  • IEEE 802.11 defines distributed coordination function (DCF), which is characterized by CSMA/CA and binary exponential backoff (BEB) algorithm. Most modifications on DCF so far have focused on updating of the contention window (CW) size depending on the outcome of own frame transmission without considering freezing periods experienced in the backoff interval. We propose two simple but novel schemes which effectively utilize the number of freezing periods sensed during the current backoff interval. The proposed schemes can be applied to DCF and its family, such as double increment double decrement (DIDD). Saturation throughput of the proposed schemes is analyzed by means of Bianchi's Markovian model. Computer simulation validates the accuracy of the analysis. Numerical results based on IEEE 802.11b show that up to about 20% improvement of saturation throughput can be achieved by combining the proposed scheme with conventional schemes when applied to the basic access procedure.

  • Foreground/background segmentation in video sequences is often one of the first tasks in machine vision applications, making it a critical part of the system. In this paper, we present an improved sample-based technique that provides robust background image as well as segmentation mask. The conventional multiple interval sampling (MIS) algorithm have suffer from the unbalance of computation time per frame and the rapid change of confidence factor of background pixel. To balance the computation amount, a random-based pixel update scheme is proposed and a spatial and temporal smoothing technique is adopted to increase reliability of the confidence factor. The proposed method allows the sampling queue to have more dispersed data in time and space, and provides more continuous and reliable confidence factor. Experimental results revealed that our method works well to estimate stable background image and the foreground mask.

  • Caption in video plays an important role that delivers video content. Existing caption region extraction methods are difficult to extract caption region from background because they are sensitive to noise. This paper proposes the method to extract caption region in sports video using multiple frame merge and MBR(Minimum Bounding Rectangles). As preprocessing, adaptive threshold can be extracted using contrast stretching and Othu Method. Caption frame interval is extracted by multiple frame merge and caption region is efficiently extracted by median filtering, morphological dilation, region labeling, candidate character region filtering, and MBR extraction.

  • An application of thermal response coefficient method for obtaining thermal load on stud-frame walls in a typical house is presented. A set of stud-frame walls is two-dimensional heat conduction transients with composite structure. The ambient temperature on the right-hand face of the stud-frame walls is a typical day-cycle input and the room temperature on the left-hand face is a constant input. The desired output is thermal load at the left-hand face. The time-dependent ambient temperature is approximated by a continuous, piecewise-linear function each having one hour interval. The conduction problem is spatially discretized as 8 computer modelings by finite elements to obtain thermal response coefficients. The discretization and round-off errors can be neglected in the range of adequate number of nodes. A 60-node discretization is recommended as the optimum model among 8 computer modelings. Several sets of response coefficients of the stud-frame walls are generated by which the rate of heat transfer through the walls or some temperature in the walls can be calculated for different input histories.

  • This paper presents an optimization-based method for computing a minimal bounding ellipsoid that contains the set of static responses of an uncertain braced frame. Based on a non-stochastic modeling of uncertainty, we assume that the parameters both of brace stiffnesses and external forces are uncertain but bounded. A brace member represents the sum of the stiffness of the actual brace and the contributions of some non-structural elements, and hence we assume that the axial stiffness of each brace is uncertain. By using the $\mathcal{S}$-lemma, we formulate a semidefinite programming (SDP) problem which provides an outer approximation of the minimal bounding ellipsoid. The minimum bounding ellipsoids are computed for a braced frame under several uncertain circumstances.

  • The performance of frame synchronization can be represented by the values of three characteristic variables-average misframe interval, average syncloss detection time, average reframe time. In this paper, we have analyzed the performance of frame synchronization of the standardized 90Mb/s optical transmission system by Markov chain method, with the suggestion of an extended algorithm for performance improvement. Maximum average reframe time of 1.18 ms can be obtained by the suggested algorithm, which is compared with that of 2.28 ms for the existing algorithm.

  • When welding a car frame with one spot welding there are same limitations because many parts of it cannot be simplified by one spot welding alone. It is presented two spot welding model for the description of the spot welding which is usually used in a car frame structure. This study primarily covers fatigue behavior taking spot welded SPCC(Steel plate carbon C) with different ungget intervals as a tension shear specimen. It was prepared that intervals between two nuggets are varied as 9mm, 14mm, and 20mm respectively. The tensile tests and fatigue tests were executed to know the mechanical properties under static and fatigue load condition. In addition, the relationship between fatigue life and nugget intervals was illustrated by finite element method.

  • This paper aims to explore the rhythmic phenomena of standard Korean by an experimental phonetic method. A total of 16 informants taking part in this experiment were divided into four groups : old males(OM) and old females(OF) in their fifties and young males(YM) and young females(YF) in their twenties. The informants were asked to read speech data consisting of two rhythmic units, each of which began with a stressed syllable with a long wowel. Starting with the frame / 'ma:1 'ma:nta /, the first rhythmic unit was expanded up to five syllables in all while keeping the second rhythmic unit constant with a view to investigate the pattern of increase in the interstress time interval. The results of this study are as follows: 1. There is a considerable difference between yen and old generations with respect to the duration of interstress interval . The young generation tends to speak faster than the old generation. This observation is supported by difference in the interstress intervals as exhibited by OM(389.66), OF(473), YM(275.55), YF(285.83) in the test frame '말 많다' ['ma:1 'ma:nta]. 2. Young and old generations showed a different tendency in the increase rate of duration between mono-syllables and polysyllables. In other words, the rhythm of young generation shows the tendency of syllable-timed language whereas that of old generation clearly leans towards the stressed-timed language.

  • In detection of a scene change of the moving pictures which has massive information capacity, the temporal sampling method has a faster searching speed and lower missing scene change detection than the sequential searching method for the whole moving pictures, yet employed searching algorithm and detection interval greatly affect missing frame and searching precision. In this study, the whole moving pictures were primarily retrieved threshold by the temporal difference of histogram scene change detection method. We suggested a dynamic threshold algorithm using cut detection interval and derived an equation formula to determine optimal primary retrieval threshold which can cut detection interval computation. Experimental results show that the proposed dynamic threshold algorithm using cut detection interval method works up about 30 percent in precision of performance than the sequential searching method.

  • We generate new intermediate images between observed consecutive solar images using NVIDIA's SuperSloMo that is a novel video interpolation method. This technique creates intermediate frames between two successive frames to form a coherent video sequence for both spatially and temporally. By using SuperSloMo, we create 600 images (12-second interval) using the observed 121 SDO/AIA 304 Å images (1-minute interval) of a filament eruption event on December 3, 2012. We compare the generated images with the original 12-second images. For the generated 480 images the correlation coefficient (CC), the relative error (R1), and the normalized mean square error (R2) are 0.99, 0.40, and 0.86, respectively. We construct a video made of the generated images and find a smoother erupting movement. In addition, we generate nonexistent 2.4-second interval images using the original 12-second interval images, showing slow motions in the eruption. We will discuss possible applications of this method.
