  • The purpose of this study was to assess the degree of stress and patterns of coping for that Stressful events on family members because of the hospitalization of the patients. Stress and coping were measured with a tool on the basis of Volicer and Bell's questionnaire. In data collection, the modified 38 items of Volicer's stress scale and Bell's 18 item coping scale were administered. The subjects consisted of 259 family members of general ward-patients in Seoul National University Hospital during April in 1990. They were randomly selected on the basis of relationship of patients; patient's spouse, patient's daughters or sons. The stressors of the family members were ranked as follows; The first rank Stressful events was related to the patient's diseases and pain, the second ones was related ·to caring of their patients and family's psychosocial life. Families used long term coping method significantly more than short term ones. The results indicated that there was no difference in use of coping method between pre and post hospitalization. Finding out more about situation and optimism were the most common coping methods, and the least frequent coping method was the use of drugs. In conclusion, the identification of perceived stress and coping patterns of family members provides useful information for family nursing and aimes at better nursing care for the hospitalized in patients.

  • Congenital heart disease is now estimated to be the most prevalent chronic illness in children. The overall purpose of study is to enhance our understanding of mother's perception of family stress, perceived social support, and coping who has a child newly diagnosed with congenital heart disease. In this investigation, the relationship between family stress, perceived social support, and coping within the context of a acute, non life- threatening chronic illness in the situation of newly diagnosed as Rolland's typology of chronic illness. The study employed data from a subset of a large longitudinal study, children's chronic illness: parents and family adaptation conducted by M. McCubbin (5 R29 NR02563) which was funded by the NIH. The subject for this study were 92 mothers who have a child under age 12 who was newly diagnosed with congenital heart disease within the last 3-4 months. Results form correlational and regression analysis revealed that perceived social support operated as a resiliency factor between family stress and coping of mothers. Child and family characteristics appeared to be important predictors of perceived social support and mother's coping. Therefore, the findings provide an incremental contribution to the explanation of effects for perceived social support and may challenge resiliency model in previous literature. Further, these findings suggest that perceived social support and coping are both influencing in the resiliency of relatively high risk groups of families who has a child with congenital heart disease.

  • The purpose of this study is to show farm women's stress under productive activity role multiple overload through family characteristic (pattern and number) and characteristic(type working time and involvement proportion) of productive activity. The outline of the study is as follow; 1. Stress by pattern and number of a family is highest in a four generation family and increases according as the number of the family increases. 2. The characteristic of productive activity : 1) Stress based on type of productive activity is highest in Type III of the most multiple overload roles. 2) in light of stress based working time area of household task activity is in inverse proportion to working time but area of farming and wage earning activity are approximately in direct proportion to it. The two-way ANOVA analysis show that stress in Type I of area of household task increases but in Type IV it decreases as working time increases 3) In stress based on involvement proportion to it. The wo-way ANOVA analysis show that stress in Type I of area of household task increases but in Type IV it decreases as working time increases. 3) In stress based on involvement proportion in three as working time increases 3). In stress based on involvement proportion in three activity areas the more the involvement proportion the less of the stress : an inverse ratio.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to determine the predictors of postpartum depression. Method: One hundred-sixty one women within one year after delivery from one public health center located in the northern area of Seoul were used in this study. The instruments were a survey of general characteristics, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, recent life events index, perceived social support from family, Quality of marriage index, parenting stress index, and Rosenberg's self-esteem inventory. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, and logistic regression. Result: The average item score of the EPDS was 6.67. 12.4% of respondents, who scored above a threshold 12, were likely to be suffering from a depression of varying severity. The fitness of the model for explaining postpartum depression from six variables, plan for pregnancy, family support, quality of marital relation, perceived social support, life events, childcare stress, and self-esteem, was statistically significant and the predictive power of these variables was 90.9%. The significant predictors of postpartum depression were family support and child care stress. Conclusion: Further research is needed to identify the prevalence rate of postpartum depression using more reliable sampling methods from a large general population. Nursing interventions need to be developed for promoting family support and reducing childcare stress.

It also interferes with the normal process of family development. Futhermore, dysfunctional family will have effects on morale of the servicemen in military. This is a descriptive study. The main purpose of this study is to compare the level and types of stress between a group of military wives and a group of civilian wives and provide a data which can be used to develop a stress management program. Sample consist with 250 military wives and 250 civilian wives residing in metro Seoul area. Data collection was done during October 4, 1994-November 30, 1994. Stress was measured with the instrument developed by the researcher. The cronbach's ${\alpha}$ score of the instrument was .91. The data was analyzed by using SPSS-PC. The results of this study are : 1. The stress score was 47.09 for military wives, 36.56 for civilian wives. The range of score was 0-192. The stress level of military wives was greater than civilian wives. (t=4.80, P<.000) 2. The rank order of stressors of military wives were 1) move 2) residential environment 3) purchase of house 4) holidays. The rank order of stressors of civilian wives were 1) husband late return after work 2) arguments with husband 3) holidays 4) husband's drinking problem. The result shows that the main stressors of military wives are frequent moves, residential environment, uncertainty of the future, unsafe work environment of husband, and the lack of private life which are all associated with the military. Therefore, it is urgently needed to distribute this facts through military journal to understand the characteristic of the stress of military wives, and to develope appropriate health care program to lessen the stress.

  • Posttranscriptional regulation of RNA metabolism, including RNA processing, intron splicing, editing, RNA export, and decay, is increasingly regarded as an essential step for fine-tuning the regulation of gene expression in eukaryotes. RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) are central regulatory factors controlling posttranscriptional RNA metabolism during plant growth, development, and stress responses. Although functional roles of diverse RBPs in living organisms have been determined during the last decades, our understanding of the functional roles of RBPs in plants is lagging far behind our understanding of those in other organisms, including animals, bacteria, and viruses. However, recent functional analysis of multiple RBP family members involved in plant RNA metabolism and elucidation of the mechanistic roles of RBPs shed light on the cellular roles of diverse RBPs in growth, development, and stress responses of plants. In this review, we will discuss recent studies demonstrating the emerging roles of multiple RBP family members that play essential roles in RNA metabolism during plant growth, development, and stress responses.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate life stress, social support, and antepartum depression among Southeast Asian immigrant women married to Korean men. Methods: Ninety-three subjects were recruited from local women's clinics and multicultural family support centers in D City. The instruments used were the life stress scale, social support scale, and K-EPDS. All the instruments were translated into their corresponding mother languages (Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Philippine) and notarized. Results: The item mean scores of life stress and social support were 2.65 and 3.17, respectively, on a 5-point Likert scale. The mean score of antepartum depression was 10.16, indicating that they were generally in a depressive state. A positive correlation was observed between life stress and antepartum depression (r=.59, p<.001). Social support was negatively correlated with life stress (r=-.42, p<.001) and antepartum depression (r=-.39, p<.001). The best predictors for antepartum depression were life stress, marital satisfaction, and emotional support, and they explained 43% of the variance. Conclusion: Antepartum depression in Southeast Asian immigrant brides was significantly associated with life stress as well as lack of emotional support. Emotional support may reduce their life stress and antepartum depression.
