For this study, a questionnaire was administered to 117 non-delinquent juveniles living with their parents as high school students and 98 delinquent juveniles aged 15~18 who live in detention centers for adolescence. The data was analyzed using t-test, cross-tab, correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis with SPSS /PC window program. Based on these results, the following conclusions were drawn. First, it was found that non-delinquent juveniles show a more open communication style with their parents than delinquent juveniles. Furthermore, a high level of parent-child communication was associated with high self-esteem in adolescents. Second, although physical environment such as family type or economic status influences an adolescents' self-esteem, the degree of positive parent-child communication style has a much greater effect on an adolescents' self-esteem. Finally, in terms of the effects of family environmental variables and parent-child communication style on self-esteem, parent-child communication style has a stronger effect on delinquent juveniles than non-delinquent juveniles. These results shows the importance of communication style between parent and child, especially for families with delinquent juveniles.

Barnes and spiritual wellbing Scale by Palautzian and Ellison Folkman. Data collection were form March to April, 2003. To get the descriptive statistics, SPSS Program, Pearson Correlation Coefficients and stepwise multiple regression were used for analyzing data. The results were as following: 1. Represents the degree of family functioning, communication and spiritual wellbeing, on subjects. Means scores of this study are following: spiritual wellbeing 67.92, lower level of cohesive(5.19) and adaptive(3.93), communication 58.14, lower level of open(5.15) and closed(4.71) and family functioning 95.58, lower level of religious(7.70) and existential(7.63). All each lower level of family functioning, communication and spiritual wellbeing, on subjects were derived significantly different(p.05). There were significant correlation among the variables of subjects. The cohesive family functioning score was significant related to the adapted(r=.588). Especially, the closed communication score showed inverse correlations open family functioning(r=-.424) and open communication score(r=-.680). The existential spiritual wellbeing score also was significant related to the cohesive(p<.001) and adaptive(p<.05) family functioning, open communication(p<.05). Especially, the closed communication score showed inverse correlations existential spiritual wellbeing (r=-.202). The existential spiritual wellbeing score also was significant related to the religious(r=.815, p<.001). • The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of family mealtime and family functioning (family cohesion, family adaptability, and communication with father and mother) on early adolescent school adaptation. Data of 3,145 middle school students from the Survey on the Family Values and Lives among Adolescents(2010) conducted by National Youth Policy Institute(NYPI) were used. The findings are as follows. First, there were significant differences in the frequency of having breakfast and dinner with father and having breakfast with mother, family cohesion, and communication with father according to gender. Second, hierarchical linear regression analyses revealed that household economic status, mother's employment status and adolescents' gender among demographic characteristics, having breakfast with father and having dinner with mother in family mealtime frequency, and all the variables of family functioning predicted adolescents' school adaptation. Finally, economic status, having dinner with mother, family cohesion, and communication with father and mother were associated with adolescents' school adaptation for both boys and girls. Mother's education and having breakfast with father were found to be significant for only boys, while mother's employment status and family adaptability were found to be significant for only girls. These findings could provide grounds for making family and education policy.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of anxiety in mediating the influence of family of origin characteristics on subsequent relationship processes. Using Bowenian theory as a foundation, this study examined the causal relationships among gender, religion, family of origin-fusion, intimacy, intimidation, personal-trait-anxiety, couple open communication and relationship satisfaction. Results of the path analysis indicated that: (a) gender, religion, family of origin-fusion, and family of origin-intimidation were directly related to personal-trait-anxiety, (b) personal-trait-anxiety was directly related to couple open communication and not related to relationship satisfaction, (c) couple open communication was directly related to relationship satisfaction, and (d) family of origin factors were not directly related to couple open communication and relationship satisfaction; rather, as it was expected, indirect associations, through the mediation of anxiety, were found. The results generally support Bowen's intergenerational process theory, which asserts that anxiety is the mediator of the process. Limitations of the current study and suggestions for further research were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the relation between juvenile deliquency and parent-adolescent communication, the family cohesion and adaptability as variables of psychological environment of the family. The subjects were 143 juvenile deliquents in jail, aged 16 to 19, and 347 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th grade students who resided in low income areas in Seoul and Taegu. The research data were collected by structured questionnaire. 143 juvenile delinquents and 87 students whose degree of deliquency was more than M+(0.5*S.D) were selected as the final data source. The statistical methods were frequency percentile, pearson's correlation, one-way ANOVA. Scheffe'test and multiple regression analysis. The major findings showed that (1) juvenile deliquency was significantly related to father-closed communication type. (2) juvenile deliquency was significantly related to low family cohesion and adaptability, (3) the family cohesion and adaptability was positively correlated with parent-adolescent communication. Father-adolescent communication had more important effect upon the family cohesion and adaptability than mother-adolescent communication.

  • In order to develop a model for better understanding of causal relationships in resiliency factors in families of children with disabilities, 200 families participated in this adaptation of the Resiliency Model of McCubbin and McCubbin(1993). The 6 latent variables included in the hypothesized model were family stress, family hardiness, family schema, community support, family problem-solving communication, and family adaptation. The models were developed on the basis of confirmatory factor analysis and compared using covariance structure modeling (LISREL). Adequate fitness of the model was observed. Family stress showed negative effect on family schema and on family hardiness. Family schema showed positive effect on community support and on family hardiness. Family hardiness showed positive effect on family problem-solving communication, and family problem-solving communication showed positive effect on family adaptation.
