This paper compared the seakeeping quality of U, V type ships in infinite depth by using the finite element method. From the calculated results, it is found that heaving and pitching motions of V type are comparatively better than those of U type ship in the water of infinite depth and the reversed phenomenon occures in the water of finite depth. And the seakeeping quality of U type is better than V type ship in larger ranges than the nondimensional wave number 2.0.
Dynamic characteristics of the bell-type structure including acoustic effects and transient dynamic problems were analyzed numerically. Natural frequencies, mode shapes and transient dynamic analysis used the finite element method with 3-D general shell element. Mode shapes and stress distributions of transient dynamic analysis were expressed by computer graphics. The method using this study was evaluated by comparision of theoretical results at reference papers(14), (15) and the experimental test using Fast Fourier Transform analyzer. Vibrational modes governing acoustic characteristics of the typical bell-type structure depended on the first flexural mode(4-0 mode) and the second flexural mode(6-0 mode). Asymmetric effects by Dangiwas, acoustic holes gave rise to beat frequencies, and the Dangjwa was found to be most effective. When impact load acted on the bell, stress concentration occured at the rim part of bell. It was found that the bell type structure should be designed thickly at the rim part in order to prevent impact load from stress concentration.
An ultrasonic motor is a motor which uses vibration -a type of elastic vibration- to obtain a driving force, which then drives the motor using friction. In this paper, mode conversion type - single resonance mode ultrasonic rotary motor that use langevin type ultrasonic vibrator was studied. This model was proposed for the first time by Japanese Kumada in 1985. In this study, finite element analysis (FEA) of a stator and bidirectional driving characteristic of a rotor was newly obtained. The amplitude and phase of displacement and elliptical trajectory of beam was confirmed by FEA The fabricated motor was operated to clockwise and counterclockwise in 40.8 [kHz] and 44.2 [kHz] respectively. But bidirectional driving characteristics did not coincide each other.

This study presents finite element analysis (FEA) on a Y-type perfobond rib shear connection using Abaqus software. The performance of a shear connection is evaluated by conducting a push-out test. However, in practice, it is inefficient to verify the performance by conducting a push-out test with regard to all design variables pertaining to a shear connector. To overcome this problem, FEA is conducted on various shear connectors to accurately estimate the shear strength of the Y-type perfobond rib shear connection. Previous push-out test results for 14 typical push-out test specimens and those obtained through FEA are compared to analyze the shear behavior including consideration of the design variables. The results show that the developed finite element model successfully reflects the effects of changes in the design variables. In addition, using the developed FEA model, the shear resistance of a stubby Y-type perfobond rib shear connector is evaluated based on the concrete strength and transverse rebar size variables. Then, the existing shear resistance formula is upgraded based on the FEA results.
In this study, a new smart beam finite element is proposed for the finite element modeling of the beam-type smart structure with bonded plate-type piezoelectric sensors and actuators. Constitutive equations far the direct piezoelectric effect and converse piezoelectric effect of piezoelectric materials are considered. By using the variational principle, the equations of motion for the smart beam finite element are derived. The presented 2-node beam finite element is isoparametric element based on Timoshenko beam theory. The validity of the proposed beam element is shown through comparing the analysis results of the verification examples with those of other previous researches. Therefore, by analyzing smart structures with smart beam finite elements, it is possible to simulate the control of the structural behavior by piezoelectric actuators with applied voltages and the monitoring of the structure behavior by piezoelectric sensors with sensed voltages.
Two types of new methods with variable time steps are proposed in order to valuate binary options efficiently. Type I changes adaptively the size of the time step at each time based on the magnitude of the local error, while Type II combines two uniform meshes. The new methods are hybrid finite difference methods, namely starting the computation with a fully implicit finite difference method for a few time steps for accuracy then performing a ${\theta}$-method during the rest of computation for efficiency. Numerical experiments for standard European vanilla, binary and American options show that both Type I and II variable time step methods are much more efficient than the fully implicit method or hybrid methods with uniform time steps.

In the present research, dynamic analysis of functionally graded (FG) graphene-reinforced beams under thermal loading has been carried out based on finite element approach. The presented formulation is based on a higher order refined beam element accounting for shear deformations. The graphene-reinforced beam is exposed to transverse periodic mechanical loading. Graphene platelets have three types of dispersion within the structure including uniform-type, linear-type and nonlinear-type. Convergences and validation studies of derived results from finite element approach are also presented. This research shows that the resonance behavior of a nanocomposite beam can be controlled by the GPL content and dispersions. Therefore, it is showed that the dynamical deflections are notably influenced by GPL weight fractions, types of GPL distributions, temperature changes, elastic foundation and harmonic load excitation frequency.
In this paper, we study ruled surfaces in Minkowski space, which admit 1-type Gauss map. In particular, non-cylindrical ruled surfaces with finite type Gauss map are of k-type (k $\geq$ 2).
This paper investigates the distribution of stress and its behavior at the Root Toe in fillet welding joint. Furthermore, the stress components and principal stresses in the fillet welds are calculated by the finite element method. The distribution of stresses obtained numerically by means of the finite element method is also compared with the experimental results of two dimensional photoelasticity. A Cover plate type and Center block type of fillet welds are used as models for the numerical calculations covering the variations of 2 W/M(thickness of main plate/thickness of cover plate)=1 through 2W/M=4. The results obtained in these studies are summarized as follows; 1) When W2/M values become small, the stress concentration factors of the Root are larger than of the Toe in a C-type. Its critical value is 2W/M=3.00. However, no critical value exists in a T-type. 2) For 2W/M Values being avove 3.5 in a C-type and above 4.0 in a T-type, $K_R$ and $K_{\tau}$ become 1. 3) According to the differences of 2W/M values, the differences in stress become increasing in the Root but become decreasing in the Toe. These differences, however, disappear as the free boundary surface is approached. 4) The stress concentration factors of both the Root and Toe obtained by means of the finite element method have somewhat lower values than obtained by the photoelasiticity. But their principal stress directions coincide in either method. 5) It proves beneficial to employ the finite element method for two-dimensional plane stress analysis in front fillet welding joint.
This is a survey article on finite element a posteriori error estimates with an emphasize on gradient recovery type error estimators. As an example, the error estimator based on the ZZ patch recovery technique will be discussed in some detail.
