Flowering time has been put forward due to the recent abnormally warm winter, which often caused damages of flower buds by late frosts persistently. In the present study, cumulative chill unit and cumulative heat unit of Niitaka pear, which are required for releasing the endogenous dormancy and for flowering after breaking dormancy, respectively, were compared between flowering time prediction models used in South K orea. Observation weather data were collected at eight locations for the recent three years from 2018-2020. The dates of full bloom were also collected to determine the confidence level of models including DVR, mDVR and CD models. It was found that mDVR model tended to have smaller values (8.4%) of the coefficient of variation (cv) of chill units than any other models. The CD model tended to have a low value of cv (17.5%) for calculation of heat unit required to reach flowering after breaking dormancy. The mDVR model had the most accurate prediction of full bloom during the study period compared with the other models. The DVR model usually had poor skills in prediction of full bloom dates. In particular, the error of the DVR model was large especially in southern coastal areas (e.g., Ulju and Sacheon) where the temperature was warm. Our results indicated that the mDVR model had relatively consistent accuracy in prediction of full bloom dates over region and years of interest. When observation data for full bloom date are compiled for an extended period, the full bloom date can be predicted with greater accuracy improving the mDVR model further.
The method of direct seeding on flooded paddy surface in rice is known to be the most labor saving cultural practice in rice. However, this method has a problem in practical use such as severe lodging occurring at the reproductive growth stage. The objectives of this study were observated degree of field lodging and variation of lodging-related characteristics with different seeding dates. The number of seedlings per m$^2$ were from 91 to 144 plants, and seedling ratios were from ranged from 61.7% to 91.8%. Days from seeding to flowering were shortened from 5 to 15 days by the later seeding dates. Heading dates of Ilpumbyeo, Seoanbyeo, Daecheongbyeo and Donjinbyeo on June 9 showed slightly elapsed on the critical stable heading time from, August 28 to 29. The culm length was effective in longer clum varieties than semidwarf varieties. The degree field lodging (degree of lodging: 0~9< 9 : complete lodging) in Obongbyeo and S101 with semidwarf varieties were 0.17, whereas 1.25 in Dongjinbyeo with long culm. The lodging resistant varieties and later seeding dates shortened the length of fibrous in the clum, and thickened fibrous in the clum, respectively. Obongbyeo and Sl0l showed stronger resistance to field lodging. The lodging resistant varieties, Obongbyeo and Sl0l, showed lower values of lodging index from 1.03 to 1.15 than those of lodging susceptible varieties, Daecheongbyeo and Palgongbyeo ranged from 1.42 to 1.70. Bending moment with leaf sheath were greater in lodging resistant varieties (Obongbyeo and Sl0l),1510.0~1930.4g.cm, than those in the lodging susceptible varieties (Daecheongbyeo and Palgongbyeo), 1127.2~1287.6g.cm.
A comparison was made the differences of growth and some yield components of two soybean ecotypes (summer and two autumn types) at different planting dates (15 April, 15 May, and 15 June) and also made the different patterns of dry matter accumulation of one summer type and two autumn types of soybeans at Agricultural Experiment Farm, College of Agriculture, Dankook University, Cheonan City, in 1987. [Planting date experiment] Days to emergence of four varieties were observed no difference. and, therefore, it was speculated that field observation of the difference of cold tolerence between varieties was difficult. Shortening rate of flowering clays as planting dates delayed was no different between two ecotypes, summer vs. autumn types of soybean. Summer types, DN82029-3 and ES18085-1, were observed not greater difference of days to maturity between early and late planting dates as compared with that of autumn types, Changyeobkong and Paldalkong. At late planting, summer types were observed more to hasten days to ripening due to high temperature in late growing season than that of autumn types. This caused to decrease somewhat greater rate of some yield componments, and finally yield as planting date delayed. As compared to autumn types, summer types, DN82029-3 and ES18085-1 showed longer stem height and lower airdry weight at late planting. [Dry matter accumulation pattern] Stem elongation after flowering of three varieties, DN82029-3, Changyeobkong and Danyeobkong, ranged 17 to 32 cm and increment of leaf area index 0.83-1.53. DN82029-3 reached 49 days faster in maximum total dry weight than that of autumn types, Changyeobkong and Danyeobkong. However. maximum total dry weight of DN82029-3 showed 50% to autumn types. At 15 May planting, summer type, day-neutrality, transfered faster into reproductive growth phase without enough growth of vegetative growth and also hastened ripening days, and thus lower dry matter accumulation and finally lower yield.

