  • This paper presents performance evaluation of an Integrated Starter-Alternator (ISA) prototype with an Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM) synchronous machine under sensor-less operation. To attain a high starting torque at zero speed and in subsequent extremely low speed range, a hybrid signal injection method is proposed. At higher speed, an improved stator flux observer is used for the stator flux estimation. This observer is able to produce accurately-estimated stator flux linkage for high performance Direct Torque and Flux Control (DTFC) implementation. The sensor-less DTFC IPM synchronous machine drive takes full advantage of the capacity of the power converter and fulfills the control specifications for the ISA. The trajectory control algorithm responds rapidly and in a well behaved manner over a wide range of operating conditions. The experimental results verify the feasibility and advantages of the system.

  • This study examines the influence of fluctuating daylight illuminance on daylight dimming control systems. Field measurements were performed for a full-scale mocked-up model under various daylight conditions in winter. Fluctuating ranges for a partially-shielded photosensor were great when the variation of sky ratio was great. When solar altitude was lower the illuminance and fluctuating range of illuminance were great due to the influence of direct components of daylight and the interrefelction between surfaces in rear area of space. It implies that daylight dimming system would not function effectively, unless the desktop illuminance by daylight is enough. Fluctuation ranges of photosensor illuminance were lower than 50 lx under clear sky conditions, but they were greater than 100 lx under partly-cloudy sky conditions. It means that the fluctuation range of electric light output of lighting fixture would greater under the partly-cloudy conditions and cause potential visual annoyance to occupants. Outdoor vertical illuminance reaching the windows would be an effective factor that can be used to predict the fluctuation of photosensor signals for effective controls of daylight dimming system.

  • Semi-active devices use the building's own motion to produce resistive forces and are thus strictly dissipative and require little power. Devices that independently control the binary open/closed valve state can enable novel device hysteresis loops that were not previously possible. However, some device hysteresis loops cannot be obtained without active analog valve control allowing slower, controlled release of stored energy, and is presents an ongoing limitation in obtaining the full range of possibilities offered by these devices. This in silico study develops a proportional-derivative feedback control law using a validated nonlinear device model to track an ideal diamond-shaped force-displacement response profile using active analog valve control. It is validated by comparison to the ideal shape for both sinusoidal and random seismic input motions. Structural application specific spectral analysis compares the performance for the non-linear, actively controlled case to those obtained with an ideal, linear model to validate that the potential performance will be retained when considering realistic nonlinear behaviour and the designed valve control approach. Results show tracking of the device force-displacement loop to within 3-5% of the desired ideal curve. Valve delay, rather than control law design, is the primary limiting factor, and analysis indicates a ratio of valve delay to structural period must be 1/10 or smaller to ensure adequate tracking, relating valve performance to structural period and overall device performance under control. Overall, the results show that active analog feedback control of energy release in these devices can significantly increase the range of resetable, valve-controlled semi-active device performance and hysteresis loops, in turn increasing their performance envelop and application space.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to examine the effects of abdominal meridian(Kyongrak) massage on menstrual cramps and dysmenorrhea. Method: Eighty-five women (of 110 screened) enrolled in this study and were employed full-time with more than 6.0 points(in $0\~10.0$ VAS scale) in menstrual cramps or more than 20 points on the dysmenorrhea scale(range $13\~52$). The forty-two participants in the experimental group received abdominal meridian massage for 5 minutes per day during 6 days from the fifth day before menstruation to the first day of menstruation and the forty-three participants in the control group didn't receive any treatment. Data were collected from June 1st to August 30th, 2003 and analyzed using descriptive statistics, $x^2-test$, and t-test. Result: Menstrual cramps and dysmenorrhea of the experimental group were significantly lower after abdominal meridian massage than those of the control group (p<.001). Conclusion: Abdominal meridian(Kyongrak) massage was very effective for relief of menstrual cramps and dysmenorrhea. Therefore, we suggest that abdominal Kyongrak massage can be a useful nursing intervention for women with menstrual cramps or dysmenorrhea.

  • This paper presents a steady-state operation analysis of full-bridge series-resonant inverters focusing on the distorted load current due to low-quality-factor resonant circuits in induction heating and other applications. The regions of operation based on the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) and non-zero-voltage switching (NON-ZVS) operations of the asymmetrical voltage-cancellation control technique are identified. The effects of a distorted load current under a wide range of output powers are also analyzed for achieving a precise ZVS operating region. An experimental study is performed with a 1kW prototype. Simulation and experimental studies have confirmed the validity of the proposed method. An efficiency comparison between the variable frequency method and the conventional fixed-frequency method is provided.

  • Building costs means capital costs which include cost of land, costs of acquiring and preparing the site, construction costs, professional fees, furnishings, cost of financing the project. and cost of management required to run and maintenance the building for use. There are several phases that determine the building costs : design phase, construction phase, and operation & maintenance phase. So, the cost of work could be set against the examining the full range of complexities that a building program might contain. To solve this problem, it needs to compute building cost systematically. This is still in the development stage, awaiting the organization of rational cost data base. The method of cost saving by cost control could be constituted by detailed knowledge of building costs for all possible combinations of components and subsystems that can be assembled into integration model of cost factor on each phase of project development. The model of cost saving in each building phase is available for procedures of cost control of building systems.

  • An improved tandem time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer for the photodissociation (PD) study of ions generated by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI), MALDI-TOF-PD-TOF, has been designed and constructed. Recording a full spectrum with better than unit mass resolution even in low mass range has been achieved without reflectron voltage stepping which was needed in the previous version. Other aspects of the improvement, such as those in the data system which now allow 10-100 times faster spectral acquisition than with the previous instrument, are described. Rationale for the ideas which have led to the improvements is presented also.

  • In this paper, a speed estimation based on the quick torque control is proposed to realize speed sensorless control in a full range of induction motors. The proposed method can be formulated simply from a motor circuit equation and conducted easily by detecting primary motor currents and a voltage command at every sampling time. Since the method need not the differential values of primary currents in an arithmetic of a speed, it can be expected to improve the precision of speed estimation in a very low speed area, especially. Some numerical simulations were conducted with the assumption of using a Pulse Width Modulation voltage source inverter.

  • In this paper, a formation guidance method for UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) to simulate the formation flight of birds proposed. The proposed method solves all issues of approaching for formation, formation keeping, and scarce chance to be collided with each UAV during formation process. Also, we design the feedforward controller to compensate the change of speed and heading for maneuvering of the leader UAV and the feedback controller to consider the response lag of the system. The stability and performance of the proposed controller is verified via numerical simulations of the full 6-Dof model of UAV.

  • A model free controller utilizing a set of linguistic fuzzy logic of the human operator's experience is developed to control the steam generator water level in a pressurized water reactor. Only 9 rules for control action are generated from the inputs of water level error and mass flow error implicitly representing the time variation of the collapsed water level. The bell type membership functions of the premise side and the result side are tuned by the sensitivity study. This compact fuzzy logic controller shows a robust control during transient and no offset error and oscillation during steady state operation. For a multi-ramp power increase from start-up to full power, the proposed controller shows good performance for the entire range.
