  • Despite the current technologic developments, failures in existent tensile fabric structures (TFS) subjected to wind do happen. However, design pressure coefficients are only obtained for large projects. Moreover, studies on TFSs with realistic supporting frames, comparing static and dynamic analyses and discussing the design implications, are lacking. In this study, fluid-Structure analyses of a TFS supported by masts and inclined cables, by subjecting it to different wind speeds, are carried out, to gain more understanding in the above-referred aspects. Wind-induced stresses in the fabric and axial forces in masts and cables are assessed for a hypar by using computational fluid dynamics. Comparisons are carried out versus an equivalent static analysis and also versus loadings deemed representative for design. The procedure includes the so-called form-finding, a finite element formulation for the TFS and the fluid formulation. The selected structure is deemed realistic, since the supporting frame is included and the shape and geometry of the TFS are not uncommon. It is found that by carrying out an equivalent static analysis with the determined pressure coefficients, differences of up to 24% for stresses in the fabric, 5.4% for the compressive force in the masts and 21% for the tensile force in the cables are found with respect to results of the dynamic analysis. If wind loads commonly considered for design are used, significant differences are also found, specially for the reactions at the supporting frame. The results in this study can be used as an aid by designers and researchers.

  • Process of the hydroxyapatite (HA) formation on bioactive titanium metal prepared by NaOH treatment in a modified-simulated body fluid (mSBF) containing bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated by high resolution transmission electron microscope attached with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX). The amorphous titanate, which was formed on titanium surface by NaOH treatment, combined with the calcium ions in the liquid to form an amorphous calcium titanite. With increasing of soaking time in the liquid, an amorphous calcium titanite combined with the phosphate ions to form an amorphous calcium phosphate with low Ca/P atomic ratio, and it grows as aggregates of plate (or needle)-like substance on titanium surface. The crystalline apatite layers, which are needle-shaped with the c axis parallel to the long axis, are formed in an amorphous calcium phosphate with further increase in soaking time. The formation of needle-shaped apatite layers can be explained by electrostatic effects and difference of concentration between calcium, phosphate, and albumin ions.

  • When two particles close to each other are in electrophoretic motion, each particle is under the influence of the non-uniform electric field generated by the other particle. Two particles may attract or repel each other due to the dielectric force depending on their positions in the non-uniform electric field. It is shown analytically that two adjusting rigid particles can form an aggregate due to the dielectric interaction. To verify the validity of the theoretical prediction, an experiment is carried out by using a microchannel. In the experiment, AC electric field is used to eliminate cumbersome electroosmotic flow. The experimental result shows that the particles form a chain-like structure, which is typically observed in electro-rheological fluid, due to the dielectric interaction.

  • This paper presents a dynamic manipulability analysis method of the limb moving in viscous fluid. The key idea of the presented method is that the boundary of joint velocity can be converted to the velocity-dependant dynamic manipulability polytope through the coriolis, centrifugal and drag terms in dynamic equation. The velocity-dependant dynamic manipulability polytope is added to the inertial and restoring force manipulability polytope to get overall manipulability polytope of the limb moving in the fluid Each of the torque and velocity bounds arc considered in the infinite norm sense in joint space, and the drag force of a limb moving in fluid viscous is modeled as a quadratic form An analysis example with proposed analysis scheme is presented to validate the method.

  • The present work is concerned with heat and mass transfer of an electrically conducting second grade MHD fluid past a semi-infinite stretching sheet with convective surface heat flux. The analysis accounts for thermophoresis and thermal radiation. A similarity transformations is used to reduce the governing equations into a dimensionless form. The local similarity equations are derived and solved using Nachtsheim-Swigert shooting iteration technique together with Runge-Kutta sixth order integration scheme. Results for various flow characteristics are presented through graphs and tables delineating the effect of various parameters characterizing the flow. Our analysis explores that the rate of heat transfer enhances with increasing the values of the surface convection parameter. Also the fluid velocity and temperature in the boundary layer region rise significantly for increasing the values of thermal radiation parameter.

  • An electrorheological fluid (ERF) is typically a suspension of semi-conducting solid particles dispersed in an insulating carrier fluid, and shows a dramatic change in rheological properties when an external electric field is applied. This rapid and reversible change in flow properties has potential application in many electronically controlled mechanical devices, but the development of efficient devices and optimal materials for ERF is still hindered by incomplete understanding of the fundamental physical mechanisms involved. In recent years there have been considerable advances In relating microstructural models to the rheological behaviour, and these will form the basis of this review. Results of the theoretical calculations and simulations will be compared to the key experimental evidence available. An overview of the fundamental physical concepts behind electrorheological fluid behaviour will also be presented.

  • Modified fluid critical solid fraction method was utilized as a prediction parameter to describe the shrinkage formation including the position, shape and amount of shrinkage cavities. A numerical scheme was implemented adapting this method for the evaluation of solidification defects in various casting processes. In the present numerical code, the form of shrinkage cavity can be simultaneously determined when an isolated loop is predicted to occur by the fluid critical solid fraction method. An auxiliary parameter, shrinkage potential, was also used in order to calculate the amount of residual liquid during solidification. Solidification analysis was carried out for the validation of the present scheme. It was shown that the calculated results were in good agreement with those of practical casting runs in all of the casting processes envolved in the present research. It may be concluded that the present program successfully predicts the detailed shrinkage formation behavior without the consideration of interdendritic fluid flow analysis.

  • Theoretical and numerical studies are given to the sink flows within a rotating circular tank driven by the fluid withdrawal from a bottom circular hole. It was found that, when the upper free surface was set with no-slip boundary conditions, the Ekman boundary-layer develops not only above the bottom surface but under the top surface. The sink fluid is coming from the two Ekman layers, and the mass transfer from the bulk, inviscid region is dependent on the rotational speed. It is also remarkable to see that all the fluid gathered along the axis flows in a form of rapidly rotating fluid column haying almost the same diameter as the bottom hole.

  • This paper presents a methodology to analyze the cutting fluid effectiveness in mechanical and thermal terms simultaneously using finite element method and experimental work. Cutting fluid plays many roles in metal cutting process. Mechanically-thermally coupled effectiveness of cutting fluids affect to friction coefficient at tool-workpiece interface and cutting temperature and chip control, surface finish, tool wear and form accuracy. Through this study, it can be explained that the critical behavior of cutting fluids will be able to apply optimal environmentally conscious machining process.

  • The free flexural vibration of a cantilever plate partially submerged in a fluid is investigated. The fluid is assumed to be inviscid and irrotational. The virtual mass matrix is derived by solving the boundary-value problem related to the fluid motion using elliptical coordinates. The introduction of the elliptical coordinates naturally leads to the use of the Mathieu function. Hence, the virtual mass matrix which reflects the effect of the fluid on the natural vibration characteristics is expressed in analytical form in terms of the Mathieu functions. The virtual mass matrix is then combined with the dynamic model of a thin rectangular plate obtained by using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. This combination is used to analyze the natural vibration characteristics of a partially submerged cantilever plate qualitatively. Also, the non-dimensionalized added virtual mass incremental factors for a partially submerged cantilever plate are presented to facilitate the easy estimation of natural frequencies of a partially submerged cantilever plate. The numerical results validate the proposed approach.