Accurate estimation of dormancy breaking and first bloom dates is crucial for effective fire blight control by disease model such as Maryblyt in apple orchards. The duration from dormancy breaking to first bloom in apple trees was influenced by daily minimum temperatures during the dormant period. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between minimum temperatures during this period and the time taken for flowering to commence. Webcam data from eight apple orchards, equipped by the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science, were observed from 2019 to 2023 to determine the dates of starting bloom (B1). Additionally, the dormancy breaking dates for these eight sites were estimated using an apple chill day model, with a value of -100.5 DD, based on collected weather data. Two regressions were performed to analyze the relationships: the first regression between the number of days under 0℃ (X1) and the time from calculated dormancy breaking to observed first bloom (Y), resulting in Y = 0.87 × X1 + 40.76 with R2 = 0.84. The second regression examined the starting date of breaking dormancy (X2) and the duration from dormancy breaking to observed first bloom (Y), resulting in Y = -1.07 × X2 + 143.62 with R2 = 0.92. These findings suggest that apple anti-chill days are significantly affected by minimum temperatures during the period from dormancy breaking to flowering, indicating their importance in fire blight control measures.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the differences of the growth and yield characteristics at different planting dates in two soybean ecotypes from 1993 to 1994. Two summer types of soybean varieties, Suwon 163 and CNS 342, and two autumn types, Hwangkumkong and Keomcheongkong #1 were planted 7 times from 22 April to 21 June with 10 days interval in 1993 and 4 times from 22 April to 21 June with 20 days interval in 1994 at experimental field, Dankook University, Cheonan. Emergence rate was shown to difference between the summer types and the autumn types, as planting date delayed and between 1993 and 1994. The average emergence period was more shortened in 1994 than 1993. This was reduced as planting date delayed. Days to flowering, pod formation and maturity were shortened as planting date delayed, and observed that shortening of days to flowering and maturity were smaller in the summer types than the autumn types. Stem height, stem diameter, number of mainstem nodes, number of branches and number of branch nodes were different between the summer types and the autumn types and between 1993 and 1994. These were reduced as planting date delayed. The number of pods per plant was also different between 1993 and 1994, and reduced as planting date delayed. The number of seeds per pod was not different between 1993 and 1994, and shown to similar tendency as planting date delayed. It was observed that one hundred seed weight of the summer types were reduced, but the autumn types were not as planted date delayed in 1993. In 1994, one hundred seed weight was not measured because almost all pods were unfilled or shriveled probably due to high temperature during pod formation period. The rate of unfilled pods per plant was higher the autumn types than in the summer type of soybeans in 1994.
Recently, Black soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) is being cultivated in paddy fields instead of rice. However, research related to the effective sowing date is insufficient in paddy fields. This study aimed to identify the sowing date for stable cultivation of black soybean by investigating its yield and seed characteristics in a paddy field. In the study, cultivation experiment with five different sowing dates (May 25, June 10, June 25, July 10, July 25) were conducted in 2019 and 2020. Days from sowing to flowering can be shortened by delaying the sowing date. In the present study, the yield of black soybean in paddy fields was the highest with June 10 as the sowing date and was calculated as 224 kg·10a-1 and 200 kg·10a-1 in 2019 and 2020, respectively. However, the highest values of seed coat cracking was 51.1±5.1% and that of total anthocyanin contents was the 3.99±0.72 mg/g, both of which were observed in 2020 for the experiment with May 25 as the sowing date. Regression analysis showed a positive correlation (R2=0.9312) between soil water contents and seed coat cracking rate during the flowering period. Hence, the soil water contents during the flowering period would have a negative effect on the seed coat development.
