  • This article looks back and also looks forward at the values aspect of school mathematics teaching and learning. Looking back, it draws on existing academic knowledge to explain why the values construct has been regarded in recent writings as a conative variable, that is, associated with willingness and motivation. The discussion highlights the tripartite model of the human mind which was first conceptualised in the eighteenth century, emphasising the intertwined and mutually enabling processes of cognition, affect, and conation. The article also discusses what we already know about the nature of values, which suggests that values are both consistent and malleable. The trend in mathematics educational research into values over the last three decades or so is outlined. These allow for an updated definition of values in mathematics education to be offered in this article. Considering the categories of values that might be found in mathematics classrooms, an argument is also made for more attention to be paid to general educational values. After all, the potential of the values construct in mathematics education research extends beyond student understanding of and performance in mathematics, to realising an ethical mathematics education which is important for thriveability in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Looking ahead, then, this article outlines a 4-step values development approach for implementation in the classroom, involving Justifying, Essaying, Declaring, and Identifying. With an acronym of JEDI, this novel approach has been informed by the theories of 'saying is believing', self-persuasion, insufficient justification, and abstract construals.

  • In this paper, it is aimed to determine the stochastic response of a suspension bridge subjected to spatially varying ground motions considering the geometric nonlinearity. Bosphorus Suspension Bridge built in Turkey and connects Europe to Asia in Istanbul is selected as a numerical example. The spatial variability of the ground motion is considered with the incoherence, wave-passage and site-response effects. The importance of site-response effect which arises from the difference in the local soil conditions at different support points of the structure is also investigated. At the end of the study, mean of the maximum and variance response values obtained from the spatially varying ground motions are compared with those of the specialised cases of the ground motion model. It is seen that each component of the spatially varying ground motion model has important effects on the dynamic behaviour of the bridge. The response values obtained from the general excitation case, which also includes the site-response effect causes larger response values than those of the homogeneous soil condition cases. The variance values calculated for the general excitation case are dominated by dynamic component at the deck and Asian side tower. The response values obtained for the site-response effect alone are larger than the response values obtained for the incoherence and wave-passage effects, separately. It can be concluded that suspension bridges are sensitive to the spatial variability of ground motion. Therefore, the incoherence, the wave-passage and especially the site-response effects should be considered in the stochastic analysis of this type of engineering structures.

  • Based on the multiple-time-scale (MTS) method, a general formula has been presented for solving an n-th, n = 2, 3, ${\ldots}$, order ordinary differential equation with strong linear damping forces. Like the solution of the unified Krylov-Bogoliubov-Mitropolskii (KBM) method or the general Struble's method, the new solution covers the un-damped, under-damped and over-damped cases. The solutions are identical to those obtained by the unified KBM method and the general Struble's method. The technique is a new form of the classical MTS method. The formulation as well as the determination of the solution from the derived formula is very simple. The method is illustrated by several examples. The general MTS solution reduces to its classical form when the real parts of eigen-values of the unperturbed equation vanish.

  • Purpose In this study, first, we try to make embedding results that reflect the characteristics of both professional and general documents. In addition, when disparate documents are put together as learning materials for natural language processing, we try to propose a method that can measure the degree of reflection of the characteristics of individual domains in a quantitative way. Approach For this study, the Korean Supreme Court Precedent documents and Korean Wikipedia are selected as specialized documents and general documents respectively. After extracting the most similar word pairs and similarities of unique words observed only in the specialized documents, we observed how those values were changed in the process of embedding with general documents. Findings According to the measurement methods proposed in this study, it was confirmed that the degree of specificity of specialized documents was relaxed in the process of combining with general documents, and that the degree of dissolution could have a positive correlation with the size of general documents.

  • Researchers have claimed that Korean younger speakers tend to less clearly differentiate aspirated and lax stops with VOT values while older speakers clearly differentiate these two stops with VOT values. To explain this phenomena, the current study consider both an aging effect and a general sound shift. For this study, VOT values and F0 of Korean stops produced by eight male speakers(years of birth were 1942 ~ 1952) analyzed using Praat. Their productions were compared with the values of participants whose year of birth were 1943 ~ 1952) in Silva(2006)'s research. Silva's research was conducted in 2004 using the same methods. The result shows that 2014's VOT gap between aspirated and lax stops and less F0 gap between aspirated and lax stops than those of 2004. When the F0 values related to physical conditions of the larynx is considered, it could be analyzed as the following: to distinguish the three-way phonation type clearly, older speakers depend on the VOT value more instead of F0 which they have difficulty to control.

  • GCM and scenario uncertainties are first investigated for 5 major watersheds (Han River, Paldang dam, Namhan River, Bukhan River and Imjin River watersheds). As a result of this study, it is found that CCSM3-based annual precipitation increases linearly with respect to the 10-year moving average values while CSIRO-based precipitation does not show much of trend. The results from annual DJF mean precipitation show a similar trend with respect to their 10-year moving average values. Both CCSM3- and CSIRO-based annual JJA mean precipitation do not show much of trend toward 21st century. In general, CCSM3-based precipitation values are slightly higher than CSIRO-based values with respect to their annual and annual JJA mean precipitation values, but CSIRO-based annual DJF mean precipitation values are slightly higher than CCSM3-based values. In case of mean air temperature between CCSM3 and CSIRO during 21st century, all of results show a clear trend in warming with the passage of time for 5 watersheds. However the upward trends from CCSM3-based values slow down toward end of 21stcentury while CSRIO-based values increases almost linearly.

  • Objectives : This study was to examine the social value of dental hygienists, their values about the health system and the relationship of all the related variables. Methods : The subjects in this study were 205 dental hygienists who worked in dental clinics and hospitals on Seoul. A survey was conducted from August 12 to October 15, 2010. The questionnaire consisted of nine items about general characteristics, two items about social values and 11 about values of the health system. The items related to social values and values of the health system were prepared by translating the items used in David et al's study, and the Cronbach alpha coefficient of those items respectively 0.80 and 0.76. Results : The dental hygienists got 3.94 in social values, which was above the average. In terms of values about the health care system, their values of the treatment delivery system(3.92) rated highest, followed by values of patient rights(3.79) and values of institutional restrictions(3.25). Their socal values had a closest positive correlation to their values of the treatment delivery system, and their values of patient rights had a strong positive correlation to those of the treatment delivery system and was positively correlated to those of institutional regulations as well. And there was a positive correlation between their values of the treatment delivery system and institutional regulations(r=.276). Conclusions : The above-mentioned findings illustrated that the social values of the dental hygienists had a positive correlation to their values of the health system. Therefore the kinds of educational programs that help dental hygienists to build their social values and values of the health system should be developed to improve their job efficiency as oral health experts.

  • A canonical correlation analysis(CCA)-based method is proposed for prediction of future climate change which combines information from ensembles of atmosphere-ocean general circulation models(AOGCMs) and observed climate values. This paper focuses on predictions of future climate on a regional scale which are of potential economic values. The proposed method is obtained by coupling the classical CCA with empirical orthogonal functions(EOF) for dimension reduction. Furthermore, we generate a distribution of climate responses, so that extreme events as well as a general feature such as long tails and unimodality can be revealed through the distribution. Results from real data examples demonstrate the promising empirical properties of the proposed approaches.
