This paper presents the experimental examinations and statistical quantitative analysis of the correlation between the cumulative counts of acoustic emission(AE) during plastic deformation periods of the welding and the tensile strength and other properties of the tube-to-tube welded joints of O.D. 30mm (I.D 18mm) nozzle steel. This is a new approach which attempts finally to develop real-time quality monitoring system for friction welding. And this study results in practical possiblility of real-time quality control more than 100% joint efficiency showing good weld no micro structural defects.

There is an accelerating need for ocean sensing where autonomous vehicles can play a key role in assisting engineers, researcher and scientists with environmental monitoring and collecting oceanographic data. This paper is performed to develops an autonomous sailing drone to be used as a sensor carrying platform for autonomous data acquisition at Sea. From a sailing drone design viewpoint, it is important to establish reliable prediction methods for sailing drone's resistance. The required power for the propulsion unit depends on the ship resistance and speed. There are three solutions for the prediction of ship resistance as follow analytical methods, model tests in tanks and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The present paper aims at simulating sailing drone friction resistance using numerical method. The dynamic mesh motion is used to describe the sailing drone movement.
This paper presents the slip behavior of composite fabrics by high speed resin flow in high pressure resin transfer molding. In order to observe the fiber deformation behavior, we constructed the measuring equipment for friction coefficient between fiber and mold, and the monitoring system for deformation of fiber preform in high-pressure RTM process. Coulomb friction coefficient and hydrodynamic friction coefficient between fiber preform and mold were measured and the external force induced by fluid flow causing the deformation of fiber preform was measured. Friction force calculated by friction coefficient and the external force upon fiber deformation were compared, which showed that preform deformation occurred when the external force was bigger than the friction force. The slip behavior of the fiber preform was mainly influenced by the volume fraction of fiber preform and the friction coefficient.

Sapphire has a high hardness and strength and chemical stability as a superior material. It is used mainly as a material for a semiconductor as well as LED. Recently, the cover glass industry used by a sapphire is getting a lot of attention. The sapphire substrate is manufactured through ingot sawing, lapping, diamond mechanical polishing (DMP) and chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) process. DMP is an important process to ensure the surface quality of several nm for CMP process as well as to determine the final form accuracy of the substrate. In DMP process, the material removal is achieved by using the mechanical energy of the relative motion to each other in the state that the diamond slurry is disposed between the sapphire substrate and the polishing platen. The polishing platen is one of the most important factors that determine the material removal characteristics in DMP. Especially, it is known that the geometric characteristics of the polishing platen affects the material removal amount and its distribution. This paper investigated the material removal characteristics and the effects of the polishing platen groove in sapphire DMP. The experiments were preliminarily carried out to evaluate the sapphire material removal characteristics according to process parameters such as pressure, relative velocity and so on. In the experiment, the monitoring apparatus was applied to analyze process phenomena in accordance with the processing conditions. From the experimental results, the correlation was analyzed among process parameters, polishing phenomena and the material removal characteristics. The material removal equation based on phenomenological factors could be derived. And the experiment was followed to investigate the effects of platen groove on material removal characteristics.

In this paper, the torque of CNC spindle motor during machining is estimated without speed measuring sensor. The CNC spindle system is divided into two parts, the induction spindle motor part and mechanical part. In mechanical part, the variation of the frictional force due to the increment of the cutting torque and the effect of damping coefficient is investigated. Damping coefficient is found to be a function of spindle speed and not influenced by the weight of the load, while frictional force is a function of both the cutting torque and spindle speed. Experimental equations are drawn for damping coefficient and Coulomb friction as a function of spindle speed. Incremental frictional torque Is also obtained as a function of both cutting torque and spindle speed. Graphical programming is used to implement the suggested algorithm to monitor the torque of an induction motor in real time. Torque of the spindle induction motor is estimated well in about average 3% error range under various cutting conditions.
Vibration control and health monitoring of building structures have been actively investigated in recent years but treated separately according to the primary objective pursued. This paper presents a general approach in the time domain for integrating vibration control and health monitoring of a building structure to accommodate various types of control devices and on-line damage detection. The concept of the time-domain approach for integrated vibration control and health monitoring is first introduced. A parameter identification scheme is then developed to identify structural stiffness parameters and update the structural analytical model. Based on the updated analytical model, vibration control of the building using semi-active friction dampers against earthquake excitation is carried out. By assuming that the building suffers certain damage after extreme event or long service and by using the previously identified original structural parameters, a damage detection scheme is finally proposed and used for damage detection. The feasibility of the proposed approach is demonstrated through detailed numerical examples and extensive parameter studies.
The development of automatic production systems have required intelligent diagnostic and monitoring functions to overcome system failure and reduce production loss by the failure. In order to perform accurate operations of the intelligent system, implication about total system failure and fault analysis due to each mechanical component failures are required. Also solutions for repair and maintenance can be suggested from these analysis results. As an essential component of a mechanical system, a bearing system is investigated to define the failure behavior. The bearing failure is caused by lubricant system failure, metallurgical deficiency, mechanical condition(vibration, overloading, misalignment) and environmental effects. This study described slab transfer equipment fault train due to stress variation and metallurgical deficiency from lubricant failure by using FTA.
The increase in the need for a 24 hour monitoring of biological signals has been accompanied by an increasing interest in wearable systems that can register ECG at any time and place. ECG-monitoring clothing is a wearable system that records heart function continuously, but there have been difficulties in making accurate measurements due to motion artifacts. Although various factors may cause noise in measurements due to motion, the variations in the body surface and clothing during movements that cause eventual the shifting and displacement of the electrodes is particularly noteworthy. Therefore, this study used biomedical body mapping and a motion-capture system to measure and analyze the changes in the body surface and garment during movements. It was deduced that the area where the friction and separation between the garment and skin is the lowest would be the appropriate location to place the ECG electrodes. For this study, 5 male and 5 female in their 20s were selected as subjects, and through their selected body movements, the changes in the garment and skin were analyzed using the motion-capture system. As a result, the area below the chest circumference and the area below the shoulder blades were proposed as the optimal location of electrode for ECG monitoring.
In the splay manufacturing process, conveyor systems are widely used for conveying panels. In this conveyor, a large number of grounding lines are used in order to prevent a product failure due to static electricity. In many cases, the grounding line is disconnected due to the rotation of the transporting roller or curling, leading to product failure. In order to solve such a problem, there is a growing need for a system capable of detecting disconnection of a ground wire in real time. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a disconnection monitoring system of ESD (Electro-Static Discharge) ground wire caused by friction between the conveyor drive part and the panel. The proposed system is a monitoring system that can detect disconnection and disconnection of ground wire using ATmega 2560 and Wheatstone Bridge circuit. It can detect disconnection of ground wire immediately and can take measures to reduce the defect rate due to static electricity. The system proposed in this paper is expected to be applicable to the production and test equipments of all industries where the ground wire is used.
