Polymers are widely applied to construction materials due to their lightweight and excellent mechanical properties. However, owing to the combustible properties, polymers are one of the biggest reason of spreading large fires in fire accidents that occur frequently in the construction industry. Therefore, as a solution to this problem, many research has been conducted to impart flame retardancy by incorporating flame retardants to polymer matrix. Among these flame retardants, organic phosphorus-containing flame retardants have been attracting much attention because they have excellent compatibility with polymer matrix and low toxicity compared with halogen or inorganic-containing flame retardants. Accordingly, this study aims to design and synthesize an alkoxyamine-based organic phosphorus flame retardant to improve flame retardancy of polylactide which is an eco-friendly polymer used for construction materials.
This study was performed to test the combustion-retardation properties of Pinus rigida-based materials by the treatment of ammonium salts. Pinus rigida plate was soaked by the treatment with three 20 wt% ammonium salt solutions consisting ammonium sulfate (AMSF), monoammonium phosphate (MAPP), and diammonium phosphate (DAPP), respectively, at the room temperature. After the drying specimen treated with chemicals, combustion properties were examined by the cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1). When the ammonium salts were used as the retardant for Pinus rigida, the flame retardancy improved due to the treated ammonium salts in the virgin Pinus rigida. However the specimen shows increasing CO over virgin Pinus rigida and It is supposed that toxicities depend on extents. Also, the specimen with ammonium sulfate showed both the lower total smoke release (TSR) and lower total smoke production (TSP) than those of virgin plate. Among the specimens, the sample treated with diammonium phosphate showed a strong inhibitory effect of combustion.

Utilizing waste materials in making useful products is a globally increasing trend. This can reduce the cost and environmental issues. In this study, oyster shell powder (OSP) is reinforced as a filler in polypropylene (PP) matrix to make a new composite. The purpose is to improve fire retardant properties of PP as a result of OSP reinforcement. Mechanical, fire retardant and water absorption properties of the new composite have been studied in this research. Concentration of OSP reinforcement in PP has been varied by wt% and its effect on the above mentioned properties has been observed. SEM (scanning electron microscopy) images of tensile and bending fractured surfaces have been taken to observe the failure mechanism during mechanical tests. An increase in the fire retardancy has been observed as a result of the OSP reinforcement while tensile strength decreased. Stiffness also increased with the addition of OSP in PP.

Used polyurethane was chemically degraded by treatments with flame retardants such as tris(3-chloropropyl) phosphate (TCPP), triethyl phosphate (TEP), and trimethyl phosphate (TMP). The structure of degraded products (DEP) was analyzed by FT-IR and P-NMR and it turned out to be phosphorus containing oligourethanes. Rigid polyurethane foam was produced by using the degraded products (DEP) as flame retardants. The flammability of recycled rigid polyurethane was investigated. The recycled polyurethane shows a reduced flammability over virgin polyurethane. In order to evaluate flame retardant properties of the recycled polyurethane foams with various amounts of DEP, the combustion parameters of the foam was measured by a cone calorimeter. Scanning electron micrograph of recycled PU shows the same uniform cell morphology as virgin PU.

