Reducing Effects of Black Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Extract on Body Fat Weight in Ovariectomized Rats (난소절제 흰쥐에서 흑미 호분층 추출물의 체지방 감소 효과)

  • Estrogen deficiency is associated with increased body weight and fat mass, resulting in obesity-associated complications such as insulin resistance, cardiovascular disease, and type-2 diabetes. The present study was performed to investigate the effect of black rice (Oryza sativa L.) extracts (BRE) on body weight and fat mass in ovariectomized rats. Ovariectomized (or sham-operated) rats were randomly blocked into three groups (n=8~10 per group): sham operated group (S), ovariectomized control group (OVX), and ovariectomized group with BRE 30 mg/kg B.W. (BRE). High fat diet (fat calories 45%) was fed to all experimental rats for 12 weeks. Final body weight, weight gain, and body fat weight showed significant increases in the OVX group, whereas they were reduced by BRE supplementation. Serum TAG, T-chol level, and adipocyte size were not significantly different among the three groups. However, ovariectomy-induced hepatic steatosis was improved in BRE-treated group. Moreover, in the BRE group, serum leptin levels was significantly lower and fecal total lipid concentrations was significantly higher compared to the OVX group. The gathered data suggest that BRE is a potentially useful ingredient to protect against estrogen deficiency-related obesity and its related diseases.

Antimicrobial and Antioxidant Effects of Functional Healthy Drinks from Some Medicinal Herbs and Coffee Mixture (약용식물과 커피 혼합물로부터 기능성 건강음료의 항균 및 항산화 효과)

  • In this study, our investigated the antioxidant activities and compared other bioassay including anti-microbial, antifungal activities and total polyphenol contents of functional healthy drinks from some medicinal herbs and coffee mixture. The kind of medicinal herbs, chaga mushroom (Inonatus obliqurs), moringa (Moringa Oleifera), gravila (Anona muricata), mulberry (Morus alba), Dioscoreaceae (Dioscorea quinquelaba), Berberidaceae (Epimedii Herba), Asteraceae (Artemisia capillaries) and siberian ginseng (Acanthopanax senticous,). The functional healthy drinks, named C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6 and C7 were summered in Table 1. The in vitro antimicrobial activity was examined against Gram positive bacteria, Gram negative bacteria and a fungus. The functional healthy drinks were broad spectrum of anti-microbial activity without antifungal activity against Candida albicans KCTC7965. In particularly, the C7 showed strong activity against Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus CCARM3089, CCARM 3115 and CCARM3561. And, the C7 showed 88% of free radical scavenging effect on 0.5 mg/ml using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. Functional healthy drink C7 was mulberry extracts from Morus alba, chaga mushroom from Inonatus obliqurs and moringa from Moringa olifera in additionally coffee extracts. Its results confirm that the potential use of mulberry extracts as a good source of antibacterial compounds or as a health promoting food and health drinks.

Effect of Multifaceted Intervention Program on Multi-Dimensional Psychologic Condition, Empowerment, Work Readiness, and Functional Capacity in Industrially Injured Workers (다면재활프로그램이 산업재해근로자의 다차원 심리상태, 역량강화, 직업복귀준비 및 작업능력에 미치는 효과)

  • This study examined the effects of a multifaceted intervention program on the psychological condition, empowerment, work readiness, and functional capacity for job performance of industrially injured workers. Twelve injured workers in C hospital were included in this study. The subjects participated in a social rehabilitation program 2 hours a day, twice a week, for 8 weeks in total, as well as a work hardening program 3 to 4 hours a day, 5 times a week, for 8 weeks in total. The study was conducted from March to September, 2017. A multi-dimensional psychological examination, empowerment scale, work readiness interview and functional capacity evaluation were conducted and the test scores compared before and after the program with the Wilcoxon signed rank test. In the multi-dimensional psychological examination, there were significant differences in the levels of anxiety, depression, lack of social support, and somatization symptoms (p<.05) except anger. The participants also showed significant differences in the empowerment scale, work readiness scale, and functional capacity evaluation. This study suggests that a multifaceted intervention program can be effective in improving the psychologic condition, empowerment, work readiness, and functional capacity of industrially injured workers and, in turn, may improve their rate of returning to work.

