  • Radioactive waste accepted to the repository of land disposal should have the capability of a safe isolation. To develop those requirements and evaluation techniques, the foreign criteria and the important characteristics, relevant to waste forms and management processes, were reviewed. Based on such studies as the evaluation techniques, “general acceptance criteria”that the radioactive waste forms generated in Korea should be met were suggested.

  • The most generalized form of the triadic operating policy for a controllable M/G/I queueing model is analyzed to obtain fundamental relations among the other forms of operating policies based on its corresponding expected busy period. Since it consists of three decision variables N, T and D, it could be possible to decompose into the simple, the dyadic and other forms of the triadic operating policies. The procedures to decompose the most generalized triadic policy into other forms of operating policies could provide a general methodology to identify each element associated with it.

  • An investigation was made for the added mass moment of inertia induced by the rotational motion of the cylinder with hull section on water in order to obtain the information to estimate the natural frequency of the torsional vibration of ships. The special consideration to the effect of the draught upon the added mass moment of inertia is taken into account in the study. In this paper, the general expression for the added mass coefficients of moment of inertia of arbitary two dimensional forms induced by the torsional vibration, was derived by the author. Hence, the coefficients for these forms are represented as functions of parameters, the section area coefficient and draft beam ratio, from which the added mass coefficients for arbitrary forms can be obtained. The result was shown in a chart for estimation of the added mass moment of inertia induced by the torsional vibration, as first trial, for the convenience of practical use.

  • Orbital interactions of the types, ${\sigma}-{\pi},\;{\sigma}^*-{\pi},\;{\sigma}-{\pi}^*\;and\;{\sigma}^*-{\pi}^*$ are investigated for the rotamers of ${\alpha}$-X-acetones (X = F and Cl) using STO-3G method of calculation. It was found that the interactions are possible only in gauche forms, and the ${\sigma}^*-{\pi}^*$ interactions are in general greater than the $\sigma-\pi$ interactions due to the greater overlap, in spite of the greater energy gap involved; the greater ${\sigma}^*-{\pi}^*$ interaction causes greater lowering of ${\pi}^*$ level relative to the lowering of ${\sigma}$ in the ${\sigma}-{\pi}$ interaction so that both ${\sigma}-{\pi}^*$ and $n-{\pi}^*$ interactions are enhanced in the gauche forms. The extra stability of the gauche form and the red shift in the $n-{\pi}^*$ transition are thus found to be natural corollaries of the greater ${\sigma}^*-{\pi}^*$ interaction in the gauche forms.

Asbestos is Still with Us: Repeat Call for a Universal Ban

  • All forms of asbestos are proven human carcinogens. All forms of asbestos cause malignant mesothelioma, lung, laryngeal, and ovarian cancers, and may cause gastrointestinal and other cancers. No exposure to asbestos is without risk, and there is no safe threshold of exposure to asbestos. Asbestos cancer victims die painful lingering deaths. These deaths are almost entirely preventable. When evidence of the carcinogenicity of asbestos became incontrovertible, concerned parties, including the Collegium Ramazzini, called for a universal ban on the mining, manufacture and use of asbestos in all countries around the world. Asbestos is now banned in 52 countries, and safer products have replaced many materials that once were made with asbestos. Nonetheless, a large number of countries still use, import, and export asbestos and asbestos-containing products. And still today in many countries that have banned other forms of asbestos, the so-called "controlled use" of chrysotile asbestos continues to be permitted, an exemption that has no basis in medical science but rather reflects the political and economic influence of the asbestos mining and manufacturing industry. To protect the health of all people in the world, industrial workers, construction workers, women and children, now and in future generations - the Collegium Ramazzini calls again today on all countries of the world, as we have repeatedly in the past, to join in the international endeavor to ban all forms of asbestos. An international ban on asbestos is urgently needed.

  • We study Dirichlet forms and the associated diffusion processes for the Gibbs measures related to the quantum unbounded spin systems (lattice boson systems) interacting via superstable and regular potentials. This work is a continuation of the author's previous study on the classical systems [LPY] to the quantum cases. In [LPY], we constructed Dirichlet forms and the associated diffusion processes for the Gibbs measures of classical unbounded spin systems. Furthermore, we also showed the essential self-adjointness of the Dirichlet operator and the log-Sobolev inequality for any Gibbs measure under appropriate conditions on the potentials. In this atudy we try to extend the results of the classical systems to the quantum cases. Because of some technical difficulties, we are only able to construct a Dirichlet form and the associated diffusion process for any Gibbs measure of the quantum systems. We utilize the general scheme of the previous work on the theory in infinite dimensional spaces [AH-K1-2, AKR, AR1-2, Kus, MR, Ro, Sch] and the ideas we employed in our study of the calssical systems ]LPY].

  • By applying various known summation theorems to a general transformation formula based upon Bailey's transformation theorem due to Slater, Exton has obtained numerous and new quadratic transformations involving hypergeometric functions of order greater than two(some of which have typographical errors). We aim at first deriving a general quadratic transformation formula due to Exton and next providing a list of quadratic formulas(including the corrected forms of Exton's results) and some more results.

  • Pilot and flight crew visual performance in general aviation aircraft operating is paramount for safe operation of the aircraft. Pilot compartment view, instrument and cockpit lighting forms an essential aspect of this visual performance, and therefore warrants guidance and standardization. This study introduces acceptable design criteria for pilot compartment view, instrument and cockpit illumination for general aviation aircraft.

  • In this paper, we study two functional equations with two unknown functions from an Abelian group into a commutative ring without zero divisors. The two equations are generalizations of Swiatak's functional equations with an involution. We determine the general solutions of the two functional equations and the properties of the general solutions of the two functional equations under three different hypotheses, respectively. For one of the functional equations, we establish the Hyers-Ulam stability in the case that the unknown functions are complex valued.

  • Minor erosional forms in the bedrock river, like potholes, are not just research subject for the professional geomorphologis. In addition, these features attract general public and make them understand the social contribution and importance of geomorphologic research activities. In this paper, the studies on bedrock minor forms in Korea was reviewed. For further researches, some of major erosional processes and minor forms in bedrock rivers were discussed in detail. Cavitation, plucking, hydro-wedging, and abrasion by passing sediment particles are the major processes to create the longitudinal or transverse minor forms like pothole, furrows, flutes, and runnels. Especially the definition of furrows and runnels are explained to prevent the confusion with pothole, weathering pits and grooves. To make a progress in research on bedrock minor forms the quantitative relationship between the variables should be studied. New techniques for scientific estimation of erosion rates and exposure ages of bedrock surfaces should be used in this field.
