  • Hamiltonian modeling approach has been extensively adopted for rigid body dynamics whereas its usage for deforming flexible continuum dynamics has been limited. A set of Hamilton's equations for flexible body motion with finite deformation has been derived and applied for a nonlinear impact problem.

  • Dynamic behavior of flexible rectangular liquid containers is analyzed by a two-dimensional coupled boundary element-finite element method. The irrotational motion of inviscid and incompressible ideal fluid is modeled by boundary elements and the motion of structure by finite elements. A singularity free integral formulation is employed for the implementation of boundary element method. Coupling is performed by using compatibility and equilibrium conditions along the interface between the fluid and structure. The fluid-structure interaction effects are reflected into the coupled equation of motion as added fluid mass matrix and sloshing stiffness matrix. By solving the eigen-problem for the coupled equation of motion, natural frequencies and mode shapes of coupled system are obtained. The free surface sloshing motion and hydrodynamic pressure developed in a flexible rectangular container due to horizontal and vertical ground motions are computed in time domain.

Simulating flow-induced fiber motion with finite element based explicit coupling method

  • This paper presents a finite element based explicit coupling method. The derived method is proposed to solve a certain type of fluid-structure interaction problem, which is the motion of a single or flexible fiber with the motion induced by the low-Reynolds-number fluid. The particle motion is treated as a non-linear geometric dynamic problem. The Total-lagrangian finite element method is applied to describe and discretize the particle domain. The Bathe method is used to integrate the time domain. The Stokes equation is used as the governing equation of the fluid domain. The inertia term of the Stokes equation is ignored, and Reynolds number flow is assumed as zero. Since the time term is also canceled, we solve it as a quasi-static problem. Mixed finite element is to solve the fluid equation. An explicit strategy is implemented to couple the particle and the zero-Reynolds number flow. Simulations with the proposed method are presented, including the motion of single and double rigid particle immersed in the double Couette flow and the Poiseuille flow. Simulation of single flexible fiber immersed in a Poiseuille flow is also presented. Effect of particle's density, aspect ratio, and geometry are discussed.

  • A nonlinear dynamic modeling method for simply supported structures undergoing large overall motion is suggested. The modeling method employs Rayleigh-Ritz mode technique and Von Karman nonlinear strain measures. Numerical study shows that the suggested modeling method provides qualitatively different results from those of the Classical Linear Cartesian modeling method. Especially, natural frequency variations and residual deformation due to membrane strain effects are observed in the numerical results obtained by the suggested modeling method.

  • Biped locomotion is a popular research area in robotics due to the high adaptability of a walking robot in an unstructured environment. When attempting to automate the motion planning process for a biped walking robot, one of the main issues is assurance of dynamic stability of motion. This can be categorized into three general groups: body stability, body path stability, and gait stability. A zero moment point (ZMP), a point where the total forces and moments acting on the robot are zero, is usually employed as a basic component for dynamically stable motion. In this rarer, learning based neuro-fuzzy systems have been developed and applied to model ZMP trajectory of a biped walking robot. As a result, we can provide more improved insight into physical walking mechanisms.

  • A method for force-free control is proposed to realize pull-out work by an industrial articulated robot arm. This method achieves not only non-gravity and non-friction motion of an articulated robot arm according to an exerted force but also reflects no change in the structure of the servo controller. Ideal performance of a pull-out work by the force-free control method was assured by means of simulation and experimental studies with a two-degree-of-freedom articulated robot arm.

A study of measurement on range of arm joint motion of Korean male in twenties (한국인 20대 청년의 팔 관절 동작범위 측정 연구)

  • This paper measured the range of arm joint motion for Korean 54 males in twenties. The range of the arm joint motion of the subjects was measured directly using Goniometer and protractor. The number of the static and the dynamic anthropometric variables are seven and thirteen, respectively. The anthropometric data are analyzed by basic statistical analysis (four group), correlation analysis and regression analysis using commercial SAS program. The results of analysis are compared with American students anthropometric data by Laubach(1978). Thin subjects have larger movement angle as wrist flexion, wrist abduction, elbow flexion, and elbow wupination and have smaller as wrist adduction and shoulder flexion. Fat subjects have larger movement angle as shoulder flexion and are smaller wrist abduction, elbow flexion, pronation, shoulder extension, shoulder adduction, shoulder abduction, and shoulder medial rotation Korean are more flexible than American in wrist and ranges of elbow flexion and elbow rotation. The shoulder movement is similar to that of American, but shoulder flexion is less flexible.

  • This research presents a three-dimensional modeling technique for a flexible sheet. A relative coordinate formulation is used to represent the kinematics of the sheet. The three-dimensional flexible sheet is modeled by multi-rigid bodies interconnected by out-of-plane joints and plate force elements. A parent node is designated as a master body and is connected to the ground by a floating joint to cover the rigid motion of the flexible sheet in space. Since the in-plane deformation of a sheet such as a paper and a film is relatively small, compared to out-of-plane deformation, only the out-of-plane deformation is accounted for in this research. The recursive formulation has been adopted to solve the equations of motion efficiently. An example is presented to show the validity of the proposed method.

Vibrations of an axially accelerating, multiple supported flexible beam

  • In this study, the transverse vibrations of an axially moving flexible beams resting on multiple supports are investigated. The time-dependent velocity is assumed to vary harmonically about a constant mean velocity. Simple-simple, fixed-fixed, simple-simple-simple and fixed-simple-fixed boundary conditions are considered. The equation of motion becomes independent from geometry and material properties and boundary conditions, since equation is expressed in terms of dimensionless quantities. Then the equation is obtained by assuming small flexural rigidity. For this case, the fourth order spatial derivative multiplies a small parameter; the mathematical model converts to a boundary layer type of problem. Perturbation techniques (The Method of Multiple Scales and The Method of Matched Asymptotic Expansions) are applied to the equation of motion to obtain approximate analytical solutions. Outer expansion solution is obtained by using MMS (The Method of Multiple Scales) and it is observed that this solution does not satisfy the boundary conditions for moment and incline. In order to eliminate this problem, inner solutions are obtained by employing a second expansion near the both ends of the flexible beam. Then the outer and the inner expansion solutions are combined to obtain composite solution which approximately satisfying all the boundary conditions. Effects of axial speed and flexural rigidity on first and second natural frequency of system are investigated. And obtained results are compared with older studies.