In this study, we analyzed the combustion characteristics of four different floor covering materials(wood, monorium, laminatedpaper, and varnish-laminated paper) with regard to their ignitibility, thermal characteristics and flame retardancy by using an ignition temperature tester, a dual cone calorimeter, a thermogravimetric analyzer and limited oxygen index, for their fire risk assessment. According to the result, monorium had the lowest ignition temperature of $325^{\circ}C$ and the laminated paper and the varnish-laminated paper promptly ignited before 7s. Further, the wood showed the largest total heat release of $100MJ/m^2$, and the varnish-laminated paper showed the highest peak heat release rate. From the thermogravimetric analysis, it was shown that all specimens underwent rapid weight loss at $300{\sim}400^{\circ}C$. The limit oxygen indices of the laminated paper and the varnish-laminated paper were in the range of 20~21%, while it was 34% for wood. This study enabled us to confirm that wood, laminated paper and varnish-laminated paper have a relatively short ignition time and are easy to burn but they all have low heat release. In contrast, wood showed the lowest fire risk among them and had excellent flame retardancy but with high heat release.
Halogen free intumescent flame retardants(IFRS), such as the mixture of melamine phosphate(MP) and char forming agents(pentaerythritol(PER), di-pentaerythritol(DiPER), tris(2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate(THEIC)), were prepared and characterized. Polypropylene(PP)/$IFR_S$ composites were also prepared in the presence of ethylene diamine phosphate(EDAP) as a synergist and used into flame retardant PP powder coatings. Thermoplastic PP powder coatings at 20 wt% flame retardant loading were manufactured by extruded and then mechanical cryogenic crushed to bring them in fine powder form. These intumescent flame retardant powder coatings($IFRPC_S$) were applied on mild steel surface for the purpose of protection and decorative. It is a process in which a $IFRPC_S$ particles coming in contact with the preheated mild steel surface melt and form a thin coating layer. The obtained MP flame retardant was analyzed by utilizing FTIR, solid-state $^{31}P$ NMR, ICP, EA and PSA. The mechanical properties as tensile strength, melt flow index(MFI) and the thermal property as TGA/DTA and the fire safety characteristics as limiting oxygen index(LOI), UL94 test, SEM were used to investigate the effect of $IFRPC_S$. The experimental results show that the presence of $IFR_S$ considerably enhanced the fire retardant performances as evidenced by the increase of LOI values 17.3 vol% and 32.6 vol% for original PP and $IFRPC_S$-3(PP/MP-DiPER/EDAP), respectively, and a reduction in total flaming combustion time(under 15 sec) in UL94 test of $IFRPC_S$. The prepared $IFRPC_S$-3 have good comprehensive properties with fire retardancy 3.2 mm UL94 V-0 level, LOI value 32.6%, tensile strength $247.3kg/cm^2$, surface roughness Ra $0.78{\mu}m$, showing a better application prospect. Through $IFRPC_S$-2(PP/MP-PER/EDAP) and $IFRPC_S$-3 a better flame retardancy than that of the $IFRPC_S$-1(PP/MP/EDAP) was investigated which was responsible for the formed more dense and compact char layer, improved synergy effect of MP and PER/DiPER.
Purpose: To enhance the non-combustibility of fire protection piping insulation and improve the heat resistance of smoke extraction duct insulation, I plan to verify the suitability of AES insulation materials for these applications through performance testing. Method: The non-combustibility, heat resistance, and thermal insulation performance of AES insulation materials will be verified through various tests. Result: According to the 'Standards for Flame Retardancy and Fire Spread Prevention of Building Finishing Materials,' the results of non-combustibility and gas toxicity tests confirmed the non-combustible properties. The standard fire resistance tests verified the fire resistance performance. Additionally, the thermal insulation performance was confirmed through building insulation tests. Conclusion: As the performance tests on AES inorganic insulation materials have proven their noncombustibility, fire resistance, and thermal insulation performance, these materials are considered a viable alternative for improving fire spread prevention in buildings.
The combustion properties required for fire simulations of multi-layer, multi-component flame retardant cables were measured using a cone calorimeter. The CO and soot yields combustion efficiencies of the flame retardant cables were investigated. TFR-8 (flame retardant PCV and XLPE added), TFR-CVV-SB (flame retardant PCV and general PVC), and VCTF, which are excellent in the flame retardancy of cables, were considered. As the main result, the CO yield (yCO) of the TFR-8 and TFR-CVV-SB flame retardant cables increased by 23% and 16%, respectively, with increasing incident radiation heat flux from 25 kW/㎡ to 50 kW/㎡. On the other hand, the CO yield of VCTF was not influenced significantly by the changes in radiant heat flux. Finally, the soot yield and combustion efficiency increased as the sheath material (flame retardant performance) was strengthened. Therefore, in a fire environment where various heat fluxes coexist, attention should be paid to the top of the application of the combustion property of the flame retardant cable.

To prevent the flame spread in FRP vessel in fire, the engine-room of the vessel should be constructed additionally with laminated fire-retardant resin over 3 times or equivalent insulation materials to former according to the relevant standard for FRP vessel structure. It is surveyed that insulation materials called 'Gel coat' are widely used in FRP fishing vessel, however, test method and its criteria for Gel coat are not clearly establish and have not been evaluated yet, while test method and criteria for fire-retardant resin and fire-retardant polyurethane composite are described in test standard for type-approval. In this study, 3 fire-retardant resins, 4 gel coats, 1 flame-retardant paint and 1 polyurethane composite were selected based on the survey and were evaluated according to both IMO FTP Code part 5 and flame-retardant test. When comparing based on CFE values from flame-spread test, average value for 4 gel coats were lower than that of 3 fire-retardant resins. As for flame-retardant test, there were no significant differences between fire-retardant resin and gel coat, based on charred area.
A commercial cyclic diphosphonate ester (TPMP) and melamine (MA) was combined and added to polyamide 6 (PA6) to prepare the fire retardant PA6. An increase of the oxygen index to 28.6 as well as an improvement of the UL-94 classification to V-0 rating was observed. Cone measurements explained the rate of heat release (RHR) decreased and TGA showed the early decomposition and high solid residue due to co-addition of TPMP and MA, suggesting the occurrence of synergistic effect of TPMP and MA on fire resistance of PA6. The morphology of the char developed during combust ion showed the appearance of thick, intumescent cells on the surface of retardant PA6, which protects the underlying material from the action of the heat flux or flame and limits the diffusion of combustible volatile products towards the flame and oxygen.
