve, if h represents stage for discharge Q, which can be written as $Q=A(h-B)^C$. Parameters in rating curve (A, B and C) were estimated by non-linear regression model and assumed by t distribution. The range of parameters in rating curve was 5.138~18.442 for A, -0.524~0.104 for B and 2.427~2.924 for C. By sampling 10,000 parameter sets, Monte Carlo simulations were performed. The simulated stage value was represented by 95% confidence interval. In storm event 1~3, the average bound was 0.39 m, 0.83 m and 0.96 m, respectively. The peak bound was 0.52 m, 1.36 m and 1.75 m, respectively. The recurrence year of each storm event applying the frequency analysis was 1-year, 10-year and 25-year, respectively.
Implementing the generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion in the framework of the Mohr-Coulomb criterion requires the calculation of the equivalent friction angle and cohesion. In the conventional method based on the Balmer (1952)'s theory, the tangential instantaneous friction angle and cohesion are expressed in terms of the minimum principal stress ${\sigma}_3$, which does not provide the information about the dependency of the equivalent parameters on the hydrostatic pressure and the stress path. In this study, this defect of the conventional method has been overcome by representing the equivalent parameters in terms of stress invariants. Through the example implementation of the new method, the influence of the magnitude of the hydrostatic pressure and the Lode angle on the tangential instantaneous friction angle and cohesion is investigated. It turns out that the tangential instantaneous friction angle is maximum when the stress condition is triaxial extension, while the tangential cohesion is maximum when the stress condition is triaxial compression. The dependency of the equivalent Mohr-Coulomb strength parameters on the hydrostatic pressure and the Lode angle tends to be more substantial for the favorable rockmass of larger GSI value.
