  • Objectives : Proper acupuncture stimulation is associated with a characteristic set of sensation usually referred to as 'De-Qi'. In order to develop the appropriate sham acupuncture, various sensations to each stimulation should be considered through analysis of the profiles of acupuncture sensation. It was therefore investigated to compare the acupuncture sensation scale (ASS) of two types of sham acupuncture to that of the real acupuncture. Methods : Ninety-four participants (mean age 26.4, range 26-49) were asked to complete five point-Likert scale ASS developed by Vincent et al. after real or two-kinds of sham acupuncture stimulation: blunted tip sham acupuncture (BT) and round tip sham acupuncture (RT). Needling was done at LI4 acupoint on non-dominant hand and stimulated for 30 seconds with real or two-kinds of sham needle. Finger withdrawal latency (FWL) of each group was also measured to evaluate the pain sensitivity to noxious heat stimuli. Results : BT acupuncture significantly less produced penetrating, numb, intense, hurting, pulling, shock, tingling, throbbing sensation than real acupuncture stimulation. RT acupuncture significantly less produced penetrating, burning, electric, numb, intense, hurting, pulling, aching, shasharp, shock, stinging, tingling, throbbing sensation than real acupuncture. Each group did not demonstrate the differences of pain sensitivity to noxious stimuli. Conclusions : These results indicated that types of tip of acupuncture produced different kinds of acupuncture sensation. Our finding provides a general information of sensations to two kinds of sham acupuncture for development of ideal placebo sham needle.

  • Objective: To evaluate the treatment effect of Bee-venom Acupuncture on Neck Pain, which is well known for anti-inflammatory effect and function of activating immune system. Methods : We investigated 22 cases of patients with Neck Pain induced by soft tissue injury. One group was treated by Bee-venom Acupuncture therapy (Bee-venom Acupuncture Group :BA), the other group was treated by General Acupuncture therapy (None Bee-venom Acupuncture Group :GA). We evaluated the treatment effect of each group by few statistical analysis such as frequency analysis, Mann Whitney U test and spearman correlation analysis. Results : 1. In the age distribution of both groups, we found the highest frequency at the interval 35 to 45 years old. And in the number of medical treatment, Both groups show the highest frequency at the interval of less than four times. 2. BA was significantly decreased in VAS and clinical grade compared with GA. 3. We found significant correlation between period and number of treatment. So did we between VAS and clinical grade. Conclusion : As a result of thorough investigation, we could come to a conclusion that Bee-venom Acupuncture Group might have a notable effect on VAS and clinic grade.

The aim of this study was to report the effect of acupuncture for prevention of PONV in children. Material and Method : Randomized clinical trials retrieved by a search of articles indexed on the Medline and NDSL database. Key words to search were 'PONV', 'POV', 'acupuncture', 'children', 'pediatric'. Results : Eleven articles were selected and six of them showed significant effectiveness of acupuncture in preventing PONV in children. Acupuncture methods were needle acupuncture acupressure, electro-acupuncture, laser acupuncture, acupuncture point injection. The main acupuncture point was P6(Neiguan). • Background and Objectives: Nocturnal enuresis is a common problem that can be troubling for children and their families. Treatment options include nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic measures. Various nonpharmacologic treatments have been shown to have a positive effect on bed-wetting in small studies but have not been extensively evaluated (generally weak strength of evidence). This study was undertaken to determine if there is any evidence for the clinical efficacy of acupuncture for treatment of nocturnal enuresis. Methods : Author conducted a computerized literature search in following database: Medline(via Pubmed), NDSL. There were no restrictions on the language of publication. The data were extracted in a standardized, predefined manner and assessed critically. Results : 4 article was selected. Acupuncture is composed of general acupuncture, electro, laser. Acupuncture treatment of the children had significantly more dry night than before treatment Conclusion : Alternative, nonpharmacological approach using acupuncture works in children with monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis.

  • Background : One of the characteristics of acupuncture, a popular modality for treating musculoskeletal pain, is a plurality in diagnosis and treatment that can profoundly influence the treatment outcome. This multiplicity in treatment modality has to be considered in any research on the effectiveness of acupuncture. Many practitioners stress the necessity for individualized patient treatment, including acupuncture point selection and manipulation technique. However, the importance of individualization in acupuncture treatment, compared with standardization, has received little attention in clinical trials. The aim of the future study described here is therefore to compare the effectiveness of individualized acupuncture for knee osteoarthritis with standardized acupuncture and no acupuncture in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Methods : A total of 195 patients aged 50 years and over with knee pain, will be randomly divided into three treatment groups: individualized acupuncture, standardized acupuncture, and waiting list. Outcome data will be collected through patient.completed questionnaires before randomization, and at 4, 8 and 12 weeks after randomization. The questionnaires will be investigated demographic details as well as information on pain, movement and function of the affected knee, general health and quality of life. Discussion : This paper presents details on the rationale, design, and methods of the trial.

  • Objective : Blepharoptosis is drooping of eyelid which causes impairment of visual field by covering partially or completely, and it is classified into congenital ptosis and acquired one. In western medicine, idiopathic blepharoptosis is usually treated by tarsectomy. Contrary to that concept, we consider eyelid is assigned to Yookryoon(肉輪) among Ohryoon(五輪) which matches to spleen. In oriental medicine, it can be treated by promoting spleen and kidney. Here I report two cases of idiopathic blepharoptosis improved by conservative acupuncture therapy and herb medicine. Methods : The changes in clinical symptoms of general body weakness, anorexia, dizziness, dry eye, etc, in degree of eyelid drooping and in individual expression were described as they were treated with acupuncture therapy, herb medicine, Bojoong-ikgi-tang(補中益氣湯) and some physical therapy including Negative, I.C.T, S.S.P and Carbon. Results : Symptoms(ex) general body weakness, anorexia, dizziness, dry eye, etc) at admission improved and disappeared gradually with acupuncture therapy and herb medicine. The patients could discharge with favorable recovery. Conclusions : In oriental medicine, blepharoptosis is mainly treated by promoting Qihyul(氣血) and enhancing flow of that. If the patient has deficiency of Suhnchun-poomboo(先天稟褓賦) and Mungmoon-hwa(命門火), he is treated by promoting Shin-yang(腎陽). If he is weak in Bee-qi(脾氣), he needs to be treated by strengthening Bee-yang(脾陽) where patient with lack of Ganhyul(肝血) is supposed to be treated by promoting Hyul(血). These following two cases were managed by acupuncture, herb medicine and physical therapy on idiopathic blepharoptosis.
