  • FACES II & III did not capture high extremes of Cohesion and Adaptability dimension, and were linear rather than curvilinear measure. The purpose of this study was to examine reliability and validity of revised FACES using by FACES II,III,IV. Factor analysis showed that Cohesion and Adaptability dimension consisted each 3 factors(disengaged, connected, enmeshed / rigid, flexible, chaotic). Extremes on each dimension conceptually were opposite and they were uncorrelated with each other. Revised FACES effectively predicted family function. Reliability coefficients of subscales ranged form .68~.82. Revised FACES had good internal consistency, and construct and criterion related validity.

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study were to test the validity and reliability of FACES III when applied to the only one and two family members, and to use more appropriately in the nursing practice. Method: Data were collected from 105 college students and 105 of their parents in two local nursing colleges. The original questionnaire, which was originally developed by Olson(1989), was modified by based on literature review and analyzed by correlation coefficient, Cronbach's α, Guttmans split coefficients and factor analysis. Result: Cronbach's αof the adaptability and cohesion were .77, .73(Guttmans split coefficient were .76, .71) when applied to the only one family member, and were .81, .77 (Guttmans split coefficient were .81, .77) when applied to two. The Pearson's correlation coefficient of the adaptability and cohesion between two family members were .38, .35. The total-item correlations of the other items except for items 5, 7, 13 were significant. The correlation coefficients between adaptability and cohesion when applied to only one and two were .30, .38(p < .01). When the data was analyzed by principle component analysis and Varimax rotation with the number of factors fixed to two, two factors explained 37.2% of total variance in the case of one member, and 42.2% of total variance in two. Conclusion: These results suggested that the concept and the construction validity of cohesion needed to be more clarified. Also It is required that the reliability and validity of FACES III should be tested in two more family members.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of family cohesion and self-care agency on the quality of life in community-dwelling elderly. Using a descriptive survey design, data were collected during September 2-20, 2016 by distributing questionnaires to and retrieving them from 197 elderly participants aged 65 years or older in two senior welfare centers located in "B" metropolitan city. Results showed that family cohesion of community-dwelling elderly was significantly positively correlated with their self-care agency (r=.434, p<.001) and quality of life (r=.544, p<.001), while self-care agency was significantly positively correlated with quality of life (r=.571, p<.001). The factors that had the biggest effect on the quality of life in community-dwelling elderly were identified in the order of self-care agency (${\beta}=0.413$, p<.001) and family cohesiveness (${\beta}=0.365$, p<.001). These variables were found to have an explanatory power of 42.8% for quality of life (F=74.31, p<.001). Therefore, a strategy to improve self-care agency and family cohesion may be helpful in improving the quality of life in community-dwelling elderly.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the degree of internet addiction and factors affecting internet addiction in elementary school students. Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was employed in this study. The subjects were 378 students who were recruited from 5th and 6th grade in five elementary schools in J city, Korea. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using the SPSS Win 10.1 program. Results: Of the children, 51.9% reported being average online users, 45.5%, heavy online users, and 2.6%, internet addicted. The level of internet addiction of subjects correlated significantly with the behavioral activation system, behavioral inhibition system, family cohesion, and learned self-concept, but not family adaptability. Significant predictors influencing internet addiction were the behavioral activation system, learned self-concept, and family cohesion. These predictors accounted for 22% of variance in internet addiction. Conclusion: This study found that the behavioral activation system in personality aspects, family cohesion in the family system, and learned self-concept are primary factors that explain internet addiction among elementary students. We suggest these results be used to develop an online addiction prevention or treatment program.

  • The relations between family functioning (cohesion, conflicts, family sociability, and democratic family style) and self-esteem and loneliness in adolescents were examined in a sample of 485 2nd-grade high school students (256 boys and 229 girls). Data were collected using three questionnaires on the loneliness, family functioning, and self-esteem of adolescents. Family functioning and self-esteem were significantly related to loneliness both in adolescent boys and girls. Adolescents experienced less loneliness when family cohesion and sociability were higher, conflicts were lower, the family style was more democratic, and self-esteem was higher. Family functioning was also related to self-esteem. The more functional the family, the higher the self-esteem of adolescents. Self-esteem played a partly mediating role in the relation between family functioning and loneliness only for boys. This emphasizes the influential role of self-esteem on loneliness.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the relative influence of OCM and BSM's family functioning dimensions and develop a new family system model related to adolescent adjustment. The 443 subjects were selected randomly from the second grade of middle and high schools in the city of Taegu. The survey instruments were FACESⅢ, SFI-Ⅱ, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Depression Scale, Self-Esteem Scale, and Delinquency Scale, Factor Analysis, Cronbach's α, Multiple Regression, MANOVA, Scheffe test were conducted for the data analysis. The major findings of this study were as follows: First, OCM's and BSM's family functioning dimensions respectively had different relative influence that affected adolescent adjustment level. In anxiety and depression. BSM's family health/competence dimension had superior influence to any other family functioning dimensions and in self-esteem and delinquency, OCM's cohesion dimension was superior to any other family functions. Second, family system classification method by a new family system model using family cohesion(OCM's relationship dimension) and family health/competence(BSM's change dimension) was more useful than OCM in evaluating adolescent adjustment.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relations between family functioning and the interpersonal relation disposition of high school students in southern Gyeonggi province. The subjects of this study were 360 high school students. The scale of family functioning was measured using the Family Adaptability Cohesion Evaluation Scale(FACES Ⅲ) developed by Olson, et al.(1985). To measure the interpersonal relation disposition, Ahn's Interpersonal Relation Disposition Scale(IRDS) was used. The data was analyzed by using t-test, ANOVA, and multiple comparison(Duncan test). The major findings were as follows: There were significant differences in student's family functioning and interpersonal relation disposition according to school department and family economy level. There were significant differences in the interpersonal relation disposition according to gender. Where family functioning was higher, the students' interpersonal relation dispositions were more sympathetic, accepting and socially friendly, while being less rebellious and distrustful. As a result of this study, it is found that family functioning has effects on high school students' interpersonal relation disposition.