Inhibition Effect against the Rat Blood Plasma Oxidation of the $Makgeolli$ ($Takju$) Korean Rice Wine (막걸리(탁주)의 쥐 혈장 과산화물 생성 억제효과)

  • The antioxidant activities of $makgeolli$ and other alcoholic beverages were compared. Based on the same volume (70 ${\mu}L$ eq.) of the alcoholic beverages, the 2,2'-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid ammonium salt) (ABTS+) radical-scavenging activities were as follows: whisky > $makgeolli$ crude extract (MCE) > rice wine (RW) > clarified $makgeolli$ (CM) > soju. Based on the same alcohol concentration (6%) of the alcoholic beverages, however, $makgeolli$ showed the highest activity. In addition, based on the same volume (70 ${\mu}L$ eq.), the inhibition effects against the formation of cholesteryl ester hydroperoxide (CE-OOH) were as follows: soju > whisky > RW > MCE > CM. Based on the same alcohol concentration (6%), however, the inhibition effects against the formation of CE-OOH were as follows: RW > MCE > soju > whisky > CM. Therefore, it was suggested that $makgeolli$ may contain radical-scavenging- and metal-ion-chelate-type antioxidants and may increase the antioxidant activity in the blood.

Methods to improve infant clothing made with Hanji yarn - Investigating the image of Hanji and Hanji yarn infant clothing - (한지사 영·유아복 개선 방안 모색을 위한 연구 - 한지와 한지사 영·유아복 이미지 조사를 중심으로 -)

  • With environmental pollution becoming a serious problem, recently there has been increased interest in the environment and health. In addition, the development of materials for environmentally friendly and functional clothing has increased. Environmentally friendly products that use bark fibers of the mulberry(dak) tree are expressed in terms of dak fiber and Hanji yarn. This research analyzed consumer's perceived images of Hanji and Hanji yarn infant clothing. The research results are as follows. Based on analyzing images of Hanji and Hanji yarn, Hanji was categorized into four images that can be described as natural, pure, decorative, and functional, and Hanji yarn infant clothing was categorized into three images that can be described as natural, decorative, and functional. Based on the analysis of well-being elements in subjects' lifestyles, the following four inclinations were found: environmental friendliness, pursuit of novelty, life care, and environmental protection. On this basis, the subjects were categorized into three groups: the trend-pursuing group, the life-care group, and the social responsibility group. Subjects' perceived images of Hanji and Hanji yarn infant clothing were investigated, and these products were found to have a strong image of being Korean, traditional, and natural, while being weakly perceived as comfortable, functional, and practical. Analyzing the correlation between images of Hanji and Hanji yarn infant clothing and lifestyle groups revealed that these products were not perceived differently according to group. This study showed that Hanji and Hanji yarn are terms that are commonly associated with positive clothing material. However, both Hanji and Hanji yarn are perceived negatively in terms of functional image, which is an important factor in clothing material. In addition, even among consumers who pursue a lifestyle based on well-being, the functional image of Hanji yarn was not perceived highly. Hence, it is necessary to further examine the effect of terms such as Hanji and Hanji yarn on consumer choices. Therefore, caution is considered needed when using such terms in the marketing of related products.

A Study on the Structural Relationship between Benefit, Consumer-Brand Relationship and Brand Attachment (제품 편익과 소비자-브랜드 관계 및 브랜드 애착, 구전 간의 구조적 관계에 관한 연구)

  • This paper planned to review positively the influence of leading variables - Functional benefits, Emotional benefits, Self-expressive benefits over Consumer-brand relationship, and the structural relationship between Consumer-brand relationship and Brand attachment, Word-of-mouse. For it, we verified our hypothesis utilizing Hierarchial chi-square analysis that was available to statistically verify the size between 2 paths out of Structural models As the result of research, Emotional benefits was more influential than Functional benefits in the formation of Consumer-brand relationship. Additionally, the influential difference between Emotional benefits and Self-expressive benefits was not found in the formation of Consumer-brand relationship. In other words, both Emotional benefits and Functional benefits were proved to have a positive influence on forming Consumer-brand relationship. On the other hand, Self expressive benefits played a more influential role than Functional benefit in the formation of Consumer-brand relationship. The fact was also proved that the higher the formation level of Consumer -brand relationship was, the greater positive influence over Brand attachment and Word-of-mouse Through the above results, it is more desirable to establish brand strategy for forming Consumer-brand relationship through Emotional benefits and Self expressive benefits rather than Functional benefits. Additionally, the Consumer-brand relationship formed by Value benefit is expected not only to get the level of attachment, showing like love, toward the brand deeper, but also to achieve the effect of positive, long term communication through voluntary Word-of-mouse.

