  • Detection of gamma ray can be available using optical fiber scintillator under radiation environment. It monitors the transfer energies of these ions by photodiodes and then convertes into currents. The module which converts those currents into voltages and processes signals is named fine current module TIA, and it is essentially important to convert currents into voltages with high linearity. We have studied and developed the TIA, improving converting linearity and minimizing noises and off-set voltages. Also, we have made efforts to develop precise and accurate current module in compliance with concerned requirements. First of all, we established developing theory, developed related circuits, and then made the current module. And, we confirmed its stability and linearity to be more excellent than any other equipment proposed by other references. We tested the developed fine current modules in the real radiation environment under authorized supervising, confirmed them to meet related requirements.

  • Time-encoded near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) system is proposed, based on a near-infrared (NIR) swept laser source, for comparison to the conventional NIRS method using a detector-type spectrometer. The cavity of the NIR swept laser source consists of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) with a gain region around 800 nm, and several fiber-optic components. To change the output wavelength in time using an applied electric radio-frequency signal, an acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) is introduced in the fiber ring cavity configuration. To demonstrate the feasibility of an NIR swept laser source for NIRS imaging, the spectroscopic comparison of two kinds of absorbance-measuring systems a detector-type spectrometer using a white light source, and a source-type spectrometer using an NIR swept laser is successfully performed with an NIR-absorbing dye.

  • The optimum conditions of second harmonic generation (SHG) can be successfully achieved experimentally using single pass and double pass methods of a pumping beam. The beam has a power of several Watts radiated by a DOFA (Diode Laser Oscillator & Fiber Amplifier) system, which is a high power CW wavelength tunable infrared laser system, in a PPLN (Periodically Poled MgO doped Lithium Niobate) nonlinear crystal. In the case of a single pass method, the parameters are the wavelength of 535 nm for SHG and the output power of 245 mW generated from the pumping input beam with wavelength of 1070 nm and the power of 2.45 W at phase matching temperature of $108.9^{\circ}C$. The conversion efficiency of SHG was 10%. In order to enhance the output of SHG, the double pass method of the SHG system of a PPLN using a concave mirror for the retroreflection and a pair of wedged flat windows for phase compensation was also presented. In this double pass system, we obtained the SHG output beam with the wavelength of 535 nm and the maximum power of 383 mW at optimum phase matching temperature of $108.5^{\circ}C$ by using an incident pumping beam with wavelength of 1070 nm and the power of 2.45 W. The maximum conversion efficiency is 15.6%, which is more than that of the single pass method.

  • Over the past two decades, fiber-based lasers have made remarkable progress, now having reached power levels exceeding kilowatts and drawing a huge amount of attention from academy and industry as a replacement technology for bulk lasers. In this paper we review the significant factors that have led to the progress of fiber lasers, such as gain-fiber regimes based on ytterbium-doped silica, optical pumping schemes through the combination of laser diodes and double-clad fiber geometries, and tandem schemes for minimizing quantum defects. Furthermore, we discuss various power-limitation issues that are expected to incur with respect to the ultimate power scaling of fiber lasers, such as efficiency degradation, thermal hazard, and system-instability growth in fiber lasers, and various relevant methods to alleviate the aforementioned issues. This discussion includes fiber nonlinear effects, fiber damage, and modal-instability issues, which become more significant as the power level is scaled up. In addition, we also review beam-combining techniques, which are currently receiving a lot of attention as an alternative solution to the power-scaling limitation of high-power fiber lasers. In particular, we focus more on the discussion of the schematics of a spectral beam-combining system and their individual requirements. Finally, we discuss prospects for the future development of fiber laser technologies, for them to leap forward from where they are now, and to continue to advance in terms of their power scalability.

  • Post-dispersion compensation methods for the 3000 km long-haul transmission distance using 10 Gbps 40 wavelength division multiplexing channels were analyzed and compared. First, each channel was compensated by an individual dispersion value, next each group of eight channels by an individual value, and lastly all forty channels by a single value. Considering the lower and highest performance channels and their values, the post-dispersion compensation method by each channel group showed the possibility to simplify the transmission system without sacrifice of signal performance.

  • This paper describes the design of monolithic optical transceiver circuitry being used as a part of the fiber optic modules. It has been designed in 0.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ 2-poly 3 metal silicon CMOS analog technology and operates at 155.52 Mbps(STM-1) data rates. It drives laser diode to transmit intensity modulated optical signal according to 155.52 Mbps electrical data from system. Also, it receives 155.52 Mbps optical data that transmitted from other systems and converts it to electrical data using photo diode and amplifier. To avoid noise and interference between transmitter and receiver on one chip, layout techniques such as special placement, power supply separation, guard ring, and protection wall were used in the design. The die area is 4 ${\times}$ 4 $\textrm{mm}^2$ and the estimated power dissipation is less than 900 ㎽ with a single 5 V supply.

  • In this study, we demonstrated Fourier-domain/swept-source optical coherence tomography (FD/SS-OCT) at a center wavelength of 800 nm for in vivo human retinal imaging. A wavelength-swept source was constructed with a semiconductor optical amplifier, a fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter, isolators, and a fiber coupler in a ring cavity. Our swept source produced a laser output with a tuning range of 42 nm (779 to 821 nm) and an average power of 3.9 mW. The wavelength-swept speed in this configuration with bidirectionality is 2,000 axial scans per second. In addition, we suggested a modified zero-crossing method to achieve equal sample spacing in the wavenumber (k) domain and to increase the image depth range. FD/SS-OCT has a sensitivity of ~89.7 dB and an axial resolution of 10.4 ${\mu}m$ in air. When a retinal image with 2,000 A-lines/frame is obtained, an acquisition speed of 2.0 fps is achieved.

  • Signal performances according link span dispersion compensation conditions at the 2000 km long-haul transmission distance using 10 Gbps 40 wavelength division multiplexing channels were analyzed and compared. 95%, 97.5%, 100%, 102.5% and 105% compensation conditions were applied and 97.5% gave the best performance without post dispersion compensation. the effects of accumulated dispersion value and average dispersion value per transmission link for each link compensation condition were analyzed. When post dispersion compensation optimization was applied to five link span dispersion compensation conditions, 102.5% was given the best performance.

  • The cable TV network has delivered downward broadcasting signals from distribution centers to subscribers. Since the traditional coaxial cable has been upgraded by the Hybrid Fiber Coaxial(HFC) cable, the upward channels has expanded broadband services such as Internet. This upward channel is vulnerable to ingress noises. When the noises from the children nodes accumulated in an amplifier exceeds a certain level, that node has to be cut off to prevent the noise propagation. The node selection problem(NSP) is defined to select nodes so that the noise in each node does not exceed the given threshold value and the sum of Profits of selected nodes can be maximized. The NSP has shown to be NP-hard. In this paper, we have proposed heuristics to find the near-optimal solution for NSP. The experimental results show that interval partitioning is better than greedy approach. Our heuristics can be used by the HFC network management system to provide privileged services to the premium subscribers on HFC networks.