To layout the pattern in ecological and productive traits of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), two cultivars, Peredovic and Gunpo-local, were grown at 6 planting dates from May 15 to July 25 by 20 day intervals. Delaying of planting dates, Cv. Peredovic showed less variation in days to reach the head-visible stage than Cv. Gunpo-local. and two varieties are different in photosensitivity. Plant height and stem diameter and number of leaves of Cv. Gunpo-local were greater than those of Cv. Peredovic at the early planting, but the differences were decreased as planting were delayed. Cv. Peredovic yielded 158kg achences per 10are relatively from the May 5's planting. However delaying of planting dates after July 5, there was serious reduction in the yield.
The objective of experiment was to investigate the effects of sowing dates on forage yield and growth characteristics of rye in paddy field cultivation in midwest region of Korea. The field experiment treated with 5 levels of sowing dates was carried out at Yesan from october 1990 to june 1991. The field emergence rate and winter survival rate were decreased with delay in sowing dates by the days from sowing to emergence were took a long period of time. The crop growth rate were increased with early in sowing date. The fresh and dry weight of rye were increased with early in sowing date, but there was no significant differences between sowing date from Oct. 5 to Oct. 25. The highest fresh yield was obtained at flowering stage and the highest dry yield was obtained at milky stage. The ratio of leaf blade and leaf sheath in rye plant were decreased with earlier sowing date and delayed harvest, but the ratio of stem and inflorescence was vice versa.
A mungbean cultivar, 'Seonhwanogdu', was seeded on April 20, May 10, June 1, June 20, July 10 and July 30 in 1988, 1989 and 1990 to determine the optimum seeding date of mungbean in Cheju province. As seeding was delayed from April 20 to June 20, the number of days from emergence to first flowering (days to flowering) decreased from 56.7 to 36.7 days, on the three year average. Days to flowering of mungbean seeded on July 10 and 30 ranged 30 to 35 days except that of the plants seeded on July 10, 1988. Days to flowering linearly decreased as the average of daily mean air temperature from emergence to the first flowering increased. The number of days from the first flowering to the first maturity (days to maturity) in mungbean seeded on April 20 to July 10 ranged 14 to 21 days and was 29 to 40 days at the July 30 seeding. The number of pods per plant, the number of seeds per pod, 1000 seed weight and yield tended to increase with delaying seeding up to June 1 and June 20, and then to decrease with further delaying seeding. This study indicates that the optimum seeding time of mungbean in Cheju province is around mid-June.
Alpine plants with a scarcity of pollinators in harsh environments have been believed to undergo selfing for reproductive assurance; however, contradictory evidence is also available. Snowmelt regimes in alpine areas function to change life history characteristics of alpine plants such as flowering time and duration; yet the effects of snowmelt regimes have never been tested in alpine plants in Korea. This study was conducted to investigate the dichogamy, mating systems, and flowering characteristics of Megaleranthis saniculifolia populations [early and late snowmelt plots (ESP and LSP, respectively)] in a subalpine area of Sobaeksan Mountain in Korea. M. saniculifolia exhibited incomplete protogyny in that despite early maturation of pistils, maturation times of pistils and stamens within flowers were partly overlapped. Control and hand-outcrossing treatments produced significantly higher number of follicles and seeds per flower than autonomous and hand-selfing treatments. Based on the aggregate fruit set, the auto-fertility index (AI) and self-compatibility index (SI) were 0.33 and 0.50, respectively. Snowmelt occurred 10 days earlier in ESP than in LSP, thereby ESP and LSP showed distinct differences with regard to flower longevity and season, but showing no difference in peak flowering dates. We concluded that M. saniculifolia is an incomplete protogynous and largely outcrossing plant requiring pollinator service. Temporal variation in snowmelt time and subsequent changes in flowering characteristics under climate change may further threaten the population persistence of M. saniculifolia which has already been designated as endangered species in Korea.