Determination of Glycyrrhizic Acid Content and Anti-Diabetic Effect of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Depending on Cultivation Region (재배지역별 감초의 Glycyrrhizic Acid 함량 분석과 항당뇨 효능 평가)

  • This study investigated the glycyrrhizic acid content and anti-diabetic activities of Glycyrrhiza uralensis (GU) depending on the cultivation region (Jecheon, Youngju, Gokseong, China, and Uzbekistan). Glycyrrhizic acid accuracy recovery and intra- and inter-day precisions (RSD%) of the method were calculated at 99.10~107.07% and 3.92 and 6.31% for GU samples, respectively, whereas the limits of detection and quantitation were 0.14 and $0.20{\mu}g/mL$. Anti-diabetic activity was measured by ${\alpha}-glucosidase$ and glucose uptake. GU (20 g) was extracted with 70% ethanol at $70^{\circ}C$ for 6 h. The Jecheon and Gokseong GU showed good inhibitory activity compared to the control. The Jecheon, Youngju, and Uzbekistan GU ethanol extracts ($100{\mu}g/mL$) showed glucose uptakes (in $C_2C_{12}$ myotube) of 124.19, 127.18, and 126.92%, respectively, compared to the positive control. In conclusion, these methods were validated for detection of glycyrrhizic acid in GU, and the results indicate that GU might have potential anti-diabetic activities.

In Vitro Screening for Anti-Dementia Activities of Seaweed Extracts (해조류 추출물의 In Vitro 항치매 활성)

  • We investigated that methanolic extracts of 20 kinds of seaweeds from Jeju Island for their antioxidant activities, acetylcholinesterase and ${\beta}$-secretase inhibitory activities, and neuronal survival in order to evaluate their potentials as anti-dementia agents. Ecklonia cava extracts had the highest total polyphenol content among the 20 seaweed extracts. The antioxidant activity of seaweed extracts was measured by using 2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assay. It was found that Ecklonia kurome extracts had the highest ABTS scavenging activity ($IC_{50}=0.07{\pm}0.01mg/mL$). As a result, Ecklonia cava, Ecklonia kurome, and Myelophycus simplex extracts were found to be the most effective in terms of acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity. In the ${\beta}$-secretase activity assay, Ecklonia cava and Ecklonia kurome extracts were effectively inhibited ($84.41{\pm}1.70%$ and $81.17{\pm}2.43%$, respectively). As expected, neuronal cell death induced by $H_2O_2$ in SH-SY5Y cells was diminished by Ecklonia cava, Ecklonia kurome, and Sargassum yezoense extracts. Taken together, these results showed that Ecklonia cava extract has potential anti-dementia activity, which suggests that it might provide an effective strategy for improving dementia.

Effect of E-beam Radiation with Acid Drenching on Surface Properties of Pitch-based Carbon Fibers (산 담지 전자선 조사가 피치계 탄소섬유의 표면특성에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, pitch-based carbon fibers in the acid were radiated with an electron beam to modify their surface, and surface changes were investigated according to each treatment conditions. Nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide were used as a drenched acidic solution and an electron beam dose was set to 200 and 400 kGy. The use of nitric acid introduced more oxygen functional groups on carbon fiber surfaces than that of using hydrogen peroxide, and also introduced nitrogen functional groups into the carbon fiber surface. In addition, oxygen functional groups introduced on carbon fiber surface increased as the electron beam dose increased due to the fact that the oxidizing material can be easily formed by e-beam radiation in nitric acid than the hydrogen peroxide, and also the higher energy electron beam dose can help forming more oxidizing materials. Moreover, the generation of C=O functional groups was favorable when using nitric acid because oxidizing C-OH functional groups to the C=O functional groups mainly occurred by $NO_2$ radicals generated by the electron beam radiation in a nitric acid solution.

Weed Control Technology with Low Concentration Ethanol in Protected Cereal Crop Cultivation (비닐하우스 내 조 재배시 저농도 에탄올을 이용한 잡초억제 효과)

  • Weed control is of fundamental importance when planting cereal crops, particularly during the establishment phase. Weeds compete for nutrients, water and light, and can severely threaten the survival and early growth of newly planted crops. Field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of ethanol treatment on the weed control efficacy in cereal crops in protected vinylhouse. Five treatments like water, 25 L, 50 L, 75 L, and 100 L per $m^{-2}$ at 2% ethanol were applied and covered with vinyl on 10 days before foxtail millet seeding. After that, foxtail millet seeds were sown on June 20 at $60{\times}10cm$ planting distance and weed control efficacy was recorded at 30, and 50 days after seeding based on the dry weight. Soil oxidation-reduction potential was recorded -200~-400 mV after treatment 2 days. Weed control efficacy of at 75 L, and 100 L per $m^{-2}$ was observed 92%, 84% in 2% ETOH, respectively. Yields of foxtail millet at 75 L, and 100 L per $m^{-2}$ were 1,570 kg $ha^{-1}$, 1,230 kg $ha^{-1}$, respectively.
